The documentary begins intriguingly enough: 'Where do you want to go in the ocean? What is the most known site in the ocean? It's clearly the Titanic.'
The speaker is well-heeled, maverick American inventor Stockton Rush, whose mission it was to take paying passengers 3,800 metres into the Atlantic Ocean in his mini-sub to scope the ruins of the Titanic luxury liner that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912 after striking an iceberg 600 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland.
More than 1,500 passengers died in that disaster. Five died, including Rush, when his submersible the Titan imploded on its way down to the Titanic wreck on June 18, 2023.
The documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster takes a deep and disturbing plunge into the apparent arrogance of Titan mastermind Rush, the co-founder and CEO of the OceanGate undersea exploration company.
The doc, co-produced by Montreal GalaFilm boss Arnie Gelbart and directed and co-scripted by acclaimed British director Pamela Gordon, begins streaming Friday on CBC Gem. It will also be broadcast on CBC Television June 20.
The production team has done a thorough job in bringing this tragedy into fuller focus, aided and abetted by insightful interviews, rare footage of the Titan's final voyage and other failed dives plus access to the U.S. Coast Guard's investigation.
Experts interviewed had misgivings about the Titan's structure, particularly its carbon-fibre hull, even if Rush had pulled off some dives prior to its final descent. There were other ominous warning signs, like seeping water damage and cracking engine sounds.
Mutters one skeptic: 'Everyone stepping on board the Titan was risking their life.'
The feeling was that Rush was 'hell-bent' on taking the Titan to dangerous new lows under the ocean, someone seeking to 'democratize deep-sea exploration.'
Rush was an engineer who initially dreamed of becoming an astronaut. But when it became apparent he was never going to make it to 'Jupiter or Mars,' he turned his sights in the opposite direction. He concluded that would require a 'special sub.'
Rush had the money, vision and drive to do so. He was a patrician whose roots went way back, with two of his ancestors having signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
History, as is often the case, repeats itself here. How's this for cruel irony? Rush's wife's great-great-grandparents, owners of the fabled Macy's department-store chain, perished on the Titanic. They were rumoured to have been the richest passengers aboard.
Christine Dawood is understandably livid. Among the five who died aboard the imploded Titan were her billionaire British-Pakistani husband, Shahzada, 48, and son Suleman, 19. She blames 'ego and arrogance' for their deaths.
Gelbart has long been consumed by the Titanic and Titan. He brings to the documentary a wealth of factoids about both as well as Rush's participation.
'Rush had done some 88 dives prior to his last, but not all successful ones,' Gelbart says in a phone interview. 'It went down successfully only six times.'
Gelbart had been involved since 2017 when Rush had come up with a working model of the Titan, which he had initially tested in the Bahamas. Then ensued a lot of correspondence with Rush, who was to move to his company's home in Everett, Wash. before heading to his last base in St. John's.
'He was looking for publicity, and I first wanted to make an Imax film, The Return to Titanic. What he was building for us was a remote camera that would go inside the hold of the Titanic, full of cars and furniture and other stuff that no one had seen since 1912.'
Gelbart's project was initially to be a four-part series, retelling the Titanic story but using Rush's submersible to examine what was left of it, including its interior.
'We were looking for a Hollywood celebrity for the project,' Gelbart says. 'I would have liked to go down there myself, but because it was something like $250,000 a seat, it was not feasible. Instead, we included that price in our budget for a celebrity, someone to tell the Titanic story by being next to it.'
Amid all the experimenting, failed testing and rebuilding of the original Titan, Gelbart stayed in touch with Rush.
'He was a great salesman and really believed in the Titan. As an engineer, he could talk the talk. We trusted him. We didn't think he was creating something that was fatally flawed. He explained the technology, but what do I know about carbon fibre?
'He moved his operation to St. John's for a number of reasons, one of which was so he wouldn't need to certify it in Canada. But on the downside was the weather there. And with water freezing, then thawing on the Titan lining outside, this could have created damage. In the final report of the U.S. Coast Guard, we heard this could have been one of the mitigating factors in the disaster.'
That official report has yet to be released. Why?
'When (U.S. president Donald) Trump took over this year, he fired the head of the U.S. Coast Guard. So they're not allowed to release it until they get a new head.'
Gelbart was shocked like most everyone else upon learning of the implosion.
'But 24 hours later, we had the commission from the BBC, Discovery U.S.A. and the CBC to make this documentary. It was such a whirlwind turnaround for a story that much of the world had been watching and waiting for news about what happened to the Titan and its occupants, until the fate was learned.'
Gelbart's GalaFilm has more than 120 film and TV credits and has won dozens of awards, including multiple Gémeaux/Geminis and one Prime Time Emmy Award for the Cirque du Soleil series Fire Within.
'But this was the first time in my life I was involved with anything as well-known as this one.'

Looking back on the early days of LGBTQ2 rock

Music can be a very powerful thing when it comes to changing the world. Rock has been used to spread political and social messages. It has been used to enlighten, to educate, to motivate, and to protest. These are the stories of musicians who weren't afraid of admitting to their sexuality when society wasn't ready to hear it. Pride Month is the perfect time to recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by various LGBTQ2 musicians during the era when you just didn't talk about who you loved. I'll start by posing this question, although you know the answer, but I'll ask it anyway. What do the following people have in common? Tchaikovsky, Handel, Schubert, George Gershwin, Beatles manager Brian Epstein, Freddie Mercury, B-52's singer Fred Schneider, Morrissey, punk legend Bob Mould, and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.? Here are a few more: Pioneering pre-rock guitarist sister Rosetta Tharp, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Mellisa Etheridge, Tegan and Sara, and St. Vincent. Story continues below advertisement All of the above — and many, many more — identify as gay, non-binary, bisexual, or someone LGBTQ2. Who was the first rocker to come out of the closet? A good pick would be Little Richard, although he battled with his sexuality throughout his life. His image was always campy and fabulous and the original uncensored lyrics to his hit 'Tutti Frutti' leave little doubt. But in 1957, right in the middle of an Australian tour, he had a crisis of faith after claiming to have dreamt of his own damnation, much of which had to do with being gay. He quit the music business and never again reached the rights he achieved in the 1950s. The next major coming-out was David Bowie. He's been sporadically attracting attention since 1964 when he appeared on British TV as the spokesperson for a made-up organization known as The International League for the Preservation of Animal Filament. He was just 17 at the time. Story continues below advertisement But Bowie had just started. In January 1970, he became one of the first pop stars to be interviewed by Jeremy, a gay magazine. The article had nothing to do with his sexuality, but the very fact that he appeared in a gay magazine was very radical. Just three years earlier, you could still be sent to prison for being a homosexual. Ten months later, the cover of his The Man Who Sold the World album featured Bowie lounging in a long flowing blue dress designed by a man known as Mr. Fish. This was the most feminized male image of a rock star the world had ever seen. Many record stores (especially in the U.S.) refused to display or even stock the record, necessitating the release of a version with alternate artwork. Even so, the record sold less than 1,500 copies in America between November 1970 and June 1971. Such was the state of the world then. It was largely a publicity stunt to set up the debut of his Ziggy Stardust character. But for certain people, the effect of those words was incalculable. Ziggy's androgynous bisexuality, makeup, and glitter (along with what was described as a lewd performance on Top of the Pops) offered hope to closeted people around the planet. Story continues below advertisement Yet Bowie (via Ziggy) wasn't the world's first openly gay rock star. We might look to Lou Reed, whose parents sent him for electro-shock therapy as a teenager as a way to exorcise what they feared were 'homosexual tendencies.' In 1972, after leaving The Velvet Underground, he adopted a very glam image, wearing S&M and fetish gear, hair bleached almost white, and black painted fingernails. His songs often explored the kinky side of life, including 'Walk on the Wild Side,' a top 40 hit that told the story of some of the more colourful real-life characters in Andy Warhol's world: Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn, Joe Dallesandro, and Joe 'Sugar Plum Fairy' Campbell. Even though Lou married a woman in 1973, many just supposed he was gay. Was he? Certainly bisexual at the very least, but he never was public about it. Story continues below advertisement The first rock singer to be unambiguous about being gay was Jobriath. Born Bruce Campbell, he was a former member of a forgotten California band called Pigeon. From there, he got into musical theatre, performing in productions of Hair. He was also a part-time drug addict and occasional rent boy. In the early 1970s, he acquired a manager named Jerry Brandt who almost immediately struck a half-million-dollar deal with Elektra Records. His debut album was recorded with help from Peter Frampton and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. To launch the record, Elektra paid for a $200,000 billboard of a nearly-nude Jobriath in the middle of Times Square. Full-page ads appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vogue, and even Penthouse. Another $200,000 was spent on a stage production that was supposed to open at the Paris Opera House, which included a 40-foot model of the Empire State Building that was supposed to symbolize…well, you know. And in interviews, Jobriath referred to himself as 'a true fairy.' Story continues below advertisement But it all came crashing down. The Paris shows never happened, and after two poorly-selling albums, Jobriath disappeared. He bounced between New York and Los Angeles, not doing much of anything because of a punishing iron-clad managerial contract. By the early '80s, his bathhouse habits caught up to him and he contracted HIV/AIDs. He died on Aug. 3, 1987, one week after his 10-year contract with Jerry Brandt expired. Years later, thanks mostly to a contingent of fans who discovered him after his death — Morrissey is one of his great admirers and promoters — the world came to know about Jobriath's contribution to LGBTQ2 history. We need to acknowledge a few others. A British folk-rock band called Everyone Involved sang a few pro-gay songs as early as 1972. There's a 1973 song by Chris Robinson entitled 'Looking for a Boy Tonight.' A German band, Flying Lesbians, appeared briefly in 1975. Steve Grossman was an openly gay folk-blues singer in the '70s. And in 1978, The Gay/Lesbian Freedom Band, which billed itself as the first openly gay musical organization in the world, was founded in San Francisco. One of the great things about '70s punk rock was the concept that music belonged to everyone and that anyone should be able to make music, regardless of age, economic background, musical ability, gender, or sexual orientation. Punk allowed gay performers such as Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks, Elton Motello, Jayne (formerly Wayne) County, and Ricky Wilson of The B-52's (who tragically may be the first rock performer to die of AIDS). Story continues below advertisement There were others, too. While no one in the New York Dolls was gay (at least we don't think so), they were the first band to really push androgyny as part of their image with makeup, big hair, and of course, plenty of spandex (history records that they seem to have been the first group to perform in spandex.) Big Boys were a Texas punk band into skateboarding long before it was mainstream. Frontman Randy 'Biscuit' Turner was loudly and proudly out. New Wave took the campy elements of disco and featured hundreds of techno-pop acts with effeminate men and androgynous performers. By the early '80s, many bravely played up their sexuality. Think Boy George of Culture Club, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Canada's Carole Pope in Rough Trade, a name taken from gay subculture. She was up front about being a lesbian. 'Yeah, I've got different ideas about sex. You wanna make something of it?' Pretty bold stuff for dull, boring, conservative Canada. Story continues below advertisement As the '80s faded into the '90s, projections and demonstrations of non-heterosexuality became mainstream. There's still homophobia and prejudice, but most music fans today could care less about whether a performer is gay, straight, queer, or trans. Does rice contain arsenic? Yes, here's how you can reduce the risk

Arsenic in rice isn't a new concern, but a recent report published by Healthy Babies Bright Futures (HBBF) brought the issue back into the spotlight. The study found arsenic in all 145 rice samples bought at stores across the United States. More than a quarter surpassed 100 parts per billion (ppb) of inorganic arsenic, the Canadian and American federal limits for infant rice cereal. Health Canada says rice and fruit juice are the most common dietary sources of inorganic arsenic, a toxic chemical. So, how worried should you be? 'With all things to do with food safety, it comes down to reducing the risk of exposure,' says Lawrence Goodridge, a professor at the University of Guelph's Department of Food Science and director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety , who wasn't involved in the HBBF report. 'People can reduce their risk by consuming less of those foods.' Arsenic was 'the poison of choice in Victorian times,' says Keith Warriner, a professor at the University of Guelph's Department of Food Science, who wasn't involved in the HBBF report. It's also ubiquitous. 'The reality is, arsenic is everywhere. So it's not a case where you can avoid it.' Warriner underscores that people shouldn't stop eating rice altogether because of arsenic. After all, it's a staple of many cuisines with cultural significance and health benefits. 'It's a concern to have, but it's not 'I'm going to give up rice' because there are things we can do to minimize.' Here are ways to reduce the risk, from the rice you buy and how you cook it to diversifying your diet with grains lower in heavy metals such as arsenic. The more toxic of its chemical forms, inorganic arsenic is considered a carcinogen and is naturally present in soil and groundwater. Long-term exposure has been associated with an increased risk of health problems, including cancer, cardiovascular disease and skin lesions . When exposure happens in utero or during childhood, it 'may affect development and increase the risk of cancer in adulthood,' according to Health Canada. Babies and young children are 'the real concern,' says Goodridge. The toxicity accumulates more easily because they're smaller and their body weight is lower. 'Infant rice products can be a source of significant exposure,' he adds. 'It doesn't mean you can't give it to your kids, but limit it. It shouldn't be the primary grain cereal that they're fed. It shouldn't be the primary milk that they're given.' Goodridge advises rotating rice-based foods such as cereals with other grains. The same goes for rice milk and fruit juice, which Health Canada recommends limiting for children under two. The recommendations also apply during pregnancy because arsenic exposure can affect the developing fetus. 'Like most risks we have in life, it all depends on exposure and the amounts we get. If we go on the (Ontario Highway) 401 every day, our probability of crashing will be higher than someone who travels there once a year,' says Warriner. 'The more frequently you consume (rice), the more likely you are to accumulate it because arsenic accumulates. That's one of the bad things about it.' With rice, studies suggest all is not equal. Inorganic arsenic levels can vary by type and growing region. The HBBF report found that brown rice, Italian Arborio rice (used to make risotto) and white rice grown in the southeastern United States had higher amounts of heavy metals. On average, California rice (Calrose, sushi, jasmine, white), Thai jasmine rice and Indian basmati rice had 32 per cent less heavy metals than other types. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element but can also be introduced through human activities, such as mining and pesticide use. Rice grown in southeastern U.S. states such as Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas tends to have higher arsenic levels because, according to Goodridge, cotton farmers used arsenic-based pesticides to treat their crops in the past, contaminating fields now used to grow rice. Brown rice is prone to higher levels than white because it retains arsenic in the bran layer. 'One thing that people can do is moderate their intake of certain types of rice,' says Goodridge. 'The key is, if you like brown rice, limit the frequency.' Many choose brown rice because it contains more fibre and nutrients than white. As a whole grain, the bran, endosperm and germ are intact. The rub is that the arsenic happens to accumulate where the nutrients are. 'That's one of the problems. Getting rid of arsenic also can get rid of nutrients (such as iron),' says Warriner. 'So it's all a place of balancing things.' Rice tends to have higher levels of arsenic than other grains, so Goodridge advises people to diversify their diets. The HBBF report found that alternative grains, including barley , couscous , farro , oats and quinoa , have 69 per cent less heavy metal contamination than rice. Rice is more susceptible to arsenic due to a combination of factors, including plant physiology. 'Different plants have different capacities to accumulate,' says Warriner. 'They transport this arsenic in. And some, it's actually a nutrient. There are microbes out there that need this sort of arsenic.' The cultivation method in paddy fields is another reason. 'If the arsenic is in the water, which it is, and you flood it, and you're exposing the poor plant to all this stuff, it would accumulate more,' adds Warriner. 'If it's in the environment, it gets sponged up into the rice itself.' As with rice, certain fruits can be susceptible to arsenic because it's present in water used for irrigation or juice dilution, Goodridge highlights. Compounding the issue, some fruit orchards (especially apple) were historically treated with arsenic-based pesticides. The arsenic lingers in the soil and can enter the tree and fruit. Health Canada has set maximum levels for inorganic arsenic in fruit juice and nectar, brown and white rice, and rice-based foods for infants and young children. Goodridge thinks Canadians should be confident in the limits but cautions that regulations aren't perfect. The government sets rules to ensure the food we buy is free from harmful bacteria, yet people still get sick, and outbreaks continue to occur. 'Consumers have to take their own responsibility for ensuring the practices that they do reduce the risk, reduce the chances of getting sick. Health Canada sets these limits. That's great. That means that what's in the grocery store should have lower limits. So now, if on top of that, consumers take additional steps, they further reduce the risk.' If you're concerned about arsenic and open to changing your rice preparation and cooking methods, you can perform an extraction in the kitchen. 'It's all to do with volumes of water,' says Warriner, a former chef as well as a food scientist. 'Can you extract that arsenic out of it and throw it away in the sink?' One option is parboiling. After rinsing and soaking your rice, add it to a pot of boiling water — 'the higher the volume of water, the better' — and cook for five minutes. Drain the rice (discard the cooking water) and return it to the pot with fresh water. Using a two-to-one ratio of water to rice, cover and cook over low-to-medium heat for an additional eight minutes to make 'the magic 13 minutes for cooking rice,' adds Warriner. A 2020 University of Sheffield study suggests that parboiling rice using a four-to-one ratio and then cooking it until all the water is absorbed (called the absorption method) using a two-to-one ratio removes 54 per cent of the inorganic arsenic in brown rice and 74 per cent in white rice. Adding to its benefits, the study shows 'no loss of micronutrients.' In practice, Warriner prefers the 'nice, loose' texture of the absorption method. While it doesn't yield any arsenic extraction, he eats rice once a week at most. 'I don't usually have it more than that, so your exposure is going to be much less.' Another option is cooking rice like pasta, which Health Canada recommends. Goodridge highlights that you should always rinse your rice and, if you have time, soak it, even for just 10 minutes, before adding six to 10 parts water to one part rice. Once the rice is cooked, drain the excess water. Compared to the absorption method on a stovetop or in a rice cooker, this technique 'will significantly reduce inorganic arsenic by up to 50 to 60 per cent,' says Goodridge. Parboiling and cooking rice like pasta 'are the two main cooking methods that would significantly reduce arsenic. And if you're eating white rice versus brown rice, then that rice has much less arsenic than the brown rice.'
