Britain's Lando Norris wins Monaco F1 race

May 25 (UPI) -- Englishman Lando Norris won the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position Sunday, and narrowed the gap for the drivers' championship series to three points.
"Monaco, baby, yeah baby!" Norris radioed to this pit crew after crossing the finish line.
Norris is battling for the F1 drivers' championship with his McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri, who leads in the points standings 161 to 158.
The race came down to the wire as Ferrari driver and local favorite Charles LeClerc closed the gap, but lost out to Norris.
Current world champion Max Verstappen finished in fourth place in Monaco Sunday. The series moves to Spain next Sunday.

He did not want to be a token producer, but rather to make the movie as true to the sport as possible. One of the movie producers, Jerry Bruckheimer, detailed the extensive scrutiny Hamilton provided and what he advocated for in the name of realism. "Lewis Hamilton saw a part of it and gave us a critique of how the drivers actually do various things," Bruckheimer said. "The level of specifics that he gave us, like in Silverstone in Turn 3 you're in second gear, and he could hear with his ear we [Pitt] were in third gear. "So it's that kind of thing that he's bringing to the movie. "And he said... when he finishes a race, especially like Singapore, where it's very hot, he can barely get out of the car, they lose 10 pounds... and it's not only him, it's all of them. "They're just completely exhausted [and] we're going to show what it takes to be an F1 driver." The filmmakers made several different decisions to enhance the realism, including using real racing cars, filming the movie at real tracks, and capturing real F1 teams for the background. All these elements further connect the movie to the real-life sport. While the film is better off with all the realism, the production costs went up as a result. "Everything that he has brought to this movie, I can't even express our thanks to him and all the folks from F1 who made this all possible," Bruckheimer added. "But the authenticity that he brings, we can't imagine what goes into what a driver does, and what the sport brings to an audience. "Sometimes we don't like to hear some of the things he says, because it costs us more money to fix things, but we're all in, we want to make it great, and he's certainly helping us." "F1" hits the big screen on June 27. Apple Films produced the movie, and Joseph Kosinski - of "Top Gun" fame - directed it.

Harry Brook holds England together to trail India by 144 runs at Headingley
Associated Press LEEDS, England (AP) — Harry Brook held England's reply together as India took two wickets on the third morning Sunday of the test series opener at Headingley. Brook was taking the attack to India with 57 not out, and using up lives, as England reached 327-5 at lunch, 144 runs behind India. England scored 118 runs in the session. India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah finally got support from his fellow bowlers as Prasidh Krishna bagged Ollie Pope on 106 and Mohammed Siraj claimed Ben Stokes on 20. Both were nicked off. Bumrah, who took the three England wickets on Saturday but should have had a five-for, had no luck on Sunday, but Brook also had a say. The batter, playing on his home ground, went after all of India's bowlers successfully for his 20th fifty-plus test score in his 42nd inning. He had seven boundaries and, in the day's first over, slogged Krishna for six over deep midwicket. Then Brook came down the track at Bumrah to bash him through the covers. Brook drove Krishna on the up for another four then charged at Siraj. Siraj adjusted but Brook still lifted the ball over the slips cordon to the deep third boundary. Ravindra Jadeja's spin troubled Brook the most but he pulled him to the square leg boundary with one bounce. Jadeja was getting the ball to fizz so well that Rishabh Pant dropped a tough chance at the stumps when Brook gave an outside edge on 46. That was Brook's second life. Bumrah got him caught in Saturday's last over but overstepped. After Pope was out early, adding only six runs to his overnight 100, Brook's assertiveness allowed Stokes to settle. Stokes lasted nearly an hour until he feathered Siraj behind. Jamie Smith, 29 not out, joined Brooks and their partnership by lunch was an unbeaten 51. David ‘Syd' Lawrence, England's first British-born Black cricketer, has died at 61
GLOUCESTER, England (AP) — David 'Syd' Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to play for England, has died. He was 61. Lawrence's family made the announcement on Sunday with a statement through Gloucestershire, where Lawrence was the club president. He announced a year ago he had motor neurone disease. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease,' the family said. ''Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed. 'A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was.' He played five tests for England from 1988-92, taking 18 wickets. His international career prematurely ended at 28 when he broke his knee cap after falling awkwardly when running in to bowl against New Zealand on the final day of a test in Wellington. A strapping fast bowler who was renowned for being one of the quickest on the English county circuit, Lawrence was beginning to establish himself in tests and a five-for against the West Indies in 1991 helped England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Viv Richards among his haul. Lawrence also played a sole one-day international against the West Indies at Lord's in 1991, taking 4-67. For Gloucestershire, he grabbed 625 wickets in 280 matches. The England and India teams gave Lawrence a moment's silence on Sunday in Leeds before the third day's play in the first test. Lawrence became a competitive bodybuilder following his retirement and he was also a nightclub owner in Bristol. After he detailed his experiences of racism during his playing career, Gloucestershire issued an unreserved apology in September 2021, and six months later he became the county's first Black president. Only last week, Lawrence received an MBE in King Charles III's birthday honors for outstanding services to cricket. At the time, he said, 'As a proud Gloucester man who achieved his dream to play for England on the cricket field, it means a great deal to me and to my family who have supported me with all their love during some difficult times. I have always put my heart and soul into any challenge I have faced and that is how I have approached things since my diagnosis with motor neurone disease.' He was fundraising to fight MND as recently as Friday, when Gloucestershire honored him during a Twenty20 game. Lawrence was also recently named an honorary life vice president of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and chair Richard Thompson paid tribute. 'David 'Syd' Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion,' Thompson said on Sunday. 'His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes. As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport. 'Even in the face of his illness, David showed extraordinary strength and dignity, continuing to uplift others with his resilience and spirit.
