Amazon Prime adds 'pulse pounding' action film with hour long set-piece 'worth price of admission'

Daily Mirror25-04-2025

It is a follow up to the sleeper hit released a few years ago
Amazon Prime has just added a 'pulse pounding' action thriller sequel that includes an hour long set-piece fans claim is worth the subscription fee alone.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is now part of the retail behemoth's vast streaming library. The movie had a limited cinema release in the US earlier this year, where it raked in a respectable $57 million in a short period against its $40 million budget.

Due to its success, a third instalment is reportedly in the works. Subtitled Pantera, the film is a sequel to the unexpected hit Den of Thieves, which first hit screens in 2018.

Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. reprise their roles as law enforcer Nicholas 'Big Nick' O'Brien and international thief Donnie Wilson respectively. The original film is also available on Amazon Prime, allowing those who missed it to enjoy a perfect double feature.
The sequel's storyline draws from real-life events, specifically the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist, and follows O'Brien (Butler) as he attempts to track down a suspected thief in Europe with plans to collaborate on a heist, reports Surrey Live.
Pantera has managed to score a higher rating than its predecessor on Rotten Tomatoes with 62%, impressing many fans. One fan shared their thoughts online, posting: "This movie was awesome. The opening sequence is amazing, something straight out of a video game."
One reviewer highlighted a specific sequence crafted by director Christian Gudegast, describing it as "an hour-long intricately staged, authentically researched and tense, action set piece."

They further commented: "This sequence is worth the price of admission alone, as it's the closest an American hamburger crime movie product has gotten to the type of artfully silent nuts-and-bolts detail that the French became famous for when this genre was arguably at its peak."
Echoing similar thoughts, another viewer shared: "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is the kind of movie that'll make you want to quit your day job and become an international jewel thief (not that I'm condoning that, of course! ). With Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. leading the charge, the film is a high-octane ride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish."

They added: "What really sets Den of Thieves 2: Pantera apart is its inspiration from a real-life heist. The 2003 Antwerp diamond heist was one of the biggest and most daring jewel thefts in history, and the film does a great job of capturing the excitement and danger of that event. All in all, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is a pulse-pounding thrill ride that delivers on all fronts."
Meanwhile, a devotee of the first film concedes that the follow-up has big shoes to fill but insists it's a worthwhile watch. They shared: "More stylish than the first but still sassy, Pantera is a good watch, so long as you're willing to look past its ending and other logical leaps of faith."
They continued with a nod to the under-the-radar status of the original: "The original is an instant classic that no one knows about, so Pantera has a lot to live up to. It mostly delivers, with Butler and Jackson renewing their special game of chess."

Amazon Prime quietly drops all episodes of 'brutal' drama with Game of Thrones s

Amazon Prime viewers can now watch a 'riotously fun' British dark comedy about survivalists. Released in 2020 on Sky One, Two Weeks to Live stars Maisie Williams, best known for playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones from 2011 until 2019. In the six-part series she played 'strange young misfit' Kim, who was just a small child when her father died in mysterious circumstances. Soon after her mum Kim – played by Fleabag's Sian Clifford – whisked her away to a remote rural life of seclusion and bizarre survival techniques. After years cut off from the world, Kim decides to set back out and carry out a secret mission to honour her father's memory. But after meeting the socially awkward Nicky (Mawaan Rizwan) in a pub, the pair then face 'a chaotic series of events that puts their lives in danger' as they go on the run from murderous gangsters and the police with a massive bag of stolen cash. When the show was released, critics praised it as 'one of the best shows of the year' despite it largely going under the radar. 'One of 2020's best new shows, Two Weeks to Live leans into the witty humour of classic British comedies like Hot Fuzz and Brassic,' NME wrote in its review. 'With each episode gleefully upping the stakes, it's as if that doomsday clock actually is tock-ticking down to midnight. You'll be hooked into Two Weeks to Live like tinned tuna crammed into a nuclear bunker's storeroom,' SBS wrote. 'Two Weeks to Live is riotous fun, with a ton of heart and soul to boot, and after the year we've all had, it couldn't have arrived at a better time,' Digital Spy added. Fans said it was 'gripping', 'action packed with splashes of comedy', and an 'absolute gem of a show'. Speaking to Sky ahead of the show's initial release, Maisie explained the evolution of her character throughout the story. More Trending 'She's always felt really independent and very capable but emotionally, she's realising that being alone is going to be a big step for her and although she can probably handle herself physically, mentally she's facing huge battles every day,' she said. 'I knew it was always going to be very funny and the characters were very interesting, but we were very keen to make them real. I think you can write very funny people but not necessarily relate to that character in your own life so between myself, Taheen, Mawaan, and Sian we were very keen to route it back to something that is relatable,' she added. Two Weeks to Live also stars Taheen Modak, Jason Flemyng, Michael Begley, Thalissa Teixeira, Kerry Howard and Sean Knopp. View More » Two Weeks to Live is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Pixar film risks breaking devastating record despite being hailed 'dazzling'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Pixar's latest offering Elio has wowed critics, but it looks set to make a devastating new record for the studio. The animated sci-fi film tells the story of 11-year-old boy Elio Solis (Yonas Kibreab) who dreams of being abducted by aliens after feeling out of place on Earth for so long. He is accidentally beamed up to the Communiverse, an organisation which has representatives from several galaxies, where he is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador. It currently holds an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, but it could become the lowest domestic debut ever for Pixar. Box office reports from Variety show the film grossed $9 million (£6,6M) on Friday across 3,750 locations. It has been predicted that this could mean Elio will fall well behind 2023's Elemental, the film which currently has the lowest domestic debut, at $29M (£21.5M) The critics' consensus for the film could not be further away from its low box office, reading: 'Catapulted by its theme of building self-esteem, Pixar's latest cosmic wonder Elio boasts a fanciful world of original creations to dazzling effect.' 'Elio is another knockout, a quiet but determined shooting star that earns its place in the galaxy,' Tribune News Service wrote. Movie Mom added: 'Pixar's latest has everything we love about Pixar, a heartwarming story with endless imagination, charm, and wisdom, about an endearing character and the fears and joys of being human.' Others, however, pointed out the predictability of Elio's plot, with saying: 'Schmaltzy yet sincere, Elio, the latest from Pixar, is as predictable as they come but as tender as they can get.' Paste Magazine added: 'As a story about children finding a place to belong, discovering their true sense of self and realizing that parents and parental figures love you even when they don't always understand you, Elio is a lovely, if not particularly original story.' The Daily Beast summarised: 'For all its overt '80s homages, there's something timeless about Elio. too. It may be mid-tier Pixar, but that's still likely to make it one of the better animated offerings of the year.' More Trending Speaking ahead of the film's release, Kibreab opened up to Screen Rant about learning he had scored the role of Elio alongside Zoe Saldana who voices Elio's aunt Olga. 'I love all the Pixar movies and I watched them all the time and I still do today. And just to be in one, in an original Pixar movie, is such a pinch-me moment,' he said. They both reflected on what they had learned from each other while filming, with Emilia Perez star Saldana revealing, 'He's been teaching me how to be Alpha and Gen Z,' learning everything about 'rizz' and Skibidi Toilet. Elio is in cinemas now Got a story?
