ABU DHABI (WAM)As part of its cultural and intellectual programme at the 34th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the Muslim Council of Elders hosted a seminar titled 'The Role of Educational Institutions in Raising Awareness of the Importance of Intra-Islamic Dialogue,' featuring Dr. Khalifa Al-Dhaheri, Chancellor of Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, and Dr. Tarek Shawki, former Minister of Education and Technical Education of the Arab Republic of Egypt. In his opening remarks, Dr. Al-Dhaheri emphasised that the humanities represent the intellectual foundation upon which nations and civilizations are built, as they encompass values, ethics, and profound meanings. He noted that contemporary humanities encompass fields such as sociology, psychology, and philosophy, and are essential to civilizational development, underscoring the need for their active presence in today's cultural and intellectual discourse.Dr. Al-Dhaheri underscored that intra-Islamic dialogue constitutes a vital pillar for fostering understanding among various Islamic schools of thought. He highlighted the importance of moving beyond historical conflicts that have claimed innocent lives in favor of a unifying discourse rooted in shared values. 'Values such as mercy and justice are common to all religions and schools of thought,' he said, 'and these values must be instilled in younger generations. The voice of peace must rise above all others, and we must continue the journey of values and dialogue without being swayed by voices of discord.'He commended the efforts of the Muslim Council of Elders in promoting a culture of dialogue and human coexistence. He stated that the Council has emerged as a global leader in dialogue, both between religions and within Islamic schools of thought. 'The Council played a pivotal role supporting the Document on Human Fraternity—one of the most important documents in the history of inter-religious dialogue—signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019, marking a major milestone in strengthening Christian–Muslim relations,' he said. For his part, Dr. Tarek Shawki emphasised that developing educational curricula must begin with the early inculcation of values in childhood. He pointed to the rapid changes of the modern era and the widening generational gap as one of the most significant challenges of our time. 'We cannot apply the curricula of the past to Generation Alpha,' he explained, 'and it is essential that teachers and parents embrace new educational approaches before expecting students to do so.'
Dr. Shawki called for a comprehensive review of the materials presented to children and for expanding initiatives that reinforce identity and language. 'Investing in human capital is the most important form of investment,' he stated, 'and we need a conscious and responsible media to support these efforts.'

UAE Evacuates Citizens from Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The UAE has confirmed the successful evacuation of several citizens and residents stranded in Iran, following days of rising military tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv. The operation, supported by Iranian authorities, was carried out amid ongoing airspace closures and widespread travel disruptions across the region. State-run WAM released footage of the dramatic return: one man dropping to his knees to kiss a welcome mat on the tarmac at Abu Dhabi Airport, while other evacuees appeared visibly emotional. The exact number of evacuees was not disclosed. The evacuation comes after Israel's missile strikes on Tehran last Friday triggered a wave of retaliatory attacks and increased instability. Airspace closures have since grounded or rerouted numerous international flights, complicating repatriation efforts. As the situation unfolded, the UAE intensified its diplomatic outreach to help de-escalate the crisis and restore calm. Authorities also urged Emiratis in high-risk countries—including Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Jordan, and Iraq—to register on the Twajudi platform for emergency support. Relief for Iranians in the UAE In a show of solidarity, the UAE has also stepped in to assist Iranian nationals currently in the country. On Tuesday, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced that overstay fines would be waived for Iranian citizens unable to return home due to flight cancellations and travel restrictions. The directive was issued under orders from President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who emphasized compassion and support for individuals caught in what the government described as 'exceptional circumstances.' One especially moving clip shared online shows an elderly Emirati man, just evacuated from Iran, kneeling to kiss the ground upon landing—capturing the emotional weight of the moment for many. UAE made tolerance cornerstone of nation-building: FNC Speaker

Ghobash made the remarks during his address at the Second Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, currently held in Rome, co-organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Italian Parliament, with broad participation from parliamentary leaders, international organisations, faith-based institutions, and civil society representatives. Among the attendees were Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania; Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy, and Ignazio La Russa, President of the Senate of Italy. The UAE delegation included several FNC members. In his keynote, Ghobash spotlighted the Document on Human Fraternity, launched in Abu Dhabi in 2019 under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as a transformative milestone in interreligious and intercultural relations. 'This document was not merely a declaration of intent,' he said, 'but a moral and philosophical framework transcending religious faiths, establishing a new global ethic that elevates human dignity above all affiliations.' 'We gather today as representatives of our peoples, who, despite their different languages, cultures, and religious traditions, are united by enduring human values — values that safeguard dignity, belief, and the right to live in safety and peace,' Ghobash added. Ghobash also emphasised the symbolic importance of holding the conference in Rome, a city that has long served as a historic centre of human thought and civic development. 'Rome has, for centuries, embodied a dynamic civilisational path where nations interacted in the realms of philosophy, politics, law, citizenship, and pluralism.'
