Enforcement of helmet rule nets Rs 2.28 crore in Andhra's NTR
VIJAYAWADA: In a sustained crackdown on traffic violations, the NTR district police collected Rs 2.28 crore in fines over the past five months, from January 1 to May 31, as part of a rigorous road safety drive. The intensified enforcement followed directives from Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, who urged strict implementation of the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders.
Citing alarming statistics, the High Court noted that over 660 motorcyclists lost their lives in road accidents across the state in 2024. Check posts were set up at major entry points, including Prakasam Barrage, Ramavarappadu, and Kanakadurga Varadhi. Since January, police have issued nearly 90,000 challans for various violations such as riding without helmets, driving on the wrong side, and lacking valid licences. Officials said 62,128 challans issued in 2025 have already been paid, yielding Rs 2.28 crore in revenue. In comparison, of the 1.33 lakh e-challans issued last year, only 43,622 were cleared, bringing in Rs 1.88 crore. The remaining challans from 2024 remain unpaid.
'There has been a marked improvement in helmet usage,' said traffic police officials, noting the use of enhanced penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Enforcement is also being aided by CCTV surveillance and advanced cameras at key traffic signals. 'We identify violators using vehicle registration numbers and send notices. In some cases, commuters are fined on the spot,' they added.

Despite the earlier arrests of Sainath Shet from Ponda, Ratnakant Karapurkar from Zuarinagar, and Vegesh Redkar from Sawantwadi, and the subsequent nabbing of Sachin Mhatre from Pen in Raigad, police sources indicate that the probe yielded little new information about the supply chain or potential buyers of the banned substance. However, weeks of interrogation and follow-up investigations failed to penetrate deeper into what was initially suspected as a well-organised smuggling syndicate. The case began with the June 6 seizure of 5.75kg of ambergris worth Rs 10 crore at the remote Dabamol village in Sanguem taluka. Initial investigations revealed promising leads when Mhatre's arrest exposed the interstate nature of the operation, with police discovering that Redkar sourced the contraband from the Raigad resident. TNNThe choice of Dabamol village as a transaction point has also left the cops puzzled, with investigators unable to determine whether this was a regular meeting spot or a one-off Inspector Ditendra Naik earlier expressed confidence about making additional arrests and busting the entire network, but sources now indicate that the four accused may represent only the lower rungs of the operation. The case bears similarities to previous ambergris seizures in the state, including incidents in Feb 2024 and 2020.

8 held for gambling in Manimajra, 64,000 recovered
Chandigarh: Eight persons gambling in the basement of SCF at Motor Market, Manimajra, were arrested Saturday night. Police claimed to have recovered Rs 64,000 from them. They have been identified as Mehboob, Sahil, Askar Ali, Safdar, Abdul Vahid, and Kuldeep Kumar — all residents of Manimajra; Sonu of Nayagaon; and Satpal from Jujhar Nagar village in Mohali. They were later granted bail. Charges under Gambling Act have been brought against them. Investigation is under way.

Two peddlers arrested with MD drugs worth over Rs 60L
Indore: Two habitual drug traffickers were arrested by Indore crime branch while attempting to supply MDMA drugs in the city. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a car near Rajkumar Sabzi Mandi on MR-4 Road and seized 57 grams of MD drugs, two mobile phones, and the vehicle. The estimated international value of the recovered narcotics is around Rs 60 lakh. The arrested accused have been identified as Imran Ajmeri, 27, a resident of Gandhi Gram, Khajrana, and Arif Ujjaini, 35, of Hina Colony, Khajrana. Both have a criminal background, with multiple cases already registered against them under the NDPS Act, as well as for brawls, loot, and excise violations. Imran confessed to being involved in around 8–10 criminal cases and working as a van driver. Arif also admitted to his involvement in eight previous offences. He also worked as a van driver. Police said that the duo used to procure MD drugs from other cities at cheaper rates. They were planning to circulate them within Indore. Following the interception, both were booked under section 8/22 of the NDPS Act at the Crime Branch police station. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the drugs and other individuals involved in the network. In another incident of drugs trafficking, two men were arrested by Kalu Kheda police in Ratlam. Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended the suspects at Ranigaon Phanta while they were transporting the contraband on an unregistered motorcycle. Authorities recovered 15 grams of MDMA and the motorcycle with the total seizure estimated at Rs 2 lakh. SP Amit Kumar said that the accused were identified as Wasim Khan and Riyan Khan, both residents of Kotdi in Pratapgarh district, Rajasthan. The police registered a case under section 8/22 of the NDPS Act.
