‘Pee-wee as Himself' is a bittersweet look at the price of fame

Former Groundlings Laraine Newman (of 'Saturday Night Live' fame) and Cassandra Peterson (a.k.a. 'Elvira, Mistress of the Dark') appear as talking heads here. The late Phil Hartman, alum of both 'SNL' and The Groundlings, is seen in archival clips. Hartman, along with Reubens and Michael Varhol, wrote the 1985 box office hit, 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure,' the movie that put both Pee-wee and its novice director, Tim Burton, on the map.
Additionally, Laurence Fishburne and S. Epatha Merkerson appear to remind us they were on '

With documentaries like this one, I've often wondered how much control, if any, was ceded by the filmmakers in exchange for access. Especially when the subject is credited as an executive producer, as the late Reubens is here. Wolf pulls back the curtain by providing clips of Reubens talking about how upset he is at not being in control of the footage. There's even a scene at the beginning of the second episode where Reubens FaceTimes Wolf to ask if he can submit questions for the other interviewees.

'You know the answer to that question is no,' says a stunned Wolf after a brief pause. We're privy to Wolf's relieved response when Reubens reveals that he's pranking him.
'Do you trust me?' Wolf is heard asking at another point. Reubens responds that he never will, though he admits there might be a little bit of trust between them. It's occasionally hard to ascertain how serious Reubens is in his responses; even without his trademark makeup, the familiar, mischievous Pee-wee smirk appears in those moments.

The title is also bittersweet. As the first, and more interesting, episode reveals, Paul Reubens was always himself until he tasted enormous success. Those of us old enough to have seen 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' in theaters, or watched the five seasons of the CBS hit 'Pee-wee's Playhouse,' remember the darker elements that populate the second episode.

But despite watching '
'I was as out as you can be,' he tells us, 'and then I went back in the closet. Because I could pass.'
Being identified as gay was always potentially career-ending, which is why so many Hollywood stars, like Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter, stayed closeted at the height of their fame. Reubens's situation is the opposite, and much of 'Pee-wee as Himself' implicitly deals with the psychological repercussions of going into the closet after tasting the freedom of avoiding it for so long.

Still, there was plenty of gay subtext on 'Pee-wee's Playhouse' (and some of the clips here highlight how sneaky the show could be). But not enough to negate plausible deniability. And when folks expressed concern about the believability of Pee-wee's relationship with his girlfriend in 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure,' Reubens counter-attacked by staging that ridiculously long kiss between him and Valeria Golino in the box office flop, 'Big-Top Pee-wee.'
In a way, the success of Pee-wee Herman was a reward for Reubens hiding his true self. I found this idea to be so profoundly sad that the overall documentary left me somewhat depressed. I can imagine how painful it would be if I had to go back into the closet, so my reaction is strictly personal.

The saddest part of 'Pee-wee as Himself' is that Reubens's death from the cancer he privately battled for six years prohibited him from appearing on camera to speak about his most devastating scandal. Not the 1991
Overall, 'Pee-wee as Himself' is a worthwhile documentary for fans of Pee-wee Herman and for folks who want to know more. But even at its most entertaining, it can be an emotionally difficult viewing experience.

2025's biggest and most surprising movie hit is coming to Max soon, so you can shout 'Chicken Jockey!' at the screen as many times as you like

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A Minecraft Movie will be available to stream on Max very soon Warner Bros. has confirmed it'll arrive on June 20 The biggest film of 2025 has almost reached the $1 billion mark globally Get ready to shout "chicken jockey!" at your screens, everyone, because A Minecraft Movie has finally dug up a streaming release date. Well, that is in countries where Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) super streamer Max, i.e., one of the world's best streaming services, is available. The Jason Momoa and Jack Black-starring film will launch on the service this Friday (June 20), so you don't have long to wait to check out one of the highest-grossing new movies of the year at home in nations including the US, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Viewers in places where Max isn't available, such as the UK, Canada, and India, can still watch Minecraft's movie adaptation at home. However, you'll have to rent or buy it from Amazon, Apple TV, the Microsoft Store, and other online stores. Hopefully, it won't be long until deals are struck with Max's distribution partners in these nations, so that viewers can watch on services like Sky, Crave, and JioHotstar. Debuting in theaters on March 4, A Minecraft Movie stars Momoa, Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastien Hansen as five humans transported to the Overworld, aka Minecraft's cube-based dimension where the only limit to creativity is your imagination. There, they must help to defeat the nefarious Malgosha, who wants to rule the Overworld using a magical artifact known as the Orb of Dominance. Not many people expected A Minecraft Movie to be such a huge hit. Despite the enduring popularity of Mojang's hugely successful video-game namesake, I was one of those who expected its film reimagining to fall flat on its face. And my belief didn't waver after watching it – indeed, as part of my A Minecraft Movie review, I said it wasn't the wildly creative blockbuster video-game film adaptation I was hoping for. I'm not afraid to admit that I underestimated how wildly successful it would be, though. Per BoxOfficeMojo, A Minecraft Movie has raked in over $951.51 million worldwide since it debuted in theaters. That makes it the biggest money-spinner of the year in the western world (China's animated fantasy flick Ne Zha 2 has reportedly made an eye-popping $1.89 billion, with $1.82 billion made domestically in that nation). Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake could surpass A Minecraft Movie before the former's theatrical run ends – at the time of writing, Lilo & Stitch has amassed $858.3 million globally. However, thanks to its game namesake's worldwide fanbase and those viral TikTok videos of chaotic A Minecraft Movie screenings, Warner Bros' film remake may yet hold onto its box office crown – at least until Superman and/or The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrive and potentially earn more money. Ryan Gosling Fan-Favorite Movie ‘The Nice Guys' Gets Long-Awaited Sequel Update

While Hollywood has leaned more heavily on movie remakes over recent years, fans seem to have an increased interest in another approach: sequels. Fortunately, many are getting their wish, with a few popular older movies getting sequels or spinoffs of late, including the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2 as a prime example. The latest film to address the idea of a potential sequel originally premiered in 2016, so the buzz hasn't been quite as loud lately, but it's apparent fans still want it. The Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe detective mystery, The Nice Guys, earned rave reviews and director Shane Black addressed the possibility recently. As /Film revealed, Black's comments came on Second Sight Films' new limited edition 4K release of The Nice Guys. His comments were also made after Gosling previously said it was unlikely a sequel would happen after The Angry Birds Movie hurt their release at the box office. Black went on to detail how challenging a sequel to The Nice Guys may be due to all the parties involved, per /Film. "I know the rights situation on The Nice Guys is a bit difficult. Joel [Silver] is a producer, Warner Bros. is the distributor, there's an overseas company that Ken Kao is a producer on," Black explained. "So to carve it out and make sure — in other words, can you make the sequel? Yes. Will it be financially feasible once you pay off everyone involved, including the actors getting their bump?" "That's the problem—is you're gonna present something that the actors have to agree to, that's a good script, and that is going to be very expensive and the studio's going to say, 'Well, didn't the last one sort of bomb at the theaters?' And you say, 'Yeah, but we want you to spend twice as much on this one anyway to get everyone back.'" So while Black didn't entirely shoot down the idea, it seems like it's an extremely long shot that fans are ever treated to The Nice Guys 2. But keep your fingers crossed, because the idea even being mentioned nine years later is a positive, at least. The Nice Guys earned an impressive 91 percent critic score from Rotten Tomatoes, while picking up a 79 percent rating on the fan-focused Gosling Fan-Favorite Movie 'The Nice Guys' Gets Long-Awaited Sequel Update first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 14, 2025
