Big River Pizza in St. Paul announces closure, citing safety concerns
After nearly a decade in business, a popular pizzeria in Lowertown St. Paul has decided to close.
Big River Pizza announced the decision in a Facebook post earlier this week.
"This was not a decision we made lightly. We held out hope until the very last moment," the post said.
Owners say "the current political and policy landscape in town has made it increasingly difficult to ensure the safety of their employees."
Residents say they are going to miss their go-to pizza place, but acknowledge that safety in the area is a growing concern.
"I know there's a lot of crime in the area. I've seen a lot of police in the area. So it really sucks that's the reason they have to close," Henry McCulloch said.
Big River Pizza says it has had outstanding support from St. Paul police and other city departments, but they say broader policy challenges have impacted their ability to operate.
"In light of recent events in Minnesota, we won't be elaborating further on the local political landscape at this time," Big River Pizza said in the post announcing its closure.
The owner has not responded to WCCO's attempts to talk with him.
Big River Pizza will continue operating through June 29.

1 killed after being struck by semi while changing tire on shoulder of I-80 in Poweshiek County
POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa — A North Carolina man was killed after he was struck by a semi while he was changing a tire on a semi-trailer on the shoulder of Interstate 80. 1 in custody following evacuation of EMC Events Center downtown According to the Iowa State Patrol, at around 7 a.m. Thursday a semi hauling a section of a wind turbine eastbound on I-80 experienced a tire issue and pulled over near the 184-mile marker near Grinnell. The ISP said that Fergia got out of his vehicle and began to work on changing the semi's problem tire when another eastbound semi crashed into the pilot vehicle, which subsequently struck Fergia. According to a crash report, Fergia was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, the ISP said. The Los Angeles Dodgers waded into controversy on June 19, when they wrote on their X page that they had turned away ICE agents at their parking lot, and ICE quickly labeled the Dodgers' statement "false." "This morning, ICE agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lots. They were denied entry to the grounds by the organization," the Dodgers wrote in a statement posted on X. Tonight's game will be played as scheduled."
