Almost 10 years ago, I fell victim to a terrible affliction. In desperation over the state of the world, I waded, first gingerly then frantically then pathologically, into the vast sea of my first and only hobby: watch collecting. Over the years, as the world continued to disintegrate, as Trump One morphed into Covid then into January 6th and finally into Trump Two, the hobby consumed me. Whenever my phone pinged with the latest disaster, I typed in www.hodinkee.com, the foremost site for watch nerds, and was instantly summoned into a private, strangely ordered world. Stone dials riveted me. Balance cocks made me dizzy. The art, the social history, the engineering — all of it made me forget the daily cataclysm around me, if only for a moment.
Watches kept me, as my therapist (also a watch collector) said, 'regulated.' I spent hours per day looking at them, talking about them, getting trashed on Old Fashioneds with fellow collectors at secret watch meetups and galas. One watch became 10 became 20, until finally I had amassed 31, a timepiece for every day of the month. I wrote a novel called Lake Success, which featured a watch collector as the main protagonist. I even traveled to a magical city most New Yorkers such as myself have only read about in books ­— Chicago — to lecture on watches at an event sponsored by the Swiss consulate. And yet, in some ways, I was no more than a horological debutante, for I had never attended the premier event of those consumed by my passion — the annual gathering in Geneva called Watches and Wonders. This needed to change.

Montreal's Canada Day parade cancelled for a second year in a row, organizer says

MONTREAL - Montreal has cancelled its once-annual Canada Day parade for the second time in as many years, event organizers announced this week. Chief organizer Nicolas Cowen announced the decision in a news release, citing a number of reasons for the cancellation including potential municipal worker job action, difficult relations with city departments and planning problems. It's the second consecutive year in which Montreal won't have a parade — an event that began in 1977. Thursday's announcement came less than two weeks before Canada Day. 'We understand this news is disappointing to many, especially the families, performers, volunteers, and attendees who look forward to this cherished tradition,' organizers said in a Facebook post. 'The parade has not only been a celebration of Canada but a proud reflection of Montreal's diversity, resilience, and community spirit.' Cowen blamed red tape and politics for the 2024 cancellation, citing issues in securing permits and funding and getting approval from government officials. When the event was last held in 2023, Cowen said he was forced to complete some sets of paperwork multiple times and find 148 last-minute volunteers to satisfy city rules. The event was also cancelled between 2020 and 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cowen said the parade has become increasingly difficult to organize without disruptions in recent years. According to organizers, the event draws 120,000 spectators. Cowen said he remains hopeful he can mend ties with the city and the parade can return. 'With its cancellation, not only does the city lose a major tourism draw, but Canadian culture itself takes a hit on one of the most important national holidays,' organizers said. A City of Montreal spokeswoman disputes the assertions, saying the organizer failed to submit a project proposal for the parade. 'As was the case last year, the promoter of the Canada Day parade, Nicholas Cowen, did not submit a project application to the City of Montreal, despite the city inviting him to do so on several occasions,' Nicky Cayer said in an email. Cayer says Canada on the Move, a brand new festival, did get a permit and the July 1 free event includes 13 totems — one for each province and territory — over a 1.2 kilometre route through historic Old Montreal. Heading into the June 24 primary for mayor, New Yorkers say their city is in trouble. In four recent surveys, majorities said that the quality of life was fair or poor, that they were afraid to ride the subway at night, that housing and child care were unaffordable, and that city government and the public schools were dysfunctional. Yet on a muggy evening in Manhattan's meatpacking district, that pessimism was nowhere to be found. A skateboard ramp the size of a dollar van had been erected on the cobblestone street outside an art gallery, and skateboarders showed off tricks as onlookers with tattoos, baggy pants and stylish scarves shouted encouragement. Inside the exhibition space, a very 'if you know, you know' collection of New Yorkers — graffiti artists, skaters, photographers, musicians — mingled, hugged and laughed in front of huge photographs of a deceased actor slash skateboard legend who was being honored. As the D.J. played a mix of old-school hip-hop and Brazilian lounge music, two bartenders mixed bespoke cocktails made from a small batch spirit splashed with a lime-and-yuzu soda. It certainly didn't feel like a scene from a city in crisis. New York, which was hit hard as the country's epicenter of the Covid pandemic, remains a beacon for people across the country and the world, a destination for immigrants, artists, entrepreneurs and business scions. Watchful outsiders and New Yorkers themselves anxiously question whether the city is 'back' from the troubles of recent years. And every New Yorker could have a different answer about what a comeback looks like — what the city should be, and what it is right now. 'From where I'm sitting, it looks pretty good,' said Lloyd Blankfein, who grew up in public housing in Brooklyn and went on to run Goldman Sachs until his retirement in 2018.
