The recent death of a young entrepreneur, who reportedly took the extreme step after she lost followers on social media, is sufficient reason for us to pause and assess the role of social media in our lives.
There is no doubt that social media is here to stay and has a huge role to play in our lives. By holding up a world that seems perfect, and fickle with its devotion, social media can take a toll on mental health, particularly that of youngsters. On the other hand, the Netflix series Adolescence dragged us willy-nilly into a world of teenagers that adults thought they understood but were actually far off the mark from.
Given the centrality of social media in the lives of children, how can adults navigate this terrain?

Village in Etah on edge after clash over Dalit marriage

Dhakpura village under Awagarh police station limits in Etah district remained tense on Sunday (June 22, 2025) after a marriage procession of a Dalit family was obstructed and allegedly attacked by some individuals of dominant caste on Saturday (June 21, 2025) night. One policeman was injured while controlling the situation. Local Dalits alleged of facing threats and inaction by police. Police force is stationed in the village to calm down tension. Senior district police officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police, reached the village to control the situation. 'The groom was coming from Hathras. As the bride is from the village and belongs to economically weaker family, the marriage was supported financially by all communities in the village. The marriage procession was going to the bride's house, but some people asked to take it to the whole village before reaching the destination. While passing through the settlement of a particular community (Rajput), verbal altercation took place. Police reached the spot to control the situation. In the melee, someone from the crowd threw stones at the police injuring a constable. We have registered an FIR against both the sides and investigating the matter through video footage. However, the marriage happened peacefully,' said Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to The Hindu. People belonging to Dalit community alleged that attempts were made by some individuals from the dominant caste group to forcefully turn back the marriage procession and threatened not to pass through the community settlement, leading to the incident. Local Dalits alleged of threats and demanded police to take action and provide security. In the past too, western and central U.P. districts have seen many such instances where Dalit marriage processions were obstructed by dominant social groups. In multiple occasions, police and administration have intervened to allow the procession pass peacefully.

Athlete coach of a sports school booked under POCSO Act for ‘behaving indecently' with girl students in Eluru district

The Eluru Two Town police registered a case against an athlete coach of a sports school, who allegedly behaved indecently with the girl students. The accused, N.V. Vinayak Prasad, allegedly sexually abused an athlete, who was studying in the school located in the town, a few days ago. The coach asked the minor girl to come to his room and touched her inappropriately, though she resisted and pleaded to leave her, it was alleged. The girl complained about the misbehaviour of the athlete coach to the higher authorities, who enquired and confirmed sexual harassment in the government sports school. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case under POCSO Act and other Sections and took up investigation, said Eluru district Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore. 'We are investigating the case. Police will record the statement of the victim. The accused will be arrested soon,' Mr. Pratap Shiva Kishore told The Hindu on Sunday.

Hyderabad techie dies in road accident in Chintoor

Hyderabad-based software engineer Vysyaraju Raviraju (26) died while his three friends survived with minor injuries after a car in which they were travelling to Maredumilli hit a tree near Tummala village under Chintoor police limits in Alluri Sitharama Raju (A.S.R.) district. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the group of four software engineers were on their way to spend the weekend at Maredumilli. Chintoor Sub-Inspector Perooru Ramesh told The Hindu: 'Mr. Raviraju died while undergoing medical treatment in Government Hospital at Bhadrachalam in Telangana on Saturday evening. He sat on the back seat, but suffered a head injury. The deceased is a native of Visakhapatnam city.' 'The post-mortem was completed in Bhadrachalam Government Hospital and we handed over the body to his family members on Sunday,' said Mr. Ramesh. The police registered a case and investigation is on.
