Find Me
In a child refugee's orphaned eyes, find me.
In the daily promise of sunrise, find me.
Soldiers rescue an old woman, a bag of bones
trapped in rubble, calling out to the skies: Find me.
Women and children disappear without a trace.
In their helpless, anguished cries, find me.
Surveying the desolation of ruined lives
in forsaken cities of grief the wind sighs, find me.
In voices rising from shallow graves, souls cry,
emerging like a flutter of butterflies, find me.
Unheard, unrepresented, they survive like seeds
praying in cracks of abandoned high-rise, find me.
In stories buried in the bones of exiles,
forgotten in the annals of history's lies, find me.
The rhythms of grief and the rhythms of hope coexist in many of the poems in Shanta Acharya's new collection, Dear Life. In Find Me, they alternate in the quick gasps and strings of melody carried by the movement from couplet to couplet, in the pauses created by punctuation and line-ending, and in the embedded gems of the rhyme-scheme ('sunrise'//'skies'//'cries'// 'sighs'// 'butterflies'// 'high-rise'// 'lies').
The many 'forsaken cities of grief' the poem inhabits belong both to present and historical time. Shifts of perspective in the scenes we're shown mirror processes of devastation and tentative renewal. In the first stanza, we begin by looking down into 'a child refugee's orphaned eyes', then focus upwards and outwards to 'the daily promise of sunrise'. The 'voices' in stanza five are 'rising from shallow graves' and, between the penultimate stanza and the last, our gaze travels down from the 'cracks of abandoned high-rise', where seed-like souls cling to survival, towards 'the bones of exiles' where hidden stories are still to be found.
Stanza one establishes the emotional movement between low and high, grief and hope, and the contrast essential to the repetition-centred vitality of Acharya's chosen form, the ghazal. A mystery too begins to be felt – the identity of the voice that utters the radif – 'find me'. In the first line it emanates from the unspeaking, desolate gaze of the parentless child. In the second, however, the speaker may be invisible, or hidden in the elliptical sentence structure. 'In the daily promise of sunrise, find me.'
In stanza two there's clearly a specific voice: the italicised plea, 'Find me', is that of the gaunt old woman who, as 'a bag of bones' is herself beginning to resemble the rubble in which she has long been trapped. The phrase 'bag of bones' is a colloquial, familiar one, but it's a visually effective choice here. The starving woman is rescued by soldiers: less fortunate are the 'women and children' who 'disappear without a trace'. It seems their cries are returning with their un-reclaimable bodies to sand or soil. A focus on female protagonists here might suggest a feminist emphasis in the poem, but the breadth of compassion infusing the poems of Dear Life suggests that the 'women and children' and 'old woman' in Find Me are figures that merge in a form of synecdoche, embracing all innocent victims of disaster, war and exile.
Stanza four becomes a small, unpeopled tone poem, in which only the wind speaks. In the fifth, souls take on their traditional form, freshly enlivened as 'a flutter of butterflies'. The winged 'seeds' give them a biological force beyond the mythical. From seeds, the poem turns to 'stories' – which, like poems, contain the power to unfurl and reveal identities, even if the 'bones of exiles' are seemingly 'forgotten in the annals of history's lies'. The bones themselves refuse their silence in this powerful, defiant conclusion.
The ghazal is traditionally a love poem, and one of the form's requirements is the final disclosure of the writer-lover's identity. Acharya rejects the convention and sustains the mystery she has so enticingly created. I am happy simply to hear the voice, a haunting insistent voice, changing its identity as the poem unfolds. At the same time, my imagination is drawn in the direction of the book's guiding principle, the intense conviction of life's 'dearness' and fundamental value. Acharya's religion, influenced by Hinduism, is not one of dogma, nor even continuous certainty, but I feel we are close to hearing it speak in Find Me, with a voice demanding expression through enacted love. It asks to be found in all the stanzas of this poem, and throughout the pages of the collection.

The kindness of strangers: a gentle flight attendant made me feel I wasn't alone
I'd completely forgotten it was my little sister's 40th birthday, so that morning I hurriedly arranged to send some flowers to her house. She died before she could receive them. My sister died at 11am and I got a text from the florist saying they'd delivered the flowers at 11.30am – how ridiculous. They must have sat on her doorstep for days. I got the call as I was walking through the doors at Emerald airport in Queensland, about to fly home to Brisbane. My stepdad rang me and said, 'I need to talk to you about something – your sister's died.' I was like, 'What? What do you mean?' I told him I was about to hop on a plane home and that I'd call him when I got on the ground. I hung up, stunned. I kind of held it together until we had to walk out to the airstrip, when I realised I was walking towards my sister's death. It was horrible. I sat down on the plane, sobbing. One of the flight attendants knelt down next to me and asked if there was anything he could do to help. I said, 'My sister has just died, I don't think anyone can help.' He just held my hand and said, 'We'll get you back to Brisbane.' He didn't try to tell me everything will be all right, because it clearly wouldn't have been. Just, 'We'll get you back to Brisbane.' Throughout the flight he brought my water, checked in on me and helped me get off the plane quickly when we landed. One might say that's his job. But it wasn't, actually. It was so above and beyond what he needed to do as cabin crew, especially on a short flight where everyone's just trying to get it over and done with. He was really gentle, kind and sweet. If he hadn't been there I would have just sat there sobbing on my own – certainly the person sitting next to me didn't engage at all, not that I blame them for that. The flight attendant made me feel as though I wasn't alone on that plane. When I think about my sister now, I think of him. From Gaza to Parramatta: students fleeing global conflicts follow pathway to Australian university
Weeks after 7 October 2023, Hala Alsammak stood at the site of her once bustling university in Gaza. Al-Azhar university had been reduced to rubble. Alsammak had begun studying there after graduating from the Holy Family School in 2022, where her father had taught biology for more than two decades. After the Hamas attack on Israel, and the Israeli invasion of Gaza, the school became a place of shelter for hundreds of displaced people. Then, in July last year, it was bombed, killing four. 'When the war came, everything stopped,' Alsammak says. She says in previous conflicts, Israel didn't target them. 'But from the first week [after 7 October], they started bombing all the public facilities,' she says. Two years on, she's found herself reconnecting with former high school classmates in a place they had never expected to visit: Sydney. Western Sydney University (WSU) established a program for people fleeing conflict last year in response to global conflict in Palestine, Lebanon and Ukraine. Now 20, Alsammak didn't even know her friends Tala Hakoura, 20, and Hala Idrees, 18, were living in Australia until they found themselves in the same English class at WSU. 'I said 'Hala, what are you doing here!'' Hakoura – who was taught by Alsammak's father back in Gaza – laughs. The trio are among 35 Palestinian refugees who have joined the program, which offers a direct pathway to undergraduate degrees. A number of Australian universities including Flinders, the Australian Catholic University and Queensland University have established scholarships or doubled their efforts to support refugees following the war in Gaza. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory estimated earlier this month that more than 90% of the school and university buildings in Gaza have been destroyed and more than 658,000 children in Gaza have had no schooling for 20 months. A few months after the conflict began, Alsammak was among those required to evacuate. 'For us, and all the wars before us, my dad would say, 'we want to die together and in our home, to die in the same place together',' Alsammak says. 'The decision to evacuate our home was the most difficult decision in our whole lives. 'We didn't take anything, we were thinking we will come back, and two weeks after that, [the Israel Defense Forces] destroyed the whole area … and when you leave, you aren't able to go and look back.' Alsammak arrived in Australia with her parents and sisters a year ago, after seven months in limbo in Egypt. 'We didn't know anything,' she says. We didn't know the shops around us, the transport, we had to figure it all out alone. Then every time I went to universities [in Australia] they told me 'no, we can't help you'.' She says the call to WSU was her 'last chance'. Alsammak and her peers will complete their English course next week, paving the way to begin undergraduate degrees in July. It's been a particularly hard road for Idrees, whose year 12 studies were cut short by the war. She somehow managed to complete her education online from the West Bank after her school was bombed. After arriving in Australia six months ago, she was referred to the WSU program on a community WhatsApp group, and encouraged by her family to apply. It's a similar story for Hakoura, who has been in Australia for a year without her mother and 17-year-old sister, who remain in Gaza. She says two years without studying has fractured her ability to focus. So, too, has watching and waiting for the war to end. 'Even now, I find it hard to study for an hour,' she says. 'But I promised my mum and sister – 'I'll make you proud of me, and I will study my best to get high marks'.' The vice-chancellor of WSU, Prof George Williams, says for many of his students, the war in Gaza is very personal. There have been pro-Palestine protests at the campus, like others that have spread across Australia's universities. 'There's been very high levels of distress, many have lost family members and loved ones,' Williams says. 'We felt we had to do more. The local community was telling us 'what can you do?', and we responded … because you have to give people hope and a sense you can make a difference. 'You can't change geopolitics but you can give people an education.' WSU educates 170 different ethnic groups. Two in three of its students are the first in their family to go to university, and half speaka language other than English at home. On Wednesday, WSU ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education community impact rankings, which measures social and global impact – including addressing inequity – for the fourth year running. Next semester, Idrees wants to study medical science and eventually become a doctor. Hakoura is considering business or occupational therapy. Alsammak wants to do music therapy or psychology, after her experience working with children caught up in the conflict in Gaza. 'For me, I always come back and tell myself, Hala, if anyone came to you [before the war] and said 'you will be in Australia in two years' I wouldn't believe that,' she says. 'No, everything can be possible in this life.'
