Marcos on P20/kilo of rice: I'm confident it's sustainable

GMA Network3 days ago

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed confidence anew that his administration could sustain the implementation of the P20 per kilo of rice.
In an episode of the BBM Podcast, Marcos was asked how will the government sustain this program. He then emphasized that rice production has slowly been increasing.
''Since our production is already going up, bababa ang cost of production. Since bababa ang cost of production, di ang pagbenta, kung bibili ang NFA, ang pagbenta ng NFA, pababa nang pababa,'' Marcos said.
(Since our production is already going up, the cost of production will decrease. Since the cost of the production will be lowered, then the selling of NFA will also be cheaper.)
''That's why I'm so confident masabi [na] sustainable,'' the President added.
Marcos said the government would continue to provide machinery to farmers and improve the irrigation system.
Marcos also assured the local farmers that even the price of rice would be cheaper, the buying price of palay will not be lowered.
''We have to support them so kahit ano pa ang mangyari sa presyo ng bigas na ipinagbibili sa mga palengke, hindi natin ibababa ang buying price ng NFA. Never bababa 'yan,'' he said.
(We have to support them so whatever happens with the price of rice being sold in markets, we will not lower the buying price of NFA.)
The President earlier explained why it took time for him to fulfill his campaign promise of P20 per kilo of rice, noting that the government needs to provide assistance first to the local farmers, including the provision of machinery.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) initially implemented the sale of rice at P20 per kilo in the Visayas region. According to the DA, Marcos wants it to be implemented across the country in the long run.
The second phase, which will commence in July, will be in the Mindanao region.
The P20 per kilogram rice initiative under the Kadiwa ng Pangulo program only allows members of vulnerable sectors—including indigents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents to buy NFA rice at P20 per kilogram.
Moreover, the government's P20 per kilogram subsidized rice can also be availed by minimum wage earners.
Marcos said at present, the DA is in partnership with local government units in selling the P20 per kilo of rice. However, he is eyeing that this will be shouldered by the national government next year.
''Eventually, I'm looking at a proposal na next year, wala ng contribution ang LGU. Ang contribution, lahat national government,'' Marcos said.

Marcos on influencing Sara Duterte impeachment: I choose not to

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has said it is his decision not to influence the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, insisting that the matter is in the hands of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Marcos made the remark in an episode of the BBM Podcast on Saturday, when he was asked about views that the President has a say in the decision of the impeachment court even with separation of powers between branches of government. "If a president chooses to do that, I choose not to," Marcos said. Duterte has brushed off Marcos' pronouncements that he was not in favor of her impeachment, as their feud continued to simmer with lawmakers pressing forward with House investigations and endorsing the impeachment complaint to the Senate. Advocacy groups, meanwhile, have called out Marcos for conveying a supposed lack of urgency to make Duterte accountable. Marcos has said the impeachment will take Congress' attention away from passing important pieces of legislation. Speaking on the podcast, Marcos reiterated that he has been preoccupied with lowering retail prices of rice and improving public transportation, among other initiatives of his administration. The Chief Executive stood pat that the impeachment process lies with the legislative branch. "That's not my, I'm busy with the transport, with the rice, all of the different things that we are doing, that, that nauubos ang oras ko doon. Put it bluntly. Wala naman akong papel doon sa impeachment eh," the President said. (That's not my, I'm busy with the transport, with the rice, all of the different things that we are doing. My time is devoted to these things. I have no role in the impeachment.) Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero has denied that Marcos was behind the delay in the presentation of the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate. Relations between Marcos and Duterte, running mates in Eleksyon 2022, have turned frosty following House probes into the drug war under the administration of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, as well as the handling of confidential funds by offices under her leadership. Last Thursday, House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said the Vice President will not be attending Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28. Malacañang has said it is her choice if she prefers not to attend the event. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

21 PH gov't officials stranded in Israel arrive in PH

The 21 Filipino government officials who got stranded in Israel amid tensions with Iran arrived in Manila on Saturday morning. The officials — 17 local government officials who attended an agricultural technology training and four dairy industry specialists of the Department of Agriculture — were met at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 by Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla. Of the 17 officials, two were congressmen, nine mayors, four vice mayors, and two regional directors. It was an emotional homecoming for the stranded officials, as seen in a video taken by GMA Integrated News reporter Bea Pinlac. Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss earlier said the 21 Filipinos were attended to by the Israeli government. "All of them have been taken care of by the Israeli government, and we are also looking for ways to send them back to the Philippines. This is our responsibility and our commitment… I can tell you that they are getting fed, lodging, and whatever they need. We are catering for, and I know that they are doing fine. Of course, it's not a pleasant situation,' Fluss said. Agriculture Secretary Francisco "Kiko" Tiu Laurel Jr. earlier said the stranded Filipinos were fearful as their hotels were bombed. The officials took a land trip to Jordan, then went to Dubai for the flight back to Manila. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: PH partnering with Japan for waste-to-energy project

Pres. Marcos said the Philippines is working with Kanadevia Corporation in Osaka, Japan for a waste-to-energy project in Manila. (Photo from PCO) President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Friday met with executives of the Kanadevia Corporation in Osaka, Japan for a waste-to-energy project in Manila. ''Masaya akong ibalita na katuwang natin ang Kanadevia Corporation ng Japan sa isang makasaysayang Waste-to-Energy project para sa Maynila,'' Marcos, who is in Japan for a working visit, said in a social media post. (I'm happy to report that we are working with Kanadevia Corporation in Japan for a historic Waste-to-Energy project in Manila.) ''Sa proyektong ito, libo-libong tonelada ng basura ang gagawing malinis na enerhiya at makatutulong ito na mabawasan ang pagbaha, magbigay ng trabaho, at linisin ang ating mga komunidad,'' he added. (In this project, tons of waste will be transformed to energy to help in addressing floods, providing jobs, and cleaning our communities.) During the meeting, Kanadevia Corporation's investment plan for the Manila Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Project was tackled. The project will be done in partnership with the Phil. Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco), a major player in the design, construction, and operation of integrated sanitary solid waste management and disposal facilities in the Philippines. Kanadevia Corporation specializes in environmental systems, including advanced WtE facilities, desalination plants and water treatment technologies. The said firm was the Japanese proponent, co-investor and technology provider in the Manila WtE Project. Further, Marcos also had a meeting with the executives of Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., ranked as among the world's top shipbuilders. The company has been a key player in the international maritime industry since 1917, accounting for a significant share of the global market for medium-sized bulk carriers. It is embarking on its fifth phase of expansion in its shipyard in Balamban, Cebu by investing in new capital equipment and enhancing research and development capabilities. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
