‘Free to be': participants and spectators fill parade route before start of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
A bedazzling band of floats and dancers are waiting in the wings ready to snake their way into Australia's grandest celebration of queer culture.
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras participants and a crowd of thousands decked in splashes of florescent pink and yellow, alongside trademark bright rainbows, began filling the parade route in Sydney's queer-capital of Darlinghurst late Saturday afternoon.
'I've been coming since I was 17 … seeing the community gather throughout the evening is enjoyable on its own,' Jed Piasevoli said, as he watched the activity from his street-side camping chair.
'It's a night to embrace all of the queer energy,' his friend Timothy Trisic said. 'It's a chance to let loose and be ourselves for at least one night.'
Among them will be Bhushan Joshi and co, who will be decked out in summer gear with 1980s and '90s vibes, as medical group GLADD's float pumps out a remix of Olivia Newton-John's Get Physical.

'We want to challenge the shame and guilt that the queer community sometimes feels towards their body or keeping fit,' the emergency consultant said.
Another group marching to a Newton-John hit – Xanadu – will be the Peacock Mormons, a group founded by Brad Harker and husband Scott in 2018 to protest policies enforced by church leadership.
About half of the group's 100 members are from religious backgrounds, including formerly devout Catholic and straight-living Brian Dunne.
He came out at the age of 65 after a cancer diagnosis. Nine years later, he enjoys the full support of his former wife, five children and 13 grandchildren.
'To me, that's more of a Christian attitude than unfortunately what some church people have towards LGBTQIA+ people,' Dunne said.
The 2025 Mardi Gras theme is 'Free to be', a message Harker and Scott work to reinforce to young LGBTQ+ people through the Peacock Mormons group and simple actions such as holding hands on the street.
Mardi Gras was a celebration of how far the community had come while sadly marking an uptick in verbal abuse, threats of violence and assaults, Equality Australia said.
'It's a reminder that for many people in our communities, particularly trans people, such targeted acts of hate are a year-round occurrence and that despite our gains we are still fighting for equal rights and protections in the law,' chief executive Anna Brown said.
Another float will carry a Rocky Horror Picture Show theme, with members of Free, Gay and Happy performing the Time Warp.
The group was founded by Teresa Leggett after she supported her former husband, Michael, to come out.
'He thought it would be better to be dead than gay,' she said, 'so I took him to his first Mardi Gras to show him how amazing the gay community was.'
They attended their first Mardi Gras together more than two decades ago and have returned every year since with an elaborately crafted float.
Being part of the parade was surreal, Ms Leggett said.
'It's a sound you've never heard before, 250,000 people at that very moment wish they were you,' she said.

Now, royal experts believe Meghan will turn her back on her former friend amidst a sexual assault claim. Speaking on The Sun's Royal show, expert Samara Gill has suggested that the allegations against Perry could damage the Sussexes' brand. Samara said: "There's nothing very Christian about a sexual assault claim and I think it's just one other damaging thing to add to their now-war chest of things that have been a problem for them." She added: "I think it shows the type of people that Meghan likes to surround herself with and I think it is damaging to their brand yet again because he was meant to be their closest friend." Samara also pointed out that the couple had made the most of Perry's wealth - including his home, and his plane - when they left the royal family in 2020. Now though, she thinks the couple will be keen to distance themselves from the alleged abuser. She added: "Just watch how quickly they go." Samara criticised the couple's hypocrisy, as they cut off toxicity "even though they're the ones who are really toxic." It's part of a pattern of behaviour that Samara said reflects their eagerness to use people before throwing them aside. Earlier this week Tyler Perry was sued for sexual assault and harassment by fellow actor Derek Dixon. The lawsuit claims $260 million in damages for harassment that occurred over several years. Dixon alleges that Perry repeatedly sent sexually suggestive texts, despite Dixon making it clear he wasn't interested. This later progressed to Perry groping Dixon in July 2021, the lawsuit alleges. Finally, Dixon filed a complaint with the Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission in June 2024, before leaving his role in The Oval. Matthew Boyd, an attorney for Perry, gave the following statement to PEOPLE. He said: "This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. "But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail."

'Dont Mess With The Chemistry' was the first track I clicked of his & it teleported me back to the club room where I had danced to it & tried to shazam it the night before. Absolute belter. Kwake - Nucleus (WRECKS) Goes without saying, Wrecks records as a label are permanent invaders of my rekordbox. I absolutely love the latest release that comes from the amazing Kwake. Such a distinct sound to his production & includes all the things I love about a real raw dance floor focused club track where the chunky bass line fully cuts through. Gypsy Mitchell - Movin (Egyptian Lover Dub) (Modulor) Probably one of my favourite producers & that is responsible for one of my favourite electro tracks of all time 'Egypt, Egypt', Egyptian Lover has delivered for over 20 years pioneering the scene into what it is today. Always bringing a sleezy funky vocoder vibe, I love this Dub of Gypsy Mitchell and as a producer, I know how hard it is to make something sound 'simple' and not over cook a track. This just has a groove, big 808 business! Wallace - Cravings (ft Love Letters) (Phantasy) Fast becoming one of my go to labels, Phantasy is up there with the best of them & this track from Wallace 'Cravings' has it all. The vocal is so hypnotising, I kind of feel like it puts me in a certain mysterious mood every time I play it. Landikhan & Mira - Laika I have to thank John Digweed for introducing this track to me. I first heard it on his amazing Transitions radio show and have since played it out at many of my shows. I can see this being a track that lives in my sets all summer long.
