Youth Demand supporters detained after disrupting Israeli Eurovision performance

Two protestors from the pro-Palestinian group Youth Demand were detained after disrupting the Israeli final performance at Eurovision. On May 17, activists David Currey, 22, and Meaghan Leon , 27, were forcibly removed from St. Jakobshalle arean in Basel, Switzerland after attempting to rush the stage while Israel's Yuval Raphael performed New Day Will Rise.
As Yuval Raphael thanked viewers, UK commentator Graham Norton told viewers: "I'm not sure what you're hearing at home, but it was a mixed response [from the crowd]." Confirming the disruption, a spokesperson for Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR which organised the event said: 'At the end of the Israeli performance a man and a woman tried to get over a barrier onto the stage.
"They were stopped. One of the two agitators threw paint and a crew member was hit.' The Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR also added: 'The crew member is fine and nobody was injured. The man and the woman were taken out of the venue and handed over to the police.'
A spokesperson for Basel police shared: 'The organiser handed the two people over to the police. The police checked the two people and then released them. It is now up to the organiser to decide whether to press charges.'
Following the demonstrations, Youth Demand shared videos from David and Meaghan recorded prior to the performance and following their release by Basel police. The first video, shared on Youth Demand's Instagram account shows David being restrained by security during Yuval's performance as he shouts 'Free Palestine'.
Alongside the clips from the demonstration is a message from David, reportedly recorded prior to the event. 'Tomorrow I'm gonna attempt to disrupt the Israeli performance at Eurovision with Youth Demand,' says David.
In the video, David condemns the Israeli state which he says is 'actively armed by our UK government and others across Europe' and the fact they are being presented on a global stage. 'Here we are having a party with them on the biggest stage of them all'.
David shares concerns about the planned disruption at the live venue in his message. 'I'm absolutely terrified to take this action tomorrow' but continues,'I'm left with very little choice other than to escalate my actions.'
The activist group shared a video message from David and Meaghan following their arrest. Meaghan says she's been 'anxious for weeks' in the lead up to the direct action at Eurovision.
David shares as well that before the Yuval's performance, extra security was dispersed which affected their initial plans. Still, they managed to hop the barricade but were then faced with 'pretty grim aggression' from security at the event, Eurovision staff and later on by police. Video from the demonstration shows David's mouth being covered by guards and his hair being pulled.
Youth Demand has called on the UK government to impose a total trade embargo on Israel. It says that it will continue to practice nonviolent resistance until this demand is met.
Prior to Yuval's performance, pro-Palestinian protests took place near a free concert in the centre of Basel against Israel's inclusion in the contest. Protesters clashed with police shortly before Yuval took to the stage.
Yuval finished second to Austrian singer JJ in the competition's final, after winning the public vote. She is one of the survivors of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen at the Nova music festival, which killed hundreds of people.

If no candidate surpasses 50% in the first round of voting, the candidate who's last is eliminated and their votes are redistributed. That could, in theory, favor candidates that have not until now featured strongly in the polls, including comptroller Brad Lander, who was last week detained by Ice agents, or Adrienne Adams, the city council speaker, or Scott Stringer, the former comptroller. But the mayoral primary does not include Eric Adams, the current Democratic mayor who has decided to run in November's election as an independent after becoming embroiled in a fundraising scandal. Cuomo, too, is still tarred by the sexual harassment claims that forced him to resign as governor in 2021. The down-ticket race also features another New Yorker, or 'boomerang candidate', with a clouded reputation. Anthony Weiner, subject of multiple sexting scandals, is running for the city council. Cuomo has led the polls until now, but Mamdani has surged in recent weeks, setting up a contest between a centrist and a progressive that may, or may not, indicate the direction of travel for Democrats nationally. Liam Byrne, 24, died in a fatal crash on the Gitschen mountain in Switzerland, after taking off from 7,874ft (2,400 metres), the BBC reported. In November, Mr Byrne featured in a BBC documentary, The Boy Who Can Fly, about his journey to becoming a champion skydiver. His parents, Mike and Gillian, confirmed to BBC Scotland News that their son had died, and paid tribute to his 'wild energy' and 'contagious laugh'. ‌ The Byrne family said: 'We would like to remember Liam not just for the way he left this world, but for how he lived in it. ‌ 'Liam was fearless, not necessarily because he wasn't afraid but because he refused to let fear hold him back. He chased life in a way that most of us only dream of and he soared. 'Skydiving and base jumping was more than just a thrill for Liam – it was freedom. It was where he felt most alive. Netflix series could be saved six years on from axing

A legendary Netflix series could be saved as the lead star gave a promising update about a streaming comeback after meeting with the director - a full six years on from its controversial axing Psychological crime thriller Mindhunter hit the streaming service back in 2017 and went on to air 19 episodes across two seasons, before wrapping up in 2019. 'In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters,' the Netflix synopsis reads. The popular programme, created by Joe Penhall, stars the likes of Jonathan Groff, 40, Holt McCallany, 61, Anna Torv, 46, and Hannah Gross, 34. In a recent chat with CBR , Holt - who played Bill Tench in the series - has teased that it could indeed be making a return. He said: 'So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. 'I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.' He added: 'And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. 'So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. 'And, you know, that's a big question mark.' It comes after Netflix fans were left furious back in April after it was claimed that Mindhunter wouldn't see another season because 'it's too expensive'. In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche back in 2023, David previously asserted that there wouldn't be another season of the beloved show. He said: 'I'm very proud of the first two seasons. 'But it's a particularly expensive show, and in Netflix's eyes, we didn't attract a large enough audience to justify such an investment. 'I don't blame them; they took risks to launch the series, gave me the means to do what I dreamed of with Mank, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. 'It's a chance to be able to work with people capable of daring. 'The day our desires are no longer the same, we will have to be honest about parting ways.' David's quote resurfaced on X recently and left some fans disappointed by the news. One commented: 'Y'all filmed in two rooms and a parking lot, where did the budget go.' 'One of the best series.'
