Reds closing in on Wirtz - so what now?
With Liverpool set to shatter their transfer record for Florian Wirtz, fans are overjoyed at the prospect of watching the diminutive playmaker represent the club. But what now?Wirtz plays in midfield...If Wirtz takes up a place in Arne Slot's midfield, someone has to miss out. It is unlikely to be Ryan Gravenberch given his rise into the anchoring role, which means Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister become vulnerable. Those two share similar stats, with Szobozslai creating more 'big' chances across the season, and serving up more goals and assists. Both are combative but Mac Allister outshines the Hungarian in this area. In 2024-25, Mac Allister won 48% of his duels to Szoboszlai's 43%. The Argentine was also more accurate with the ball when in the opposition half, completing 86% of his passes compared to 83% in the case of his midfield team-mate.So what do you value more? Creative output, or battling qualities and passing poise? It is remarkably close and in truth hard to imagine either missing out. Perhaps, if Wirtz is to play in midfield, he, Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szobozslai will rotate based on fatigue and circumstance. Mac Allister's ability to also play in the anchoring role will add to the flexibility.Where do you think Wirtz will play if the transfer gets over the line? Tell us here
Wirtz plays as a false nine...Liverpool's wide areas are under lock and key. Mohamed Salah holds the right side, while Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo offer variety on the left - assuming they both stay. Diaz's sublime goal for Colombia against Argentina in this international window underlined the ingenuity he brings, while Gakpo - so often called to the touchline by Slot for the sharing of information - is invaluable in a multitude of ways.Last season, Gakpo made nine headed clearances - more than any player listed in the article - and his duel success at 51% comfortably outstrips those mentioned.Diaz, of course, has played centrally too, boosting the variety available to Slot. But is it indeed the centre-forward role where Wirtz will be deployed? A false nine position - dropping to receive passes, creating room for runs into central spaces for the likes of Salah, Gakpo and Diaz.It would be a style Kopites have seen before, when Roberto Firmino built his legacy by retreating from forward positions into areas where he could link play, thus allowing the relentless Salah and Sadio Mane to prosper from wider berths. The output of Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez perhaps points to the central-attacking area being the one where Liverpool lack a man in form.Slot's decision will be fascinating. The qualities of the players available to him once the Wirtz deal gets over the line lend themselves to flexibility and fluid changes of position. The expected Wirtz move has thrilled fans. The question now is from what area of the pitch he will he try to thrill them once wearing the red of Liverpool? How will Slot use Wirtz in his team if German joins? Have your say here

Alexander Isak update emerges as Viktor Gyokeres rejects £11m-a-year offer
Arsenal are expected to be amongst the Premier League's top spenders this summer as Mikel Arteta and Co look for a new striker and further signings to help them in their latest title bid Arsenal are still on the hunt for a new No.9. And with the transfer window starting to heat up, the Gunners could soon be making a play for their top target. It still remains unclear exactly who that is; Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are seen as the two most likely options to spearhead Arsenal 's attack in the upcoming 2025-26 season and both are expected to leave their respective clubs this summer. Arsenal and Liverpool also hold an interest in Alexander Isak, although it is expected the Newcastle star will stay put for now. With Mikel Arteta also keen on adding a new wide forward to his attacking ranks plenty of activity is expected in north London over the coming weeks. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around The Emirates... Isak staying put All parties believe that it's a 'certainty' that Alexander Isak will remain with Newcastle this summer despite interest in the Sweden international's services from Arsenal and Liverpool. Both Arsenal and newly minted Premier League champions are in the market for a new No.9 this summer and Isak - the top-flight's second highest scorer last term with 23 goals - is a signing both clubs would love to make. However, Newcastle are in a position of strength after qualifying for the Champions League and, as per The Telegraph, it's expected they will keep hold of their star striker this summer. Gyokeres rejects huge offer Viktor Gyokeres is said to have rejected a significant approach from Juventus which would have seen the sought-after Sporting Lisbon star land a lucrative contract worth £11million-a-year. It emerged earlier this week that the Italian giants had tabled the huge offer in a bid to land Gyokeres ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United. But with Arsenal being Gyokeres' preferred destination, Corriere dello Sport report that Juventus have been informed the Swede will not be joining them. Zubimendi in London Martin Zubimendi flew into London Friday to finalise his summer transfer from Real Sociedad, according to The Athletic. Zubimendi, 26, came close to joining Liverpool last year before a change of heart at the eleventh hour, but it emerged back in the spring that a move to Arsenal was as good as done. And official confirmation of said deal could now be imminent with Zubimendi in the UK to put pen to paper.

England football star Kieran Trippier and his wife 'to divorce' - after he broke his silence on their marriage split
English ace Kieran Tripper and wife Charlotte are divorcing, according to reports. The Newcastle United right-back revealed earlier this week that he split from his wife Charlotte more than a year ago. But a source said that the pair are definitely committed to making the separation permanent, the Sun has now reported. Trippier, 34, married Charlotte in Cyprus in 2016 and the couple have three children togther, Jacob, and two daughters, Esme and Isla. The source said: 'Charlotte has been open with her friends about getting a divorce. She has been seeking legal advice and is keen to move on with her life. 'Kieran is a devoted dad but as a partner it hasn't worked out as Charlotte had hoped. 'She has moved house and started anew, so getting a divorce has been the next logical step. Charlotte wants to keep things as amicable as possible with Kieran.' The 34-year-old football star said on Wednesday in a statement on Instagram stories: 'I feel I have no choice but to confirm publicly that myself and Charlotte separated over a year ago. 'Myself and Charlotte separated over a year ago. I have not commented previously as it is a private matter and we want to protect our children.' Kieran and Charlotte married in 2016 and sources say that they were keen to keep their split a secret so their kids would not have to deal with any upset. However, it has been reported that Charlotte has a new property where she lives without Kieran. Rumours of their split began during last year's Euros in Germany when Charlotte unfollowed her husband on Instagram on the end of the England's final group game. She also did not jet to Germany like other WAGs. She then posted a cryptic message on social media, saying: 'Sooner or later you get over the s*** you swore you'd never get over and it's the best feeling in the world.' Further posts included the caption 'the sun is shining, happy Monday', where Charlotte was seen sitting in the car listening to music while she waited to pick up her children from school. Meanwhile, the footballer, 34, was reportedly seen mingling in Ibiza with another woman this week. The Newcastle United player was spotted partying with Geordie Shore star Chloe Ferry and her pals including Love Island star Jess Harding at Ushuaia club on the White Isle. The sportsman announced his retirement from international football in August last year - with MailOnline revealing how he wanted to to focus on life outside the game following his marriage breakdown. MailOnline has approached representatives of Kieran Trippier for comment, and also Charlotte Trippier.

Marc Guehi's comments on Liverpool and 'very intelligent player' speaks volumes
Marc Guehi has been selected as Liverpool's next signing once Jarell Quansah departs for Bayer Leverkusen and it appears that the Crystal Palace star is already a big fan of some of his potential teammates Marc Guehi has hailed Liverpool 's 'fantastic players' including Mohamed Salah ahead of a potential move to Anfield. The Crystal Palace captain has been identified as the Reds' next summer signing once they get deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez over the line. Guehi has been identified as a replacement for academy graduate Jarell Quansah, with the defender set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the England defender, with his Crystal Palace deal due to expire in 12 months' time. And while there appears to be some work left to do to get a deal thrashed out, Guehi has already made his feelings very clear on Liverpool. Speaking ahead of taking on the Merseysiders back in 2023, he said: "I don't think there's any good time to play Liverpool, really. Everyone knows how strong they are as a team, they've got some fantastic players." Having hailed Liverpool in general, Guehi also had special praise for one of his potential future teammates way back in 2021. After Palace had fallen to a 3-0 defeat at Anfield - a game in which Salah scored - the defender praised the Egyptian forward. He said: 'He's so quick. Very quick, a very intelligent player. The way they play is very direct, they like to get the ball forward to their front players as quick as possible.' Liverpool could potentially face competition for Guehi as they attempt to seal his services. Newcastle are also long-term admirers of the former Chelsea defender having had a clutch of bids rejected for his services - the highest of which was around the £65m mark. Palace originally signed him from Chelsea for around £18m in 2021 and he has gone on to make 155 appearances for the Selhurst Park side and helped them to win the FA Cup last season. Despite being keen on keeping him around, it already appears that the Eagles have already started their succession planning. They are keen on a deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande as a potential replacement. Guehi's arrival at Anfield would round off what has been an expensive summer so far for Liverpool. They have already added Jeremie Frimpong to their squad for £35m, while the £100m-plus signing of Florian Wirtz is expected to go through imminently. Liverpool are also expected to sign Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez for around £45m. Goalkeepers Armin Pecsi and Giorgi Mamardashvilli have also finalised moves to Anfield this summer. Outgoings have been on the agenda for Reds chiefs too. Caoimhin Kelleher was sold to Brentford, while Liverpool also earned a considerable fee for Trent Alexander-Arnold despite the defender being at the end of his deal. Quansah is also expected to fetch around £34m. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
