Man claims trial to making offensive FB comments on Nurul Izzah

PETALING JAYA : A 48-year-old man claimed trial in the Sepang sessions court today to 11 charges of making offensive comments on Facebook against former MP Nurul Izzah Anwar earlier this year.
Ruslan Mat Ali, a father of three, pleaded not guilty before judge Ahmad Fuad Othman after the charges were read, Harian Metro reported.
In making his plea, he claimed he had dropped his handphone while fishing and had no idea how the Facebook comments were made.
He was accused of knowingly using his Facebook account to send offensive comments against Nurul Izzah with the intention of annoying others.
He was charged with committing the offences between Jan 2 and Feb 26.
The charges were framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act, punishable by a maximum RM50,000 fine, up to one year's imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab asked the court to fix bail at RM15,000. However, Ruslan, who was unrepresented, sought a lower bail amount, saying he had no income, was divorced, and had to look after three children.
The judge granted bail of RM10,000 and fixed July 18 for mention.
Ruslan failed to post bail and was placed under remand until the next court date.

LONDON, June 20 — American R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty in a UK court to a charge stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. The alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023 while Brown was touring in the UK. Other bail terms include that he should surrender his passport if he is not travelling. Securities Commission intensifies crackdown on scams, adds 59 to investor alert list in just the first quarter of 2025
KUANTAN, June 20 — The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) added 59 names to its Investor Alert List in the first quarter (1Q) of this year, said chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He said this move is part of ongoing efforts to combat the increasingly rampant scams, alongside blocking fraudulent websites and social media pages. 'In 2024, we added 273 names to the Alert List, and in the 1Q this year, we added another 59,' he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 programme. The event was officiated by Pahang Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. Mohammad Faiz added that the SC also collaborates closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block these deceptive sites. 'Last year, we blocked 153 websites and 261 social media pages. In the 1Q, we blocked 29 websites and 91 social media pages. These numbers show how much illicit activity we are fighting daily,' he said. As of May 2025, he said, the SC had received 1,218 complaints and enquiries about scams. Mohammad Faiz also reminded the public to be cautious of scams that claim to be Shariah compliant, using religious sentiment to gain trust. Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 is a three day programme starting today, bringing together government officials, capital market industry players, and regulators under one roof as part of the SC's investor outreach initiative. Johor Perhilitan captures male elephant that strayed into UTM land in Desaru
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has captured a wild male elephant on the grounds of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Sungai Cemaran in Desaru near here. Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the Johor Elephant Capture Unit carried out the task on Thursday (June 19) following efforts that began on Monday in Tanjung Sedili and surrounding areas. "The captured elephant was part of a main group of elephants which became separated from the herd, which a week earlier entered and ravaged coconut and fruit orchards at Desaru Fruit Farm," he said in a Facebook post on Friday (June 20).
