Ethan Fang has added a couple significant trophies to his resume over the last month.
The rising junior at Oklahoma State won the 130th British Amateur Championship on Saturday, beating East Tennessee State sophomore Gavin Tiernan 1 up with a clutch birdie on the 36th hole at Royal St. George's. Fang became the first American to win the Amateur since Drew Weaver in 2007, and he's the first Oklahoma State player since Bob Dickson to win the Amateur.
Dickson was also the last player to win both the British Amateur and U.S. Amateur in the same year. Fang will have the opportunity to do so in August at Olympic Club in San Francisco.
'It feels great. Still doesn't feel real yet. But I'm sure it'll kick in, and I'll celebrate with my team," Fang said. 'I was hitting it well all day, and I knew if I just stayed in it, some putts would drop, kind of have him work for it, and it ended up working out."
With the win, Fang gets an exemption into the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush next month as well as the 2026 Masters and U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. In addition to the three majors, he earned a spot in the DP World Tour's Betfred British Masters.
Fang led 2 up with three holes to play before Tiernan buried consecutive birdie putts to tie the match heading into the 36th hole. That's when Fang, hitting his approach shot first, floated an iron to the front part of the green and watched as it released to about 5 feet left of the flag. Tiernan's approach found the far side of the green, and he nearly jarred the birdie look, but when he didn't make it, Fang bounced back and clinched the match, becoming the 22nd American to win the British Am.
Another important milestone for Fang is that he has virtually locked up his spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team, as if there was any doubt for the No. 7 amateur in the world. Last month, he went 2-1 in match play to help the Cowboys win their 12th national championship in school history. Now he has one of the biggest amateur events in the world, and by summer's end will join Jackson Koivun, Ben James and Michael La Sasso donning the red, white and blue at Cypress Point in September.

UFC on ABC 8 results: Curtis Blaydes squeaks by Rizvan Kuniev – but win came at potential cost

Curtis Blaydes is back in the win column, but at what cost? On the UFC on ABC 8 main card Saturday, Blaydes (18-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) defeated Rizvan Kuniev via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). The event took place at Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. The fight was competitive yet relatively uneventful. Kuniev, who made his UFC debut, was not out of place. After a strong first round from Blaydes, the hulking Russian took it to the perennial American contender. While one judge scored it for Kuniev, the other two leaned Blaydes. The closeness of the fight could be due to injury, as Blayes revealed during his in-cage interview that his left MCL "popped" in the first round. Should he be granted a relatively clean bill of health, Blaydes said he wants to fight Ciryl Gane next. Despite the divisional longevity for both men, they've never fought. With the victory, Blaydes bounces back into the win column in his first competition since July 2024 when he was finished in one minute by Tom Aspinall. Kuniev, 33, comes up short in his long-awaited UFC debut. His debut, including twice booked vs. Blaydes, was canceled three times prior to Saturday. Up-to-the-minute UFC Baku results include:

Bellingham scores first Dortmund goal as Reyna sits again

As Gio Reyna failed to see the field again for Borussia Dortmund, Jobe Bellingham scored his first goal for the club in their narrow 4-3 win against Mamelodi Sundowns FC on Saturday at the FIFA Club World Cup. Bellingham, who arrived this summer from recently promoted Sunderland, was able to notch the third goal for the Black and Yellow in their matchup against the South African side. "The goal is a nice bonus," the 19-year-old told DAZN after being named man of the match. "I'm happy that we won, but there are still many things to improve, both for me personally and for the team." Bellingham gave Dortmund a 3-1 lead in the first half when he chested down a clearance from the goalkeeper and hit a volley that went in via a slight deflection. "I practice that so many times, not that exact finish, but arriving late on the edge of the box as a midfielder is something you need to be really good at," Bellingham added. With a $43 million price tag, Dortmund is hoping that Jobe is able to have similar success as his older brother Jude, who played a pivotal part for the side from 2020 to 2023. While Dortmund was able to secure its first win of the Club World Cup, Reyna was an unused substitute again for the German giants. This comes after missing their previous match at the tournament, which would have been a homecoming for the 22-year-old. The U.S. international only featured in 25 matches for Dortmund last season. And with players such as Tajon Buchanan opting to represent their country over their club team for more playing time, questions remain if Reyna should or could have done the same. Fellow American Cole Campbell also didn't feature during the match on Saturday, while 16-year-old Mathis Albert was not included in the squad. Watch Bellingham's first Dortmund goal

49ers 3rd-Round Rookie Linebacker Suffers Fracture

49ers 3rd-Round Rookie Linebacker Suffers Fracture originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers have suffered an offseason injury as rookie linebacker Nick Martin fractured his thumb while lifting weights, as reported by Noah Furtado of the San Francisco Chronicle. Advertisement Early reports were that it was a recent injury, but Furtado clarified the situation on his X account. "Regarding rumors that #49ers third-round LB Nick Martin broke his thumb, he suffered a minor fracture a few weeks ago but did not miss any subsequent practices or workouts, per source. Martin won't need surgery and is expected to be fully healthy by training camp." It's notable that the thumb injury never sidelined Martin and he never missed any offseason practice time. He's expected to be fully ready for the beginning of training camp. The 22-year-old missed seven games of his final season at Oklahoma State with a knee injury, but he's expected to be a contributor in his rookie season after the 49ers drafted him in the third round with the No. 75 overall pick. Advertisement Martin's pick wasn't a surprise, as the team needed to address defense in the draft. Martin was a First-Team All-Big 12 standout who posted 140 tackles with 16 for loss last season, and should have an opportunity to crack the starting lineup early, as San Francisco doesn't have a ton of seasoned veterans at outside linebacker other than Fred Warner. If Martin proves he's healthy, he'll be fighting for playing time with Dee Winters, Tatum Bethune and others. But first, he could have to impress on special teams for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
