Noida: Two young professionals out for a midnight spin on a Ducati Scrambler died after the bike broke through an iron guardrail and plunged into a seven-foot-deep pit dug for the construction of an underpass on the Taj Highway near Char Murti roundabout early Tuesday.
Cops said the rider was speeding and may have lost control of the bike. Sandbags placed beyond the safety rails could not break their fall.
Ankur Singh (28) had picked up his friend, Kashish (25), around 2.30 am from her flat in 14th Avenue society, about 2.4km from Gaur Chowk, minutes before the crash. They were likely headed to Singh's apartment in Panchsheel Green 2, also in Greater Noida West.
Police said they received a call in the early hours and rushed a team from Bisrakh to the spot.
"It appears the bike smashed into a safety railing of the underpass site and fell into the pit," a senior officer said.
It is likely that the two landed on construction materials and machinery left at the site and suffered severe injuries, the officer said. They were rushed to District Hospital in Sector 39, but died on the way.
"Both had died by the time they were brought to the hospital," District Hospital CMS Renu Aggarwal said.
Neither Ankur nor Kashish was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, police said. With no eyewitnesses at that hour, investigators are relying on CCTV footage and forensic examination of the crash site. The motorcycle, a premium model priced at Rs 9 lakh, was left largely undamaged, they said.
According to cops, both Singh and Kashish were employed with private companies. Till late Tuesday evening, cops could not reach Singh's family.
Kashish's family members were on their way to Noida from Allahabad.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and they are working to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the crash.
Greater Noida Authority additional CEO Prerna Singh told TOI that there are diversions and barricades in place around the Char Murti roundabout for the construction of the underpass. "It appears the bike was speeding. We have ordered immediate reinforcement of safety measures at the site, including the installation of reflective tapes, stronger barriers, and better lighting.
"A coordination meeting with the traffic police will be convened soon to ensure personnel are present at the site during night hours," she said.
The under-construction underpass at the Char Murti roundabout, also known as Gaur Chowk, is part of a major infrastructure project to ease traffic congestion in Greater Noida West. The 700-metre, six-lane underpass on the Taj Highway is designed to help commuters from Surajpur bypass the roundabout and directly connect to Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
While construction continues, traffic flow in the area has already been partially altered. Key sections of the carriageway have been blocked due to digging at the main intersection, forcing vehicles to take detours via service lanes and U-turns.
A time-based analytical report compiled by the UP Road Safety and Awareness Cell shows the state recorded more than 13,000 road accidents and nearly 7,700 deaths between Jan 1 and May 20 this year. In comparison, 46,052 road accidents were reported in 2024, which led to 24,118 fatalities and 34,665 people getting injured. Noida alone recorded 1,165 crashes last year, which left 462 dead and 966 injured.

Pharmacist fudges autopsy report
Representative Image BAREILLY: A pharmacist at a community health centre (CHC) in UP's Sambhal has been suspended for tampering with the autopsy report of a 17-year-old girl, who was allegedly hanged from the ceiling by her father and brother on May 27 as they did not approve of her relationship with a local man, reports Kanwardeep Singh. Pharmacist Madhur Arya, posted at CHC in Bahjoi of Sambhal district, took a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the alleged killers to mention the cause of death as "hanging", instead of "strangulation". The services of a contract worker, a computer operator, at the post-mortem house, Yash Sharma, have also been terminated for being an accomplice in the crime. The girl was found hanging in her house at Haimadpur village under Rajpura police station in Sambhal district. Investigation revealed that her father, Chandrakesh and brother Dharmendra first strangled her to death and then hung the body, police said. Not stopping at that, the accused attempted to frame four people, including the girl's lover, in the case to mislead police. SP Krishan Kumar Bishnoi said it was a case of "honour killing" and added that the girl's father, her brother, their relative Jai Prakash, along with the pharmacist and the computer operator have been arrested. Additional SP Anukriti Sharma said, "We are verifying the chat history of the pharmacist with the other staff, including the doctor in charge of the CHC. Necessary action will be taken after the probe." Chief medical officer Dr Tarun Pathak said on Friday, "Both the employees were sent to jail under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A departmental inquiry has been ordered against the pharmacist. Further action will be taken once the investigation report is received."

Amit Shah 1st to be told about cash at judge Varma's residence
Union home minister Amit Shah NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah was the first to be informed by Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora about "four or five half-burnt sacks" of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma's official residence within hours of its chance discovery following a fire on the night of March 14 at the bungalow's storeroom. Responding to a fire emergency call, firefighters and police reached Justice Varma's Tughlaq Crescent bungalow a little after 11.30pm on March 14. The first responders, who stumbled upon the bags stuffed with cash, shot videos of half-burnt currency notes of Rs 500 denomination around midnight. They left after dousing the fire around 1am on March 15. Delhi Police chief Arora first informed the home minister on March 15 and, later, briefed Delhi HC Chief Justice D K Upadhyay about the cash. Delhi Police chief Sanjay Arora also shared "certain still photographs and video" of the storeroom fire with the Delhi HC CJ, who in turn informed then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, triggering a chain of events which led to setting up of an inquiry into the sensational episode. The inquiry panel said in its report, "The information was shared by Arora with Justice D K Upadhyay in the late afternoon of March 15, who was out of station in Lucknow on account of Holi vacation, and he was informed that a report had been sent to the Union home minister, wherein there was reference that there were four or five half-burnt sacks of Indian currency at the spot." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรด Bitcoin และ Ethereum - ไม่ต้องใช้กระเป๋าเงิน! Uncles came home to meet 9-year-old's father and drank. Then they raped her
Noida: "I just sit in one place all day." Whether it's about herself, her family, her school, or how she spends her days, nine-year-old Manju (name changed) says little. When we met her on Friday morning, she was running a temperature and had to leave soon to record her statement before the Child Welfare Commission (CWC). If it was a rare morning when she had both her parents by her side, her vacant expression betrayed nothing, her hands firmly clasped. Do you have friends, we ask her. "No," comes the reply. Do you like chocolates? "No." How about ice cream? "No." Her manner began to change soon after school closed for summer vacations on May 15. Both parents were at hand but neither noticed the girl withdrawing into a shell. Every other afternoon, the house – a small servant's quarter of a bungalow of a township in central Noida – had guests. Three of them, her father's friends. They would sit with him and drink. Her father would drink the most, till he passed out. But the friends wouldn't leave when he did. They would, instead, walk up to her next. One day, a packet of chips, another day, chocolates. When they called her "Gudiya", it would make her freeze. The touch would make her recoil. For a month, the three men sexually assaulted her. She could not confide in her alcoholic, ill-tempered father. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Laxmi Ji Idol For Wealth, Peace & Happiness Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo Her mother was not available – busy with her other family, after she divorced and married again, though a court had ordered she would stay with her. The horrifying sexual exploitation the girl she went through would reveal itself when a doctor examined her on June 17 and asked some questions. She had fallen ill and had high fever. Her father had taken her to the district hospital in Sector 30. "When the doctor asked her if she was feeling any pain during the examination, she pointed to her chest and groin. When the doctor prodded a little further, the child revealed what happened. She said 'three uncles' had stripped and assaulted her repeatedly for nearly a month," a medical staffer at the hospital told TOI. During an examination that followed, no external injuries were found, sources said. "We informed her father and asked him to report the matter to the police," a hospital employee said. "But he began arguing with us. So, we called the police." Police took a statement from her father, and an FIR was filed on June 18. The three men identified by the girl, a security guard, a driver and a man who irons clothes, were arrested. On Friday, as Manju was produced before CWC, she was unable to give a statement. Dr KC Virmani, chairperson of CWC, told TOI, "The child was silent and is displaying signs of trauma. She has been sent to a childcare institute for the time being. She will stay there till it can be assessed that her family environment is safe for her. We have also ordered that her statement should be recorded at the magisterial court on Monday. We will be holding multiple sessions of counselling with the child to speak to her till she feels comfortable to share what happened to her. She will also be sent to a govt hospital for psycho-analysis in line with procedures for safety of children." One of police investigators in the case told TOI the girl's sudden illness was a blessing in disguise. "This case might not have come to light had she not fallen ill and the accused would have continued to exploit her," the officer said. Based on the father's complaint, a case under sections 137(2) (kidnapping) and 75 (sexual harassment) of BNS, along with relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act was registered at Sector 20 police station. After the medical exam, rape charges were added to the FIR. "Over the last month, the three accused took turns on different occasions and raped her," a police officer said.
