Seah Kian Peng nominated for re-election as Speaker of Parliament
SINGAPORE: Mr Seah Kian Peng will be nominated for re-election as Speaker of Parliament when the House reconvenes on Sep 5 , the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced on Jun 20 .
Mr Seah, 62, has held the position since Aug 2, 2023 , becoming the 11th Speaker of Parliament since the formation of Singapore's First Legislative Assembly in 1955. He will continue to be supported by the two Deputy Speakers, Mr Christopher de Souza and Ms Jessica Tan Soon Neo , both of whom assist in presiding over parliamentary proceedings when the Speaker is unavailable.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong described Mr Seah as having brought 'a steady hand and thoughtful leadership to the House' over the past year, presiding over debates 'with fairness' and maintaining 'dignity and decorum' during proceedings.
Mr Seah has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Braddell Heights in Marine Parade GRC since 2006, having been successfully re-elected in 2011, 2015, and 2020. Between 2011 and 2015 , he served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament and chaired the Estimates Committee .
Outside of Parliament, Mr Seah has held various board positions in both the public and private sectors, including SingTel , National Parks Board , Health Promotion Board , ST Logistics , Income Insurance , and Trust Bank , among others. He also served as the founding chairman of the Harvard Business School Club of Singapore .
Mr Seah was awarded the Outstanding CEO of the Year at the Singapore Business Awards 2019/2020 , recognising his leadership in the cooperative and social sectors.
Educated at Raffles Institution , Mr Seah was a Colombo Plan Scholar and graduated with First-Class Honours from the University of New South Wales in Australia. Role of the Speaker of Parliament
The Speaker presides over House sittings and ensures order during debates in accordance with the Standing Orders of Parliament . Although the Speaker may be elected from outside Parliament, the individual must meet the qualifications required to stand for a parliamentary election.
The Speaker manages debates by deciding which Members of Parliament (MPs) may speak, oversees voting on motions, and provides rulings on procedural issues. The Speaker does not participate in debates and may vote only if they are an elected MP with an original vote. There is no casting vote in the event of a tie.
In addition to parliamentary duties, the Speaker represents the House in engagements with other legislatures and during official events. The Speaker also oversees the administration of Parliament and its secretariat.

BEIJING — Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will make a five-day official visit from June 22 to China, where he will seek to chart the strategic direction of bilateral ties with Chinese leaders. PM Wong will also travel to Tianjin – a port city about 1.5 hours south-east of Beijing by car — to attend an event commonly known as Summer Davos. He will take part in a dialogue with World Economic Forum (WEF) president Borge Brende. The official name for Summer Davos is the WEF Annual Meeting of the New Champions. Although this is PM Wong's introductory visit to China in his new capacity as head of Singapore's fourth-generation leadership, he is returning to familiar ground. Since entering politics in 2011, he has visited China almost every year except during the Covid-19 pandemic. His previous China-related roles included co-chairing the Singapore-Sichuan Trade and Investment Committee and overseeing the Tianjin Eco-City when he was Minister for National Development. He last visited China in December 2023, when as Deputy Prime Minister he co-chaired the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation with Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang. Following his appointment as Prime Minister in 2024, DPM Gan Kim Yong took over that role. Singapore has prioritised keeping ties with China warm through regular high-level engagements. For this trip to China, PM Wong will be joined by a new member of his Cabinet — Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance Jeffrey Siow — who entered politics in the May 2025 General Election. Another new face is Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, a former Nominated Member of Parliament who contested the 2025 GE as a People's Action Party candidate. He was appointed in May as Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of National Development, and will be sworn in later in 2025. SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will visit China from Jun 22 to Jun 26 and meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This will be Mr Wong's first visit to China as Singapore's prime minister, and both sides will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China. 'It is also an opportunity for leaders on both sides to exchange views on bilateral issues as well as regional and international developments,' said the Prime Minister's Office in a statement on Sunday (Jun 22). Mr Wong last met Mr Li and Mr Xi respectively in October and November 2024 on the sidelines of multilateral meetings. He last visited China in December 2023 as deputy prime minister for the 19th Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation. This time, he will meet Mr Xi, and be hosted to a welcome ceremony and a dinner banquet by Mr Li. He will also meet Mr Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress In Beijing, Mr Wong will also engage Singaporeans in the Chinese capital at a reception. In Tianjin, the Prime Minister will attend the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting of New Champions, often referred to as Summer Davos, and take part in a dialogue session with WEF president Borge Brende. Mr Wong will also attend an official dinner hosted by Mr Li for foreign leaders attending Summer Davos. Mr Wong will conclude his trip on Jun 26 and be on leave on Jun 27. In his absence, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong will be Acting Prime Minister from Jun 22 to Jun 25, while Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam will take on the role from Jun 26 to Jun 27.
