AMMAN — Director of the Customs Department at the Zarqa Free Zone Rakkad Eissa, said that the number of cars exported from the Zarqa Free Zone towards Syria through Jaber Customs reached 3,664 cars, and from the joint Syrian Free Zone reached 1,070 cars.
Head of the Media Department at the Jordan Customs Department Hashem Al Hashem, on Tuesday revealed in a statement that the number of vehicles coming from the gulf countries towards the Omari area, in the direction of the Jaber borders, since the beginning of 2025 amounted to 120,000 vehicles.
The prices of imported cars in Syria witnessed a "significant" decline to reach a quarter of their previous value as a result of the application of new measures, which contributed to reducing the costs of importing cars, so that the car trade sector revived in Syria and exporting countries, including the Kingdom, Al Rai Newspaper reported.

Jordan: Fils Al Reef committee approves $1mln to power 186 sites across Kingdom

AMMAN — The Higher Steering Committee for Fils Al Reef, a fee added to each kilowatt a household uses, chaired by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, on Sunday approved the connection of 186 homes and sites to the national electricity grid during May, at a total cost of JD719,000. Kharabsheh said the committee endorsed several new projects to be funded through the Fils Al Reef, including residential communities and economically productive sites, following recent amendments that expanded eligibility criteria for electricity connection at the fund's expense, according to an Energy Ministry statement. Director of the Fils Al Reef Directorate at the ministry Hisham Momani said that the approvals cover several categories, including residential clusters of five homes located outside zoning boundaries, with a total cost of JD179,000, and clusters of at least three homes outside municipal limits, costing JD114,000. "Individual homes located beyond zoned areas but able to connect to existing networks were also included, at a cost of JD52,000," Momani added. The committee also approved the connection of homes belonging to low-income families located within organised areas and the jurisdiction of electricity distribution companies. "The segment, which aims to support vulnerable households, was allocated JD10,000." In addition to residential connections, the approved list included a number of productive agricultural projects, such as poultry, cattle, sheep, and fish farms located in poverty pockets outside zoned areas. These projects will be connected to the grid at a total cost of JD73,000, as part of the ministry's vision to support farmers, promote livestock development, and strengthen self-reliance in rural communities. The committee also approved JD40,000 for the installation of lighting on roads leading to cemeteries, aiming to ease access for residents during nighttime burial services. Additionally, JD153,000 was allocated to support productive, industrial, and investment projects located in underserved areas, provided they create job opportunities for Jordanians living in those communities. Momeni added that the Fils Al Reef would also support farms with artesian wells located outside zoning limits with JD59,000, contributing to the sustainability of the agricultural sector and national food security. Electricity would also be extended to projects related to public sector services and agricultural and charitable cooperative associations, with a total allocation of JD39,000. The Ministry of Energy reiterated its continued commitment to using the Fils Al Reef to enhance quality of life, boost agricultural productivity, and foster inclusive development across the Kingdom's underserved areas. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordan: Launch of region's first business accelerator dedicated to green chemistry

AMMAN — On behalf of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, President of the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Vice President for Scientific Research Arafat Awajan officiated the launch ceremony of the Global Greenchem Chemistry Business Accelerator titled: 'The Catalyst' — the first of its kind in the region dedicated exclusively to green chemistry. In his opening remarks, Awajan highlighted the vital role RSS plays in linking scientific research to practical applications in the service of industry, the labour market, and society, according to a RSS statement. He stressed that these efforts are made possible through coordinated collaboration between the society's Business Incubator and its specialised technical centres. He said that the Green Chemistry Project is one of RSS's 'flagship' national initiatives, aiming to accelerate the country's transition towards a green economy in line with the Economic Modernisation Vision. Awajan also praised the Ministry of Environment's 'significant' role in the project, underscoring the importance of the strategic partnership between the ministry and RSS, a partnership that has led to tangible successes and positive impacts on both the environment and the community. Sulafa Mdanat, representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), said that the adoption of green chemistry principles represents a 'vital' tool for achieving sustainable industrial development, contributing to environmental protection and human health. She reiterated UNIDO's commitment to supporting initiatives that align with national priorities and enhance economic stimulation in Jordan. The launch event was attended by representatives from Yale University, UNIDO, several Jordanian universities, the private sector, entrepreneurs and public institutions. A panel discussion was also held on the sidelines of the event, with participation from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, IPARK, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The dialogue focused on opportunities and challenges related to adopting and applying green chemistry concepts in commercial and entrepreneurial settings. Panellists highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination and collaboration among government entities, academic institutions, and entrepreneurs to overcome barriers and maximise available incentives. During the launch, the Green Chemistry Accelerator officially opened its call for applications. The programme will offer 'intensive' training and the opportunity to compete for financial awards to support the development, promotion, and commercialisation of green chemistry ventures. The Global Greenchem Programme is a global initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility, implemented by UNIDO, executed by Yale University and is nationally implemented by the Cleaner Production Unit at RSS, Jordan's National Cleaner Production Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.

Jordan: Cabinet approves transport commission restructuring, green hydrogen projects

AMMAN — The Cabinet, during a session chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved on Sunday a proposal by the Ministry of Transport to proceed with the restructuring of the Land Transport Regulatory Commission to define the complementary roles, responsibilities, and coordination mechanisms between the ministry and the commission. Under the proposed framework, the government would study the establishment of a Board of Commissioners for the commission, modelled after the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, according to a Prime Ministry statement. The move is intended to bolster the commission's independence, improve governance, and strengthen its economic and service-oriented functions, with necessary legal amendments to follow, the statement said. To support public transportation operators, the Cabinet also endorsed the allocation of JD4.1 million to subsidise operational costs for the period from June through the end of 2025, in accordance with international fuel price trends. The Land Transport Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Finance have been tasked with devising an implementation mechanism. The Council of Ministers also endorsed exempting Syrian buses entering Jordan from fuel support charges (diesel), at a rate of JD80 per bus carrying more than eight passengers. The exemption is contingent upon mutual measures by Syrian authorities and is expected to benefit transport operators on both sides. In the tourism sector, the Cabinet approved the justifications for the 2025 draft regulation on tourist guide services, as well as a draft amendment to the 2025 Tour Guides Association bylaw. Both drafts would be forwarded to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau for legal review and ratification. The Cabinet also instructed the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Jordan Valley Authority to set a ceiling of 4,000 dunums for land leases in the Wadi Araba region for investment purposes. 'Exceptions for larger areas may be granted in justified cases based on the nature and feasibility of the project, pending prior approval.' The Cabinet also approved allocating 770 dunums in the villages of Ghamr and Umm Mathla for food security projects implemented by the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army. As part of its commitment to improving healthcare services, the Cabinet also approved the continuation of procedures for establishing a new comprehensive health centre in Ajloun. The project would adhere to national standards for primary and comprehensive healthcare facilities. The prime minister had announced the project during a Cabinet session in Ajloun in April, noting that the JD1 million facility is expected to be completed in 2026. The Council of Ministers also approved an agreement between the Ministry of Local Administration and UN-Habitat to implement an urban greening and afforestation project in Sahab, Zarqa Governorate. The two-year project is valued at approximately $1.1 million. As part of the government's strategic National Water Carrier Project, the Cabinet approved a 30 million euro investment grant agreement between the Jordanian government and the European Investment Bank, funded by the Dutch government. The funding would support the Aqaba-Amman water desalination and conveyance project. In the energy and mineral resources sector, the Cabinet allowed the National Petroleum Company to retain JD3.4 million in dues owed to the Treasury for 2024. The funds would be directed towards drilling 80 new wells in the Risha gas field, with the goal of increasing natural gas production. The government also approved two land-use agreements, one with Jordan's Philadelphia Solar and the other with Germany's Enertrag, to conduct feasibility studies for green hydrogen production projects. "These are part of the government's broader strategy to position Jordan as a regional hub for green hydrogen," the statement read. With these agreements, the number of approved land-use deals for hydrogen development has reached six, out of 13 memoranda of understanding previously signed with leading energy companies. The six firms have completed preliminary feasibility studies and technical reports and are now advancing to the land allocation stage, the statement said. During this phase, companies will carry out detailed measurements of renewable energy sources to prepare final feasibility studies. Investment decisions will be based on these outcomes, the statement said. To support economic activity and ease the financial burden on businesses, the Cabinet approved exemptions from fines, fees, and additional charges for companies and individuals who settle their outstanding payments to the Income and Sales Tax Department through instalments. The Cabinet also endorsed the recommendations of the Settlement and Reconciliation Committee to resolve 900 pending tax cases involving companies and individuals with financial obligations under the Income Tax and General Sales Tax Laws. In a move to boost trade and investment, the Cabinet endorsed a request to establish a duty-free market on the quay of the new port operated by Abu Dhabi Ports Company in Aqaba. The market would operate under the regulations and conditions outlined by the Special Free Zones Committee.
