Teen accused in Brandon high school sword attack planned to hurt others, police chief says
The 16-year-old accused of seriously assaulting another student with a sword at a Brandon high school Tuesday was planning to attack more victims, police say.
Brandon Police Service Chief Tyler Bates released new details Wednesday morning of the sword attack at Neelin High School.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, Bates told a news conference.

Brandon Police Service Chief Tyler Bates said today that police don't yet know where the teen got the sword or whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
'It's clear that the suspect had malicious intentions and our officers' intervention on this day prevented further bloodshed,' said Bates. 'We know that certainly the harms that were intended were beyond the individual victim involved.'
The 15-year-old victim remains in stable condition in hospital with stab wounds to his chest, thighs, forearms and hands.
The accused teen, who is in custody, is facing charges of attempted murder, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disguise with intent.
The disguise with intent charge suggests the teen tried to conceal his identity, but Bates said he could not reveal those details.
The 16-year-old appeared in a Brandon courtroom Wednesday morning.
Bates said police don't yet know where the teen got the sword or whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
'Clearly the actions are deranged,' he said in response to a question about whether mental illness is suspected as a factor.
'In terms of the medical situation involving the youth involved, that will be something that will be further assessed. We need to understand and know why and dissect what contributed to this so we can prevent future incidents of this nature.'
Brandon police responded to a call from a Neelin student who said, 'a male is going crazy and holding a sword' at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The response was led by a BPS school resource officer, who got to the school within three minutes, Bates said Wednesday.
Officers found the teen several minutes later and used a Taser electroshock weapon during the arrest, while other police gave the victim emergency first aid.
'Their heroic actions directly prevented further harm,' Bates said.
School officials took immediate emergency action to protect students.
'Were it not for those lockdown procedures and the safe securing of the students that were in harm's way, (and) the staff that were in harm's way, for that matter, we would be having a very different discussion today,' the police chief said.

The school resource officer had no prior interactions with the student accused in the attack, said Bates, adding police are thinking of the young victim and his family as 'he recovers from this senseless act of violence.'
'A school should always be a place of safety, a place to learn, grow and thrive,' he said.
Mathew Gustafson, superintendent of the Brandon School Division, said he's concerned for the well being of students, their families and staff at the high school after the attack.
'We have a crisis response team in place, but our support will not only be for today, but will be ongoing into the future,' said Gustafson.

Sword attack at Brandon school racially motivated, police confirm
BRANDON — Police say a gruesome sword attack on a student at Neelin High School was part of a plot by the 16-year-old accused to target people of colour and immigrants. Brandon police Chief Tyler Bates said there is digital and eyewitness evidence that the accused was 'anti-immigration' and specifically targeted people of colour at the school June 10. A 15-year-old Black student was viciously assaulted. 'When you have an offender that is armed, that is walking past Caucasian students and having no intent to harm those students, but actively pursuing students of colour, you know that certainly speaks to a racialized motive,' Bates said Friday. On June 10, Chinonsu Onuke, 15, was rushed to hospital with stab wounds to his chest, forearms, hands and thighs after a fellow student allegedly stabbed him with a sword. Onuke is recovering with his family at home. Bates said it's still early in the investigation, but investigators have found a significant amount of evidence that the teen's 'racial and political ideologies' were motivating factors behind the attack. 'This is disturbing, and no one should ever fear for their safety because of the colour of their skin, and no child should be made to feel unsafe in a place of learning,' Bates said. 'There is no place in our community for racism, hate, or violence of any kind.' The 16-year-old remains in custody; he has been charged with attempted murder, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disguise with intent. Police gave an update on the investigation one day after Premier Wab Kinew went to Brandon to apologize in person to the victim and his family 'on behalf of the Indigenous people.' Police have said the assault was stopped before more people could be hurt. At the time, the school had gone into lockdown. Police arrived in about three minutes and used a stun gun to arrest the teen. Bates said he understands the community's concern and thanked people for their support. He said BPS is working diligently and making sure no detail is overlooked in the investigation. 'The mortal danger encountered at Neelin High School has affected us all, but has united Brandonites in resilience, kindness and opposition to racism and hatred,' he said. Bates said it's clear there is work to be done to ensure students' safety at school, and BPS will continue to work alongside partners in education, mental health and community organizations to keep schools safe and inclusive. In an interview with the Brandon Sun, Bates said no hate-related charges have been laid against the accused, and if the Crown attorneys decided to add them, it could take months. Bates said the accused is a 'youth in crisis' and needs help and support to get him into a healthy state of mind. 'There were many that were at risk that day just by virtue of their complexion, and that's a sad statement for that to have transpired in the city of Brandon and one that I think is a sobering reality that we have to be mindful of,' Bates said. HOUSTON – Canada coach Jesse Marsch is downplaying a CONCACAF investigation into his actions during the Canadian men's opening game at the Gold Cup. Marsch told a news conference in Houston, in advance of Canada's game against Curaçao on Saturday, that the issue was of more interest to the media than the team. Noting that the disciplinary process was ongoing, he asked that questions focus on football. Winnipeg cops seek man in hockey jersey accused of violent attack
Winnipeg police are hoping for the public's help in identifying a suspect accused of putting a 34-year-old victim in hospital after a violent assault Thursday evening. Police said the victim was found unconscious on Navy Way around 5 p.m. He was taken to hospital with a head injury. He told police a stranger got into an argument with him before the assault. Witnesses, police said, have described the suspect as a tall male between the ages of 25 and 30, with shaggy brown hair and a short brown beard. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a blue Winnipeg Jets jersey with the name and number of former Jets star Dustin Byfuglien on the back.
