Nissan and Honda may co-develop GT-R and NSX, despite merger talks falling apart. Check details

Hindustan Times04-05-2025

Although not set in stone, a GT-R and NSX partnership is possible, and, in fact, necessary in the current automotive environment
Though their formal merger is on hold, reports have surfaced that Nissan and Honda are looking at the potential to collaborate on their next-generation performance icons using the Nissan GT-R and the Honda NSX. While nothing is signed yet, both automakers are considering sharing platform technology but maintaining their own distinct engineering philosophies.
A report by Drive.com stated that Nissan North America's SVP and Chief Planning Officer, Ponz Pandikuthira, encouraged said discussions in a conversation at the 2025 New York Motor Show about the possibility of co-developing the GT-R and NSX. He stressed they would try to maintain the uniqueness of the vehicles and not simply produce rebadged versions.

'Could we build the next GT-R and NSX on a shared platform, while keeping each car true to its legacy? I think we can," Pandikuthira stated. He made it clear that these cars must never be cloned. The NSX is known for its all-aluminium precise lightness while the GT-R is known for extreme power and aggressive performance. They illustrate two distinctly different performance philosophies. Future Powertrains: Hybrid and Electric on the Horizon
Even though the current NSX has been discontinued, rumors surrounding an all-electric replacement persist. Pandikuthira clarified that an electric "NSX-type" model wouldn't rule out the possibility of a separate, new-generation NSX albeit a unique one. Meanwhile, the upcoming R36 GT-R will be hybrid and aims to take on its European rivals like Porsche 911—just like the R35 did back in 2007.
Pandikuthira mentioned that Aston Martin's relationship with Mercedes-AMG is one instance of how to share technologies while remaining separate brands. He mentioned that although not set in stone, a GT-R and NSX partnership is possible, and, in fact, necessary in the current automotive environment.

In spite of the collapse of the proposed merger between Honda and Nissan earlier in the year, Nissan's new CEO Ivan Espinosa has maintained dialogue with Honda leadership. Espinosa has "never stopped talking with Honda," per Pandikuthira, and the desire for strategic partnerships has been left open.
While not a confirmation, Nissan's comments indicate interest in a partnership as both OEMs navigate the future of performance vehicles in an electrified world rapidly evolving.

Palou wins at Road America to boost IndyCar season lead

Alex Palou won his sixth IndyCar race in nine season starts, the Spaniard holding off Sweden's Felix Rosenqvist to capture Sunday's Grand Prix at Road America on low fuel. HT Image Palou boosted his season points lead by taking his first victory since last month's Indianapolis 500, enduring after 55 laps over the 4.014-mile, 14-turn road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. "It was a crazy race," Palou said. "Losing a ton of positions and then making them, it was a tough race for everybody." Palou became the first IndyCar driver since A.J. Foyt in 1975 to win six of the first nine races in a campaign. Rosenqvist was second, two seconds back, and American Santino Ferrucci was third, running out of fuel one turn after the checkered flag. Four caution flags in the first 23 laps prompted teams to adopt differing fuel strategies, and by lap 28 it was New Zealand's Scott Dixon leading. American Josef Newgarden was second before crashing on turn 14, leaving Dixon ahead with Palou and Rossi just behind after a lap-31 restart. The race came down to those three trying to conserve fuel over the final laps to reach the end while Rosenqvist, on full fuel in fourth, tried to overtake them. Rossi went to the pits with four laps remaining and Dixon pitted for fuel a lap later, leaving Palou to outlast Rosenqvist with his fuel tank nearly dry. "Kudos to the team for the amazing strategy and Honda for giving us the fuel mileage we needed to make it at the end," Palou said. "Couldn't be happier." Palou, seeking his fourth season title in five years, leads the points chase with 386 with American Kyle Kirkwood, a three-time winner this season, 93 points adrift in second. Palou matched the IndyCar record of three wins at Road America, also held by Mario and Michael Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi. Rosenqvist settled for second on the track where his only IndyCar triumph came in 2020. js/bb

Works on Sankar Vilas flyover to begin despite pending land issues

Guntur: Notwithstanding the pending legal issues with regard to land acquisition, the district administration has decided to kick-start the works on the prestigious Sankar Vilas flyover. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The R&B department has been given a go ahead by the district collector to launch the works from Monday. The first phase of the four-lane rail over bridge (ROB) will be launched from AC college junction (East constituency). The Union govt has granted Rs 98 crore to take up the long-pending flyover project almost eight months ago. Curiously, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) could not complete land acquisition due to strong resistance from the owners of commercial properties on Brodipet main road. About 50 property owners approached the court and got stay orders on acquisition of their properties until payment of compensation under the land acquisition Act. However, GMC had been negotiating them to accept the transferable development rights (TDR) bonds as it did not have sufficient funds to give the compensation in cash. The GMC estimated that it would require at least Rs 50 crore to clear the compensation through land acquisition Act. While the property owners have been waiting for the relief, district administration gave them a shocker by deciding to launch the work. Sources said that this is a strategic attempt to push the property owners, who refused to budge and accept the TDR bonds as compensation, into a corner. Sources said that the main road on both the sides of existing ROB will be closed for vehicular movement from Monday and R&B department will start bringing down the existing flyover before laying the pillars for the new obe.
