UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on Israeli-Iranian escalation
NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency session to discuss the escalation between the Israeli occupation and Iran.
The meeting, convened at Iran's request, has been supported by Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia. The Council is expected to hear a briefing from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The United Nations has renewed its call for an immediate de-escalation of the military confrontation between the Israeli entity and Iran, urging a ceasefire. It emphasized that diplomacy remains the best and only path to address concerns over Iran's nuclear program and broader regional security issues.
The Israeli occupation launched aerial strikes on Iran at dawn on June 13, targeting nuclear facilities and missile bases, assassinating military commanders and nuclear scientists, and killing or injuring hundreds of civilians. In response, Tehran retaliated with ballistic missiles and drone attacks.
