Keegan Bradley looks just about ready to captain the United States in this year's Ryder Cup after his clutch performance on Sunday to win the Travelers Championship by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley. Bradley had the crowd at TPC River Highlands in hysteria on the 18th hole, where he needed a birdie to win this final signature event of the PGA Tour campaign. It was rather surprising to see Bradley have this opportunity in the first place, as Fleetwood built a three-shot lead heading into Sunday, but he shot 2-over as his first PGA Tour win continued to allude him despite being a top 20 golfer in the world. Meanwhile, Bradley stepped up to the 18th tee box shooting 1-under, which was thanks to an absolute bomb of a putt from 64 feet that drained on the 15th green. That gave him a share for the lead at 14-under for the tournament. Bradley hit the perfect drive on 18, setting himself up with a 138-yard approach shot that he was hoping to stick close for a birdie chance for the win. That's exactly what happened, as he was eyeing his shot all the way to the green as it bounced and stuck less than six feet from the cup. Fleetwood, just bogeyed the par-3 16th to open the door for Bradley ended up three-putting for bogey, pushing an eight-footer on his second attempt to save par and force a playoff. Seeing Fleetwood miss that putt, Bradley stepped up to his ball for the win and sunk it, letting out a big cheer along with the many in the crowd. "Of all the shots and all the putts I've hit, I think I'll remember that one the most," Bradley said on the CBS broadcast. Fleetwood, on the other hand, was understandably "upset" after what transpired on the course, as he has the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour without a win than any golfer over the last 40 years. "I'm angry … it hurts," he said after the round. What made this such a significant battle between Bradley and Fleetwood was because of Ryder Cup being on the horizon. It will be held at Bethpage Black, and while Bradley is Team USA's captain, Fleetwood consistently plays on the European Ryder Cup squad. This was Bradley's eighth PGA Tour win, and if he wishes to be a playing captain in this year's Ryder Cup, he's certainly showing the clutch abilities to do so. He entered this week as the world No. 21 golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings. He will now be pushed into the top 12 in Ryder Cup standings as well with this victory at TPC River Highlands. While the top six in the standings after the BMW Championship earn an automatic bid onto the Ryder Cup team, Bradley does have the authority to choose himself as a captain's pick for the squad. If Bradley plays in the Ryder Cup, he would be the first playing captain since the legendary Arnold Palmer in 1963. It is the seventh and final Signature Event of the 2025 PGA Tour season. Like most Signature Events, this means it is a limited-field, no-cut event. Without a cut, players tend to feel a bit freer while out on the course, and that includes Justin Thomas. Advertisement Thomas has had an up-and-down season thus far. So, this environment at a course he enjoys is just what the doctor ordered. Following an opening round 3-under 67, he fired off a blazing 6-under 64 on Friday. That moved him into a tie with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler atop the leaderboard. Even more impressive were the conditions with which he played. Wind wreaked havoc on the field, with several top-ranked golfers struggling mightily. Wind gusts were clocked at over 30 miles per hour, with steady winds throughout the day. After his round, he was asked if there was an art to playing in the wind. 'Definitely,' Thomas said. Advertisement 'I just think it's control. I think it's why Scottie is so good in the wind. He hits the middle of the club face about every time. That's a huge part of it, distance control. 'The difference of riding the wind and holding the wind can be a 15- or 20-yard difference in the air in these kinds of conditions… If you're trying to hold one and you ride the wind, that's not good for a lot of reasons. I think it's way more art [compared to a science] because you just have to create and kind of feel out there.' 72 players entered the tournament to begin the week. Si Woo Kim and Jordan Spieth have already withdrawn due to injury. Of the 70 players tackling the TPC River Highlands course on Friday, only a handful played under par. The vast majority had a difficult time in the wind. PGA Tour winners like Sepp Straka, Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry, and Tony Finau all shot around 10 strokes worse than Thomas on Friday. Even the aforementioned Scheffler had a tough time. He finished 1-under for the day, tied with Justin Thomas at 9-under, atop the leaderboard entering the weekend. 'I see windy conditions, I just get excited because I know it's just extremely difficult, and a couple under goes a really, really, really long way. Following his tee shot on 13, Spieth knew that his day was about to end. Following his decision to withdraw, the three-time major champion detailed the injury. He explained how it progressed from his warm-up through his round. 'It was just like midway through on my irons,' Spieth said. 'Everything was great in my gym session, and I've been very, very excited to go out and play. Things have been getting better and better, and then my right scap just kind of locked — like tightened midway through the warmup, and I just kept hitting, and then all of a sudden it was moving up, everything around it started to — and then it was over the left and then it was like everything, so I stopped. Advertisement 'It was both sides of my neck and upper back… I quit 30 minutes early from my warmup and came back to the table with my physio who was out there on the range… I just wasn't moving very well, and then it just got worse. I was just going to try to see if I could somehow get through at even. This week's Travelers Championship is a limited-field, no cut event where any finish at all will help with Official World Golf Rankings, FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup points. 'It's a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points and stuff. It's like, well, what's the downside if I can finish of just finishing even if it's ugly, and then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt. I was walking off that tee, and I'm like, if it's even harder to turn, then I'm not going to be able to make a backswing that's even useful, and that's what happened on the bunker shot. I was like — it's only going to get worse to finish the round, and it's not worth it. I thought that was the time. 'I've never withdrawn from an event ever anywhere at any level, so I didn't really know what to do. It just became too much.'
