Zahid needs to clarify Barisan's election strategy, says MCA veep
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi must clarify whether the coalition will collaborate with the unity government or partner with Pakatan Harapan in the next general election, says MCA vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.
Tan said that component parties require leadership and clear direction on this unresolved issue.
On Sunday (June 15), Ahmad Zahid stated that Barisan component parties - including MCA and MIC - would continue to have opportunities to contest in the 16th General Election (GE16).
However, Tan said that his party's leadership has yet to start detailed seat discussions with other Barisan parties.
Tan also highlighted that Zahid's statement about Barisan contesting under its own banner lacks clear direction for the national polls.
"While Ahmad Zahid recently suggested that MCA would have a chance to contest in the upcoming election, it needs clarification because the MCA leadership has not had detailed discussions with other Barisan component parties about seat distribution," he said.
"As MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon rightly noted, MCA has given Barisan over two years since the conclusion of the 15th General Election to recalibrate and set a strategic path forward.
"To date, no decisive plan has been presented to the component parties," Tan added in a statement on Monday (June 16).
He urged that, in the spirit of genuine partnership and unity within Barisan, MCA calls on the Barisan chairman to start a proper consultation process involving all component parties.
"Seat negotiations and electoral strategy should not be determined or announced unilaterally. These decisions should reflect the collective will and consensus of the Barisan coalition.
"The credibility of Barisan moving forward depends on its ability to operate with transparency, inclusiveness, and a shared purpose. To regain the confidence of the people, we must respect coalition leadership principles, which have held us together through decades of service to the nation," he added.
Earlier, Ahmad Zahid emphasised the importance of remembering the contributions and sacrifices of MCA and MIC, particularly during Umno's split in 1987. He stated it would be inappropriate for Barisan to abandon these parties when they are currently facing challenges.

Dr Wee said that reintroducing the GST could ensure the stability and strength of the country. He said that the GST is widely recognised for its transparency and efficiency. 'A responsible approach would be to exempt certain SMEs and vulnerable groups from the policy, rather than just postponing the rollout. 'A delay is only a short-term fix. In fact, it should be seen as a starting point for reviving the GST,' he said at the E-Invoice Seminar hosted by the MCA Political Education Committee and School of Political Studies earlier today. Dr Wee added that if GST is implemented, the e-invoice function would be included in the taxation software. 'I emphasised that while the government announced a revised timeline for e-invoice implementation on June 5, simply delaying it won't solve the root issues. MCA is of the view that the e-invoice component is a subset of the GST system,' he added. Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that reintroducing GST would unfairly burden lower-income earners. He said the implementation of GST would mean the poor, including fishermen, smallholders, low-wage earners, and street vendors, would be taxed on everyday essentials. On June 9, the Finance Ministry announced that the reviewed and expanded SST rates would come into effect next month. The measure is aimed at strengthening the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base, the ministry said.

Sembrong Umno renews call to lift Hishammuddin's suspension
KLUANG: Sembrong Umno has renewed its call for the party leadership to lift the suspension of its former division chief, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, without conditions. The motion was tabled at the division's annual delegates meeting today, marking the second consecutive year it has sought the reinstatement of the former defence minister. Johor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who officiated the meeting, opened his speech by crediting Hishammuddin as his political mentor. "Sembrong is not just a political constituency. "It's where I first learned the meaning of struggle, and the man who brought me into this journey was Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein." He said this during the meeting at the Sembrong Umno Community Hall here. Although Hishammuddin was not present, Onn Hafiz acknowledged grassroots sentiment and pledged to convey the motion to the party's leadership. Umno suspended Hishammuddin for six years on Jan 27, 2023, amid a purge that saw other senior figures — such as former Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, former Information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan and former Selangor chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar — removed or disciplined. Hishammuddin has refused to appeal his suspension, maintaining that he has still not been told the reason behind the disciplinary action. Sembrong Umno chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdul Rashid said that the motion reflected grassroots demand for the reinstatement of the veteran. He added that Hishammuddin's experience and influence were vital to Umno's strength, especially with the 16th General Election looming. "It would be good for the party if leaders like him were brought back. He carries a unique aura in Sembrong, and I am almost certain voters here want him to remain their MP." Ghani urged Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to seriously consider the matter, saying Hishammuddin's leadership was needed to stabilise and fortify the party.

He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would allow another party to take its place. 'If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities,' said Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister. Mohamad, who is MP for Rembau, said this when opening the Cheras Umno division delegates' meeting here yesterday, Bernama reported. He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas. We must maintain harmony and project ourselves as a moderate, peaceful force,' he added.
