SGPC relocates holy saroops of Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab's Gurdaspur
Amid heightening tension between India and Pakistan, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday started shifting holy saroops of Guru Granth Sahib from gurdwaras near the border areas of Dera Baba Nanak and Galarhi in Punjab's border district of Gurdaspur to the historic Gurdwara Sri Tahli Sahib in a safer location.
Satnam Singh, the manager of Sri Darbar Sahib gurdwara at Dera Baba Nanak, said, 'We have initiated the process on the request of the sangat (Sikh community) of the border villages that are not safe amid the ongoing conflict. We are in the process of respectfully shifting the saroop from our gurdwara near the Kartarpur Corridor. A team of SGPC sewadars (volunteers) took the saroop with maryada (Sikh tenets).'
Hours after India launched missile strikes under Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the home ministry ordered the closure of the 4-km Kartarpur Corridor at Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district on May 7 till further orders. The corridor connects the Dera Baba Nanak shrine to the Darbar Sahib gurdwara at Kartarpur in Narowal district Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh said the decision to relocate the saroops is a precautionary measure the committee has taken while opening gurdwaras in border areas to accommodate and feed local residents.
As the tension escalated two days ago, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami directed managers of gurdwaras in the border areas to make arrangements for the accommodation and langar (community meals) for people.
The managers of a dozen-odd gurdwaras in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran have been alerted to ensure accommodation and langar facilities for border residents.

Shashi Tharoor Calls PM Modi "Prime Asset For India" In New Provocation For Congress
New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor - who led the ruling BJP's anti-terrorism diplomatic outreach to the United States, Brazil, and three other nations last month, after Operation Sindoor - has called for more support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "energy, dynamism and willingness to engage (with other countries)" and labelled it "a prime asset for India on the global stage". In an article published by The Hindu (paywalled) Monday morning, Mr Tharoor said the outreach - seven cross-party MP delegations visited 32 countries, including the US, the European Union and member nations, Saudi Arabia, and Russia - was "a moment of national resolve and effective communication (and) affirmed that India, when united, can project its voice with clarity and conviction..." He said the delegations explained the "calibrated and measured" nature of India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, underscored Pakistan's continued links to terrorism. He specifically referenced the crossover of Indian and Pak delegations in the US and said, "Even as a Pakistani delegation was simultaneously present, we found US representatives... echoing our concerns and urging decisive action against terror groups... our arguments, grounded in facts and consistent advocacy, were reinforcing the legitimacy of India's position." "We consistently highlighted the severity of the threat from across our borders, aiming to build global consensus to hold perpetrators accountable," he wrote, calling the outreach a success. Mr Tharoor was one a dozen opposition leaders who were part of these delegations; the list included high-profile figures like Mr Tharoor and others from the Congress, as well as AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Priyanka Chaturvedi, the DMK's Kanimozhi. The Thiruvananthapuram MP's selection increased friction between himself and his party; the two already have a frosty relationship over several issues, including continuing positive words for the PM. That friction has led to talk of a blockbuster political switch, i.e., the four-time Lok Sabha MP, who was also a former top United Nations official and a former External Affairs Minister, was preparing to jump from the Congress to Mr Modi's side. In fact, after news of his appointment to lead the US-bound delegation, arguably the most important of the seven, sections of the Congress called him a 'super spokesperson' for the BJP's 'publicity stunts' and accused of flattering Prime Minister Modi. However, Mr Tharoor has repeatedly dismissed talk of a switch, insisting he could not swap the Congress for the BJP. Speaking to NDTV last week he again played down any friction with the party, calling such incidents "differences of opinion... with only some elements of leadership". When NDTV asked him how he would define his relationship with the Congress today, Mr Tharoor pointed out he had been loyal to the party and its ideology for the last 16 years.

Shashi Tharoor calls for 'greater backing' of PM Modi's energy, dynamism: ‘Prime asset'
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has heaped big praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling his energy and dynamism an asset for India. His remarks came days after the Operation Sindoor delegations, one of which Tharoor led, came back after representing India overseas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greets Congress MP Shashi Tharoor as he meets members of the seven multi-party delegations at his residence in Delhi on Tuesday. (PTI)(HT_PRINT) In a news article with an English daily, Tharoor wrote at length about his takeaways from leading such a delegation, representing India's stance against terrorism. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage, but deserves greater backing," he wrote in The Hindu article. Tharoor, who led the Indian delegation to the United States, Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil, termed Operation Sindoor "a moment of national resolve". He also emphasised the value of unity as a nation and of public diplomacy. He also highlighted his engagement in the Washington DC and said that US officials recognised India's concerns, even in the presence of Pakistani representatives. "Even as a Pakistani delegation was simultaneously present, we found US representatives, including those who met the Pakistani officials, echoing our concerns and urging decisive action against terror groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed," Tharoor wrote. As part of the Operation Sindoor outreach, members cutting across party lines travelled to 32 countries to put forth India's resolve to tackle terrorism amid tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Shashi Tharoor had drawn criticism from Congress after being chosen to lead the Operation Sindoor delegation, as he was not among the names formally recommended by the party to be included in the delegations. 'BJP's super spokesperson' After Tharoor praised the 2015 Uri strike during his Panama leg and said that India never crossed the Line of Control before that, Congress leader Udit Raj termed him "BJP's super spokesperson", further escalating Congress's internal rift. "My dear Shashi Tharoor, Alas! I could prevail upon PM Modi to declare you as super spokesperson of BJP, even declaring (you) as foreign minister before landing in India. How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi, India never crossed LoC and International border." This post by Udit Raj was also reshared by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on X. Reacting to the controversy, Shashi Tharoor had said he cannot dwell on the criticism. "'Undoubtedly, in a thriving democracy, there are bound to be comments, criticisms. But I think at this point, we can't afford to dwell on it, when we get back to India, no doubt we have a chance to speak to our colleagues, critics, and media there," Tharoor had said.

Defence Stocks Fire Up On Escalating West Asia Tensions; Paras Defence, BEL Gain Up To 5%
Last Updated: Defence Stocks Rally: Shares of defence companies surged on June 23 after the US launched strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities Defence Stocks Rally: Shares of defence companies surged on June 23 after the US launched strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, heightening tensions in the Middle East and fuelling expectations of increased defence spending globally. The Nifty Defence index rose nearly 1.7% to hover around 9,037 in morning trade. Zen Technologies and Paras Defence were the top performers, rising up to 5% and trading at around Rs 1,995 and Rs 1,718, respectively. Zen Tech was locked in its upper circuit. Other notable gainers included Astra Microwave, Bharat Electronics (BEL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders (GRSE), and Data Patterns — each gaining over 2%. Mazagon Dock rose nearly 2%, while Cochin Shipyard and DCX India added over 1.5% each. BEL also emerged as the top gainer on the Sensex. Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Bharat Dynamics (BDL), and BEML traded with modest gains, while Solar Industries bucked the trend with marginal losses. Meanwhile, drone-tech firm IdeaForge hit the upper circuit with a 10% rally to Rs 631.05. The rally came after former US President Donald Trump announced a successful strike on three of Iran's main nuclear enrichment sites. In a televised address, Trump claimed the facilities had been 'completely obliterated" using bunker-buster bombs and Tomahawk missiles, while also warning Iran of further action if a peace deal is not reached. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the move, calling it a 'bold decision" to deny nuclear weapons to a dangerous regime. Though US officials clarified that Washington is not at war with Tehran, the heightened rhetoric added to global market volatility. Indian defence stocks have already been in focus in recent months. In May, India carried out cross-border strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' against terror outfits in Pakistan, boosting investor interest in the sector. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has further supported sentiment toward defence plays. However, analysts remain divided. While some expect strong order inflows to continue, others caution that current valuations in the sector may be running ahead of fundamentals. 'Defence stocks have been highly volatile lately, rallying strongly after Operation Sindoor, then seeing profit booking, and now rising again amid Middle East tensions. This reflects a mix of short-term momentum and long-term optimism. Geopolitical risks and a stronger push for domestic defence manufacturing have boosted investor confidence. With India's defence spending at just 1.9% of GDP, there's significant room for long-term growth," said Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking. 'However, the sharp rally has brought valuation concerns, making near-term volatility likely. Investors should remain selective, focusing on companies with robust order books, sound financials, and strong execution. While the momentum may fluctuate, the long-term outlook for India's defence sector remains structurally attractive in an increasingly uncertain global landscape," he added. Sankhanath Bandyopadhyay, Economist at Infomerics Valuation and Ratings, meanwhile, said, 'Defence stocks look promising due to the ongoing geopolitical tussle between Iran and Israel. Moreover, the Indian government is likely to enhance defence spending from the current ~2 per cent of GDP to 3–4 per cent over the next decade. Further, the government has targeted Rs 25,000 crore in defence exports by 2025–26." He added, 'Investors can focus on export-driven defence stocks with long-term potential. In the current scenario, geopolitical tensions will likely be lingering between different countries, especially as being reflected in rising tensions in the Middle East. Investors should carefully assess the financials and outlook of such stocks before investing, and there should be a judicious mix so that a healthy dividend can also be earned."
