Pahang rolls out RM203mil for housing, fire stations and infrastructure
KUANTAN: The construction of six fire stations, seven solid waste management projects and eight People's Residential Programme (PRR) housing projects are among the slew of initiatives worth some RM203 million carried out across Pahang this year.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the planned public facility infrastructure development and upgrading projects will be executed in Pahang under the supervision of the relevant departments and agencies under the ministry.
He said RM7.3 million has been set aside for the construction of the six fire stations including in Sungai Lembing, Goh Tong Jaya (Genting Highlands), Pulau Tioman(Rompin) and Bentong.
"The solid waste management projects will be carried out by the National Solid Waste Management Department in Kuantan, Lipis, Maran, Bentong, Cameron Highlands, Temerloh, and Pulau Tioman with a cost of RM23 million.
"Some RM21 million has been set aside for four development projects under the jurisdiction of the local authorities including the construction of a business centre in Cameron Highlands, developing Pekan Sentral in Pekan, and slope maintenance works. T
"The project will be monitored by the local government department under the ministry along with the local authorities in Pahang," he told reporters when met at the ministry's Sentuhan Kasih programme at Kampung Cempaka here today.
Nga had earlier handed over the house keys to the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) owners and mock cheques for the development and planning allocations in Pahang.
Meanwhile, he said eight PRR housing projects—designed to offer integrated, commercially viable and conducive environments—will be built in Kuantan, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Inderapura and Bera, costing RM61 million.
Nga said 782 Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) units are being built in Pahang this year by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd at a cost of RM63.45 million, with 472 units completed so far.
"The RMR scheme was introduced to help households earning below RM5,000 a month who either have no home or are living in dilapidated conditions, but own land suitable for building.
"Each unit is given a RM20,000 construction subsidy, borne by the government," he said.
He said that to ensure all the planned projects are carried out according to schedule, the ministry will work closely with the Pahang government through the local authorities.
"Some of the projects have already started and the ministry's key performance indicator is to complete them by the end of this year except for PRR. PRR will have to go through the tender process and will need time to complete," he said.
Also present was Pahang Local Government, Housing, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff.

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah recorded RM7.3 billion in manufacturing investments in the first quarter this year, making it Malaysia's top destination for the sector. State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe said Sabah also ranked third overall in total investments across all sectors, adding that the next step is to empower local SMEs to industrialise and compete globally. 'This is a positive sign that Sabah is gaining traction, but we cannot just rely on external investment. Our local businesses must participate in this growth and move beyond being just small,' he said, when officiating the SME Sabah Conference 2025, Friday. Phoong said SMEs must shift towards becoming small and medium industries (SMIs) that produce export-ready goods. 'We must create, not just consume. We need more products made in Sabah, exported from Sabah,' he said. To support this, he said the State Government has allocated RM15 million this year to help small businesses acquire machinery, adopt automation and scale up operations. He also noted that Sabah's export volume rose by 11 per cent up to May, indicating an increasingly stronger industrial base. 'This shows that when we build capacity, Sabah can move toward becoming an export-driven economy. We cannot depend on imports forever,' he said. The conference was officially recognised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), which he said affirms the quality and technical relevance of the discussions held. 'To our engineers and technical experts, your knowledge is vital in strengthening Sabah's industrial ecosystem,' Phoong said. He announced the development of a 100-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Lahad Datu, the largest in Southeast Asia. 'The project will help stabilise Sabah's power grid and meet the rising demands of an expanding industrial sector,' He also welcomed AirAsia's new Kota Kinabalu-Taipei-Fukuoka route, saying it would benefit both the tourism and investment sectors. 'It's not just about tourists. More direct connectivity means more investors and business travellers can easily access Sabah,' he added. However, he voiced concern over upcoming federal policies that could increase costs for SMEs, including the rationalisation of RON95 and diesel subsidies, SST expansion and the Sabah Labour Ordinance set to take effect July 1. 'We should not implement all these policies simultaneously. Each must be carefully reviewed to determine which should move forward, which should be postponed and which need to be re-evaluated,' he said. Phoong said he had raised these concerns during a national SME consultation chaired by Datuk Ewon Benedick and welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's openness to policy reviews. He said Sabah's unemployment rate had dropped to 6.7 per cent in the first quarter, down from 8 per cent last year, and noted that companies such as ConocoPhillips have reaffirmed investment in the State. 'This tells us the economy is moving forward and investor confidence is returning,' he said. Phoong concluded on a light note, saying employers are now looking for the right people and so are voters. Malaysia, Russia to begin talks on AI integration in firefighting operations MOU
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Russia have agreed to begin talks on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into firefighting operations, flight simulation technology and firefighter training. The Housing and Local Government Ministry said the decision was reached during a bilateral meeting between its minister Nga Kor Ming and Russian Minister of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters, Colonel General Alexander Kurenkov, on Thursday (June 19). The ministry, in a statement on Friday (June 20), said the meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering strategic collaboration between Malaysia and Russia. Nga, in the same statement, confirmed that both the government and the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters had agreed to initiate talks on the MOU. "I believe we can enhance the nation's emergency response capabilities through strategic cooperation and the sharing of expertise in firefighting and disaster management,' he said.
