Edisi Siasat blocked on Telegram, returns as 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' within hours
KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel Edisi Siasat, which has been publishing crime-related content, was blocked in Malaysia last night. The channel, with 1.8 million followers, was blocked after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it had obtained an interim injunction to prevent the republication of content from it and another channel, Edisi Khas. However, another channel, Edisi Siasat 2.0, was created last night, producing content similar to Edisi Siasat. The New Straits Times has reached out to MCMC for comment. Yesterday, MCMC said the two channels had published content in breach of the Communications and Multimedia Act. It said the injunction was a last resort to stop the spread of harmful content and to prevent the republication of similar material. The commission added that this is the first action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, specifically because Telegram holds a Class Application Service Provider (ASP(C)) licence. The move follows Telegram's repeated failure to address content that has been reported to the platform numerous times, despite various negotiation efforts and cooperation extended by MCMC.

Kota Kinabalu: Muslim women are urged to deepen their understanding of the rights within the institution of marriage as provided under Syariah law, so they do not continue to fall victim to injustice, including abuse, divorce and denial of maintenance or property rights. The Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, said injustices against women in marriage often stem from women's own lack of knowledge and understanding of the rights guaranteed to them under Islamic law and legislation. 'This lack of awareness causes them to remain victims,' she said at the opening of the Madani Women's Forum: Women's Rights in Marriage According to Syariah Law at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex Auditorium. Juliah, who is also President of Mutiara GRS, rejected the perception that women are oppressed in Islam, emphasising that the religion upholds the dignity of women fairly and recognises their vital role in society. 'Islam does not differentiate between men and women in terms of responsibilities and rewards. In fact, women hold a highly respected position in the development of families and civilisation,' she said. She added that when women understand their rights, they are not only able to protect themselves, but also play a critical role in raising morally upright generations and building strong families. Juliah commended the organisation of the forum as an important platform for sharing knowledge, experiences and empowering women with accurate and relevant legal understanding. 'This effort is highly significant because many women still lack clarity about processes such as marriage registration, dissolution of marriage, child custody rights and management of property after divorce,' she said. More reasons to honour the 40pc tax right: Star

Kota Kinabalu: The expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) set to be implemented in July, introduction of a targeted subsidy mechanism for RON95 petrol and the federal government's plan to implement a carbon tax by 2026, are reasons enough for the federal government to immediately implement Sabah's constitutional right to a 40pc net revenue return, without further excuses or delays. Star Tg Aru Division chief Hiew Choon Yu said according to the latest projection by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), Sabah's tax revenue is expected to reach RM6.2 billion in 2025—a historic high that clearly demonstrates Sabah's major contribution to the national economy and tax system. 'Meanwhile, the taxes collected from Sabah by the federal government each year are grossly disproportionate to the allocations returned to the state. 'Under Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution, Sabah is entitled to 40pc of net federal revenue collected from the state. However, this constitutional guarantee has never been truly enforced since 1969,' he said. He added that since 1974, Sabah's 40pc net tax revenue return has never been comprehensively reviewed or reassessed. Despite repeated government promises to review it, there has been no concrete progress. Advertisement 'In 2022, the Ministry of Finance even admitted the matter required 'further study,' deeply disappointing the people,' he said in a statement.
