Hindustan Times16-05-2025

Qualcomm has unveiled its new Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 mobile platform, designed to bring advanced features to a wider range of mid-tier smartphones. Built using TSMC's 4nm process, this chipset introduces enhanced AI functions, gaming improvements, and upgraded camera support. It also enables large language models (LLMs) and generative AI assistants to operate directly on devices without relying on cloud processing.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 features a prime CPU core running at 2.8GHz, which is supported by four performance cores clocked at 2.4GHz and three efficiency cores reaching up to 1.8GHz. This architecture promises a 27 percent boost in CPU speed compared to its predecessor. The integrated Adreno GPU delivers 30 percent faster graphics rendering, while AI performance sees a 65 percent increase, claims Qualcomm. Qualcomm's AI Engine powers these on-device capabilities.

Why Apple founder Steve Jobs believed teams should ‘argue' and ‘fight': ‘That's what it's…'

Apple founder Steve Jobs once said that building great teams requires friction – the one that leads to arguments and strong opinions, but resulting in better ideas and stronger people. In a 1995 interview with PBS's Triumph of the Nerds, Jobs recalled a story from his childhood when a neighbor showed him how a rock tumbler worked. He told interviewer Bob Cringely that a widower neighbor showed him a homemade tumbler consisting of 'a motor', 'coffee can' and a 'little band between them'. It was filled with "regular old ugly rocks," water and grit, Jobs told the interviewer, recalling that the stones emerged "amazingly beautiful" after a night of clattering. 'That's what it's like when you get a bunch of incredibly talented people working together,' Jobs said. ''They bump up against each other, they make some noise, they make some mistakes, they have arguments sometimes, they fight — but they polish each other,' he added. Jobs believed that real progress comes when people are forced to challenge each other, not just agree. At the time of the interview, he was running NeXT and was preparing to return to Apple. Former Apple employees, as per a Benzinga report, say Jobs often structured team spaces to encourage such interaction. Engineers and designers were placed close together so they had to confront issues head-on. Similar methods were used later in iPhone development and at Pixar, where open criticism in story sessions was part of the creative process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Steve Jobs' work habit shared by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter recently said that Steve Jobs would reportedly call colleagues at hours. Apple weighs Perplexity AI acquisition, eyes AI-powered search alternative: Report

Apple Inc. is reportedly weighing the possibility of acquiring artificial intelligence (AI) startup Perplexity AI, as the tech giant steps up efforts to enhance its generative AI capabilities and potentially reduce its reliance on Google for search services. According to sources familiar with the matter, Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has been engaged in preliminary discussions with services chief Eddy Cue and senior figures leading Apple's AI strategy, reported Bloomberg. While the deliberations possibly remain in their early stages and no formal offer has been tabled, the potential move reflects Apple's growing urgency to secure both advanced AI technology and top-tier talent. A deal with Perplexity could position Apple to develop its own AI-powered search engine, a strategic hedge as its lucrative, long-standing agreement with Google faces mounting scrutiny from US antitrust regulators. That partnership, which makes Google the default search engine on Apple devices, reportedly earns the iPhone maker an estimated $20 billion annually. However, its future remains uncertain pending the outcome of a major antitrust trial. As of now, Apple has not approached Perplexity's management directly regarding a takeover. Meanwhile, the AI firm stated it was unaware of any acquisition discussions. Apple, true to form, has declined to comment. Perplexity, valued at $14 billion following a recent funding round, offers real-time answers to user queries by drawing from current web data, positioning itself as a next-generation alternative to conventional search engines. Any deal approaching its valuation would mark the largest acquisition in Apple's history, surpassing its $3 billion purchase of Beats Electronics in 2014. The competition for AI talent is intensifying. Meta is also in advanced talks to recruit Daniel Gross, co-founder of Safe Superintelligence Inc. Apple, however, is attempting to lure Gross back into its fold. Gross previously sold his startup Cue to Apple in 2013, a move that played a key role in shaping Apple's early AI functionalities. His co-founder, Robby Walker, recently transitioned from leading Siri to spearheading an Apple initiative called 'Knowledge', which is focused on developing a ChatGPT rival using real-time internet data. Internally, Apple has held multiple technical discussions with Perplexity in recent months, evaluating its platform and capabilities. The company is also reportedly exploring the possibility of a strategic partnership instead of a full acquisition. One such option includes integrating Perplexity into Safari as a search engine alternative and embedding its features into Siri. Cue, who oversees Apple's services division, including iCloud and Apple TV+, previously acknowledged Perplexity's promise while testifying at the Google antitrust trial. 'We've been pretty impressed with what Perplexity has done,' he noted, adding that the future of internet search is increasingly being shaped by AI-driven solutions rather than traditional engines. What Is Perplexity And Why Does Apple Want To Buy This AI Company?

Perplexity is just another AI company but biggies like Apple and Meta are said to be looking for a deal to buy the firm. Perplexity is just another AI company that has built tools like AI assistant, search engine and even has a voice chatbot. But in the last few weeks, reports claim both Meta and Apple have considered buying this company to strengthen its AI tools. Apple's case for a full-fledged AI ecosystem is far more critical because of the Siri delays till 2026, and its overall AI tools failing to light up the market. So what is so special about Perplexity that you have these tech giants linked with and looking to buy this AI company? What Is Perplexity And What It Offers Perplexity is an AI company supported by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos and tech giant Nvidia. It has launched an AI-powered search engine, a voice assistant and even lets you generate AI videos using text prompts. Unlike traditional search engines, Perplexity delivers more conversational and informative responses while citing sources, a feature that enhances transparency. Users can type queries and receive concise, source-backed answers, along with suggestions for related topics. It is making tools that are similar to ChatGPT and Gemini which makes it ripe for a giant like Apple that continues to rely on external forces for its AI push in 2025. Why Does Apple Want To Buy? Apple has internally discussed buying Perplexity, as reported by Bloomberg recently. The company needs a big AI push to jumpstart its ambitions that are lagging for multiple reasons. Apple wants to build its AI service on user privacy which means the dataset to train the AI model is limited. iPhone users can trigger ChatGPT or Gemini to explore more features but that is done by sending the data to the external servers, and Apple does not vouch for the safety of that data. Perplexity is rumoured to be valued around $18-20 billion and buying this AI company opens up internal solutions for Apple and gives them more leeway to build a stronger and more effective Siri, possibly relying on the AI workforce that it acquires with the company. The talks have mostly gone internal among the senior decision makers at Apple but the loud noises around this deal suggests Apple or Meta (or someone else) could pull off buying this company to aid their own AI ambitions and future.
