Supply chain competition between China and the United States is set to intensify over the next five years, with eight developing countries – including four in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) – poised to benefit from the relocation of manufacturing from China, according to a recent study.
China's economic data sent mixed signals in May, with US tariffs continuing to weigh on the country's manufacturing and exports but domestic consumption picking up slightly in the run-up to a major online shopping festival.

China ready to fight fentanyl, illegal immigration with US, top police chief says
China has expressed willingness to work with the United States on anti-drug efforts and the repatriation of illegal immigrants – two priorities for US President Donald Trump – but urged 'mutual respect' from Washington. The remarks were made in a meeting between Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong and US ambassador to China David Perdue in Beijing on Thursday. Wang said Beijing was willing to work with Washington and hoped the US could ' meet China halfway , uphold an attitude of equality, respect each other's concerns, and contribute positive energy to the development of bilateral relations', according to state news agency Xinhua. 'We stand ready to engage in practical collaboration with the US in law enforcement areas such as counter-narcotics and the repatriation of illegal immigrants , striving to achieve outcomes that benefit the people of both countries,' Wang was quoted as saying. According to Xinhua, Perdue said he was willing to serve as a communicator and promoter of US-China relations and to advance exchanges and cooperation in areas such as drug control law enforcement. Last year, Beijing and Washington held several meetings to discuss closer cooperation, and law enforcement agencies on both sides have set up anti-drug hotlines to share information.

Pop Mart's shares get a beating as People's Daily weighs in to rail against ‘blind boxes'
The world's most valuable toymaker is losing some of its appeal after the mouthpiece newspaper of the Communist Party of China poured cold water on its business model and warned against the addictiveness of its wildly popular collectibles. Pop Mart International Group 's shares plunged as much as 6.6 per cent on Friday in Hong Kong after the People's Daily newspaper ran a commentary that railed against the 'wilful consumerism' of so-called blind boxes. The stock has fallen 11 per cent in two days, wiping out HK$36 billion (US$4.58 billion) in market value. The mainstay of Pop Mart's business model is its blind boxes and blind cards, which hide their contents with sealed packaging. That drives collectors into frequent and repeat purchases to get their hands on the rarest and most desired toys or cards, where the chance of finding rare editions has been calculated at less than 2 per cent. These products are 'business traps' designed to use unpredictable rewards to encourage repeat purchases, the People's Daily said, citing legal experts and academics. Minors are especially susceptible given their still-developing self-control and psychological maturity, the newspaper warned, calling for stronger regulations to protect them against these tactics. Chinese authorities issued a directive in 2023 banning the sale of blind boxes to children under eight years old to curb their addiction.

Hong Kong shoebox home landlords may pass on costs to tenants under new rules: experts
Operators of shoebox homes in Hong Kong could pass on extra costs of meeting the government's proposed minimum standards to tenants, with some considering whether to leave the market, as authorities press ahead with a regulatory regime overseeing the city's notorious subdivided flats. Hayson Chan Hin-hay, chairman of the Hong Kong Basic Housing Units Operators Association, told a radio programme on Friday that certification costs alone for a flat subdivided into four units could be as high as HK$50,000 (US$6,340). The planned legislation, which was gazetted on the same day, marks an important step in creating a much-awaited legal regime to eliminate substandard subdivided flats, with enforcement scheduled for 2027. Under the authorities' plan, subdivided flats must fulfil a set of standards laid down for 'basic housing units', which include a minimum size of 86 sq ft, a ceiling height of 2.3 metres (7.5 feet), proper windows and at least one toilet for each unit. Landlords will be allowed to register their subdivided flats if they comply with official standards and remain on the rental market if they receive accreditation. The government will charge landlords a registration fee of HK$745, as well as a HK$3,000 accreditation fee per subdivided unit. But authorities will also introduce various fee waivers to discourage them from rectifying their properties at the last minute.
