KWAP to advance Malaysia's sustainability agenda via forest-based initiatives

KUALA LUMPUR: Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan) (KWAP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia Forest Fund (MFF) to advance Malaysia's sustainability agenda through forest-based solutions.
Chief executive officer Datuk Nik Amlizan Mohamed said the collaboration will be a game-changer for both KWAP and Malaysia's broader sustainability efforts, reinforcing its commitment to drive stewardship through impactful actions and pursuing purpose beyond returns.
"By contributing to the development of a credible, nationally anchored carbon ecosystem, we aim to empower our investee companies with the tools they need to meet their net-zero commitment while also making significant contributions to Malaysia's climate and biodiversity goals," she said.
The MoU features the Forest Conservation Certificate to support domestic conservation initiatives, focusing on preserving the country's vital biodiversity and ecosystems.
MFF will oversee the development of the forest carbon offset, a market-based mechanism that allows companies to offset their emissions through investments in forest conservation projects that reduce, remove and avoid carbon emissions.
Through the partnership, KWAP becomes a participant in the National Forest Carbon Offset technical working group established by MFF.
The working group aims to ensure the needs of institutional investors, including the nuances of ESG investing, are integrated into the framework, where relevant.
This participation will also help align foreign carbon offset standards with international carbon market requirements and best practices.
MFF chief executive officer Datuk Shah Redza Hussein said the partnership is a pivotal step in the mission to strengthen Malaysia's carbon market, achieving the nation's sustainability targets and accelerate meaningful climate action.
"By leveraging nature-based solutions, particularly through the Forest Conservation Certificate and the upcoming Forest Carbon Offset, we are creating a pathway for businesses towards achieving net-zero goals while supporting forest conservation, aligning with national climate commitments.
"Our work with KWAP and other stakeholders will drive long-term environmental and economic benefits, not only for Malaysia but for the global community as we strive towards a greener and more resilient future," he added.
KWAP and MFF will continue to explore opportunities to enhance the forest carbon offset system and other potential nature-based solutions initiatives, ensuring they become key drivers for sustainable development in Malaysia.
The partnership will also support ongoing efforts to build local capacity for biodiversity and forestry management, ensuring that the benefits of the projects reach the communities directly involved.
KWAP also will continue working with MFF by engaging interested parties to drive joint initiatives.
This includes possible partnerships with other government-linked investment companies and organisations, in support of the GEAR-uP seek to build upon its collaboration with MFF by engaging interested parties in driving collective action.

PM: Embrace diversity as a strength, not a source of division

KUCHING: Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. "Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. "Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. "The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. "The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia," he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Sunday night, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event. Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the Asean chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders. He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips chairman and chief executive officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. "So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. "And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States," he said. Meanwhile, Anwar also announced that he will meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto this Friday to discuss a proposal for Sarawak to be positioned as a hub for the Asean Power Grid (APG). He said Sarawak, with its strengths in hydroelectric, gas and hydrogen energy, has the potential to spearhead the APG, not only by linking to Sabah and Indonesia's Kalimantan, but also extending to the southern Philippines.

He said Malaysia's leadership at the regional level has earned recognition from Asean member states as well as external partners who appreciate Malaysia's approach as a multiracial and multi-religious nation living in harmony. "We have seen several recognitions given by our Asean partners who observe how we develop our country with people of different races and religions living under one roof as one big family. "In this regard, we in Sarawak certainly give our full support towards positioning Malaysia as a nation respected by the world today," he said. He was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Sunday night (June 22). With the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Abang Johari said the state government is committed to realising the Asean Grid project, which has great potential and would enable Sarawak to play a strategic role as a major energy hub in the region. "I had a brief discussion with the Prime Minister earlier, and I hope that one of the strategies we adopt will help realise your vision for the Asean Grid, which will provide an economic development boost to Asean, particularly through Malaysia's contribution," he said. The Premier also said the presence of Anwar and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the cultural event reflected the strong relationship between the federal government and Sarawak. "In fact, I was informed that the Prime Minister had another engagement scheduled for tonight. But he said, 'No, I want to go to Sarawak'… This reflects the close bond of brotherhood," he added. Themed 'Peji Kenep Panau Pegep', which means 'United We Progress' in the Kayan ethnic language, the event featured traditional performances by the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh and Iban communities. The celebration was graced by the presence of Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. Also in attendance, among others, were Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Bin Awang Ali Basah, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Gawai Dayak celebration main organising committee chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. - Bernama

SD Guthrie, Sime Darby Property to develop industrial and logistics hub on Carey Island

PETALING JAYA: SD Guthrie Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd (SDP) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop up to 2,000 acres of land on Carey Island, Selangor, to support sustainable economic growth and innovation. The joint venture agreement is a culmination of discussions which began in 2023, and is driven by a shared vision for long-term value creation that will be formalised through the establishment of a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The collaboration represents a unique opportunity for both companies to unlock Carey Island's full potential, transforming it into a leading industrial and logistics hub that will co-exist with the integrated and well-established palm oil business on the island and complement the existing operations at Westports and Northport in Port Klang. Both SD Guthrie and SDP are strategic investee companies of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), one of the largest fund management companies in Malaysia. PNB will nominate the chairman of the newly formed SPV. PNB president and group chief executive Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad said, 'We laud and greatly support this joint venture between SD Guthrie and SDP, which aligns with national aspirations and GEAR-uP initiatives by the government in catalysing domestic investments. This collaboration between PNB's two strategic companies will provide a boost towards the sustainable development of this high potential area as well as help bolster further Malaysia's economic and industrialisation growth.' The 2,000 acre site on Carey Island provides the scalability required for world-class logistics facilities, integrated supply chains and high-value industrial developments, required to attract global players and investments. The port will thus be well positioned to compete with ports in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, giving a boost to Malaysia's aspirations to become a logistics powerhouse in the region. Today, Carey Island is celebrated for its fully integrated oil palm plantation, the last one of its kind in the Greater Klang Valley. It is an important location for the Malaysian plantation industry and is used frequently to host visitors from around the world, including foreign government delegations, ambassadors, research and development (R&D) institutions and universities. SD Guthrie operates two estates and palm oil mills on the island, all of which are certified to the highest sustainability standards in the world. Also on the island are a kernel crushing plant, biodiesel plant, R&D facilities, robotics and innovation centre and nursery. Palm oil produced in Carey Island is processed in two large refineries located nearby in Langat and Port Klang, which serve customers from around the world. There are also 14 historical buildings on Carey Island that are listed as heritage sites by the National Heritage Department, a large biodiversity park and sensitive mangrove ecosystems that are maintained by SD Guthrie. Combined with the thriving plantation business, the new development on Carey Island will stimulate economic growth, generate employment opportunities and uplift the local economy while preserving the valuable heritage elements of the site. The strategic approach to foster sustainable value creation will ensure that the needs and well-being of local communities, including the indigenous Mah Meri people on the island, are prioritised. SD Guthrie owns 79% of Carey Island, or 28,646 acres. The plantation is managed sustainably to ensure environmental conservation. In 2024, SD Guthrie announced its expansion into two new business areas: industrial parks and renewable energy. In a joint statement issued by the two companies, SD Guthrie group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said, 'We fully support the government's aspirations to accelerate the growth of international trade and cater to the demand for innovative industrial facilities. Carey Island has been identified by the government as the new site for a world-class port due to its suitable and strategic location near Port Klang, and proximity to Pulau Indah. 'Additionally, the island is conveniently connected to the city via the South Klang Valley Expressway which integrates with the North-South Expressway, ensuring accessibility.' SDP group managing director and CEO Datuk Seri Azmir Merican said, 'We are excited to partner with SD Guthrie on this timely opportunity to unlock value in Carey Island as a dynamic port and advance the nation's aspirations of becoming a regional logistics and economic hub. The collaboration allows us to begin master planning and designing a future-ready industrial ecosystem that will serve the needs of businesses and communities for years to come.'
