Hong Kong beaten to curling bronze as Philippines win gold at Asian Winter Games
Hong Kong's men's curling team missed out on what would have been the city's first ever Asian Winter Games medal as they lost their bronze medal match against China on Friday morning.
The city's squad of Jason Chang, Martin Yan Ho-tin, Cheng Ching-nam, Chung Cheuk-hei and Ma Chi-lap were defeated 10-3 by the mainland team.
The Philippines won gold after winning the final against South Korea.
This year's Games are the first to which Hong Kong has sent a curling team. The city has appeared in six previous Asian Winter Games, going back to the first in Sapporo in 1986, but never won a medal.
Led by captain Chang, they lost their first match, also against China, but went on to prevail in their remaining four round-robin matches, seeing off Thailand, Japan and Qatar before finishing with a 15-1 thrashing of Saudi Arabia.
Hong Kong lost their semi-final 13-2 to South Korea on Thursday evening, while the Philippines squad were battling through to the final by defeating China 7-6, clinching victory only on the eighth and final end.

'However, we noted that the changing rooms and warm-up areas may need to be larger, and the air-conditioning settings should be adjusted to ensure that athletes compete comfortably, as their uniforms are quite heavy. "But we need to make adjustments to ensure it won't be too cold for the audience as well. "Many different events will have similar considerations.' Law expects a turnout of around 100,000 tourists and spectators. She said authorities are committed to delivering events "on schedule, smoothly, safely, fairly and justly". Law added: 'This involves many aspects, including the venue, detailed arrangements, security and technology applications. "On the other hand, we hope to attract as many local citizens as possible to participate fully since Hong Kong is one of the hosts. 'We also want to encourage more people from the Greater Bay Area and other provinces in the mainland to come to Hong Kong to watch the events, while also experiencing the latest developments in the city. "Of course, it's also very important that our Hong Kong representative teams achieve good results.' Law emphasised the Games' tourism potential, citing opportunities to offer travel packages or multi-stop itineraries to attract visitors to all three host regions. She also aims to introduce cultural and artistic experiences beyond sports to visitors in Hong Kong.

Photo: TT News Agency via AFP Swedish double Olympic pole vault champion Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis increased his own world record again on Sunday, clearing 6.28 metres to the delight of a home crowd at the Stockholm Diamond League meet. With victory in the event already guaranteed, Duplantis broke the world record for the 12th time as he sailed over the bar at the first attempt to improve on his 6.27m effort at Clermont-Ferrand in February. The 25-year-old ripped off his shirt in celebration and raced down the track in front of jubilant spectators at the Olympic stadium built for the 1912 Games. "It's a magical feeling, it's hard to explain," said Duplantis, who had not before broken the record in Sweden. "I wanted this so bad. I wanted to do this in front of everybody here in Stockholm. "It felt like really something special in the crowd today and I knew that everybody really wanted to see it too. "It'll be one of the greatest memories for me, I think, in my career." Duplantis notched up his 37th victory in 41 Diamond League outings, finishing well ahead of Australia's Kurtis Marschall who managed a best of 5.90m. The US-born Duplantis was in a class of his own in another punishing display of vaulting of the highest order. "I kept saying it was the only thing I was missing in the accolades, to break a record in Sweden," he said. "I've checked off pretty much everything now." Duplantis is the heavy favourite for a third successive world championship gold in Tokyo later this year. He is also a three-time indoor world champion. He first broke the world record in 2020 when he surpassed the 6.16m mark set by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie. Duplantis intends to push the bar even higher after his Stockholm exploits. Photo: Kenneth Chan Ellis Wong Chi-wang continued his red-hot streak and out-rode his 7lb claim thanks to his first Sha Tin turf double aboard Aerovolanic and Joy Of Spring on Saturday. The 24-year-old got off to the perfect start when Aerovolanic, a dual trial winner, weaved his way through traffic to make a winning debut in the Class Four HKU Heritage Handicap (1,200m). Wong travelled just ahead of midfield on the Pierre Ng Pang-chi-trained four-year-old, with the debutant looking very green and rolling around when put under pressure in the straight. The Frosted galloper got the hang of things late, however, and surged between horses 50m out to win a shade cosily ahead of fellow debutant Tourbillion Golfer and $3.8 favourite Rainbow Seven. And Wong's day got even better when Joy Of Spring flew down the middle of the track to win the Class Three HKU Foundation Handicap (1,800m) for his boss, Casper Fownes. On a day where coming from behind midfield was a real struggle, Joy Of Spring was slow away and Wong was forced to settle deep in the pack. The pair travelled ominously and as the field straightened up, Wong pounced into a gap and soon cut his mount loose, launching into the lead 200m out and readily holding a late challenge from Gentlemen Legacy. It was win number 46 in Hong Kong in a stellar period for Wong and Fownes was full of praise for his apprentice.
