Delhi cop suspended, two probed over Rs 2.4cr fake NCERT book seizure

India Today17 hours ago

Nearly a month after a major seizure of counterfeit NCERT textbooks worth Rs 2.4 crore, the Delhi Police has suspended a special staff inspector and launched an internal enquiry against two other officers over alleged procedural lapses linked to the case. The raid, carried out on May 16, followed a tip-off received by the now-suspended inspector. The operation, led by the Special Staff unit of Shahdara district in coordination with NCERT officials, resulted in the arrest of three individuals involved in the illegal printing and sale of fake textbooks.advertisement
According to officials, the team raided a premise on Mandoli Road, where they found Prashant Gupta (48) and his son Nishant Gupta (26), allegedly running the operation with help from several labourers. A significant stock of counterfeit NCERT books was recovered during the raid. However, questions have now been raised about the legitimacy of the raid and the role of the officers involved. Two sub-inspectors, one from the Special Staff and another from the Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS), are now facing a departmental enquiry. Authorities are investigating how the raid was approved and whether the team had proper jurisdiction to carry out the operation.'Special Staff is typically assigned to deal with serious criminal cases. It's unusual for them to conduct raids on counterfeit school books,' a senior police officer said. The enquiry will also look into financial discrepancies, if any, related to the raid.advertisementDespite the current controversy, the Delhi Police had publicly announced the success of the May 16 operation in a press briefing. This wasn't the first crackdown on fake textbooks. A month earlier, on April 15, police had seized over 4,000 counterfeit NCERT books from Arvind Gupta, 33, who was allegedly distributing them to students and shopkeepers in Samaypur Badli. Gupta, based in Rohini Sector 16, is believed to have sourced the fake books from several printing presses across Delhi to stay under the radar. The latest developments raise serious concerns about internal processes within the police force, even as they continue to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit educational material.(With PTI inputs)

Delhi cop dies as roadways bus crashes into car, overturns on NH-8

Gurgaon: A Delhi Police head constable died and five others were injured when a Rajasthan Roadways bus overturned while trying to avoid hitting a car that had suddenly taken the Delhi-Jaipur highway from a service road on Saturday morning. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accident occurred at the notorious Panchgaon Chowk, which has reported at least 10 deaths in the past three years. Ashok Kumar (39), who was from Alwar in Rajasthan, was posted at the Delhi police commissioner's office. He suffered critical head injuries and succumbed to them at a private hospital in the city. According to cops, the accident occurred around 9am when the bus — headed for Sikar in Rajasthan from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi — attempted to speed its way through the crowded junction. "All of a sudden, a Wagon R emerged from the service road on to the highway. The bus driver slammed the brakes and swerved to the left, but ended up hitting the car from behind. Since the bus was at high speed, it crashed past the road divider and overturned on the other carriageway," a police official said. Although the Wagon R was severely damaged, its driver escaped without any injuries. Passersby were the first responders. Along with traffic cops, they evacuated the bus passengers through broken windows and a damaged roof. The injured, who included a 10-year-old child, were rushed to various hospitals in Manesar and Gurgaon. A traffic sub-inspector, who was at the site when the accident occurred, blamed both drivers for negligence. "The car driver did not see the speeding bus coming from the Delhi side while taking a turn on the highway. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The bus, too, was hurtling down the road at 70kmph and failed to apply the brakes in time. Although it was a highway, the bus should have been travelling at no more than 30kmph because it was an intersection and had a high traffic volume. Speeding is the main reason behind accidents at Panchgaon Chowk," he added. Passengers alleged they had warned the bus driver about his reckless driving earlier in the journey, but to no avail. Ram Kumar Yadav, a passenger, said one traveller had even deboarded at Dhaula Kuan in Delhi, fearing an accident. "He had requested the driver to slow down, but he continued to drive the same way. Even the bus conductor supported him, saying that drivers of Rajasthan Roadways buses drive fast, but they ensure the safety of passengers. After reaching Delhi from Hyderabad, I boarded this bus to reach Kotputli and was sitting in the third seat. I suffered injuries to the hand," he added. Astha Raghav, who was travelling with her nine-year-old daughter to Neemrana, confirmed the driver's reckless behaviour despite protests from passengers. Both mother and daughter were injured in the accident. Pappu, a witness to the accident, said coordinated efforts with cops helped rescue 35 passengers in just a couple of minutes. Avtar Singh, the traffic in-charge for that section of NH-8, said the vehicles were promptly removed using an earthmover to avoid any traffic snarls. "We took six injured persons to hospital. One of them was declared dead on arrival," he added. A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence was registered against the bus driver at Bilaspur police station, said ASI Sandeep Kumar. "The injured passengers are being treated at various hospitals. We have initiated an investigation," he added.

Court orders confiscation of assets of Azamgarh liquor don

1 2 Lucknow: In a first-of-its-kind action against illicit liquor trade, the special Gangster Act court of Ambedkar Nagar has declared property worth Rs 1.75 crore belonging to alleged liquor mafia Motilal Gupta as govt property, following his conviction for manufacturing and distributing spurious country-made liquor that led to multiple deaths across several districts. Motilal Gupta, a resident of Mittupur village under Pawai police station in Azamgarh, was running a large-scale operation of brewing counterfeit country liquor. The liquor, packaged with fake wrappers bearing names of reputed brands and filled in glass bottles, was sold extensively across nearby villages and districts. The illicit operation came under the scanner after a major tragedy on May 10, 2021, when several villagers from Singhora in Jaitpur consumed the toxic liquor. That evening, Amit Chauhan—a local resident—died, while others including Mahesh Chauhan, Jaisraj Chauhan, and Sonu Chaturvedi fell critically ill. Over the following days, Jaisraj Chauhan died on May 21, Ram Subhag Chauhan (a retired information officer), and residents Ravi (from Choudhaprash), Lallan Singh (from Sohagupur), and Shyam Singh (from Mahangipur, Katka) also succumbed. Similar fatalities were later reported from other districts due to consumption of the same poisonous brew. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Motilal Gupta—allegedly operating as a liquor contractor—was arrested and sent to jail. On Jul 23, 2021, he and 10 associates were booked under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. Gupta had later challenged the property seizure initiated by the Ambedkar Nagar district magistrate dated May 13, 2022, arguing confiscated assets—including plots and a newly constructed double-storey house—had been legally acquired. However, the court, after thorough examination, found that neither Gupta nor his wife Suman Devi could furnish valid documentation or prove lawful sources of income for purchasing and developing the properties. In its verdict, the special court confirmed that the properties had been acquired through unlawful earnings from the illicit liquor trade and ordered their permanent confiscation in favour of the state govt. "The court has upheld the seizure of property acquired through illegal activities. Motilal Gupta's assets worth Rs 1.75 crore have now been declared state property," confirmed Ambedkar Nagar superintendent of police Keshav Kumar.

2 Nepalese among 4 held for cyber fraud

1 2 Jaipur: Four men, including two Nepalese nationals and two Delhi residents, were arrested from a city hotel for their involvement in a cyber fraud operation with links to Chinese cybercriminals. The gang is believed to have facilitated fraudulent transactions worth Rs 24.4 crore, with complaints registered on the national cybercrime reporting portal from several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Police identified the accused as Lal Dorge Tamang and Suaj Tamang from Nepal, and Pawan Jain and Abbu Shahma from Delhi. The arrests were made following an FIR lodged earlier in 2025. Twelve mobile phones, one laptop, and three cheque books were recovered from the suspects during the operation. According to DCP (Crime) Kundan Kanwaria, the racket was led by Lal Dorge Tamang, a resident of Sindhupalchowk in Nepal. He created a well-organised network that supported Chinese cybercriminals by supplying them with mule bank accounts. These accounts were used to route illicit funds, and the accused managed them through social media platforms and encrypted messaging apps like Telegram. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The gang's modus operandi involved renting bank accounts from individuals in exchange for a commission. The account holders were instructed to install a suspicious APK file on their phones. Once installed, the app gave Chinese handlers remote access to the devices, allowing them to control the bank accounts and conduct transactions from afar. The commissions were paid in USDT, a cryptocurrency commonly used in illegal online operations. The suspects earned between 2 to 5 percent per transaction, with Lal Dorge receiving 4 to 5 percent from the Chinese operators. He, in turn, passed on 2 to 2.5 percent to the mule account holders. Police received a tip-off about suspicious individuals staying at Hotel Sanjay Palace near Polo Victory in Jaipur. Upon investigation, they found that these individuals were involved in procuring and renting out bank accounts to cybercriminal groups based in China. The investigation also revealed that Pawan Jain, a resident of Rohini North in Delhi, was in regular contact with a woman named Sushma, believed to be the mastermind behind the gang. Sushma, currently based in Dubai, served as the key link between the Chinese groups and their Indian and Nepalese associates.
