
Queasy Shane van Gisbergen 'leaking out both holes' powers through to win at Mexico
MEXICO CITY — A four-day stretch that in some ways couldn't have gone much worse culminated in an afternoon that couldn't have gone much better for Shane van Gisbergen.
Mired in 33rd in the NASCAR Cup Series standings and struggling in a rookie season, van Gisbergen captured the inaugural Cup race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as the Trackhouse Racing team overcame travel woes that resulted in them only having a partial crew for practice Friday.
"Crazy weekend and everyone dug deep," van Gisbergen said. "Everyone banded together. Those engineers arriving yesterday right before qualifying and the night before mechanics — it was a skeleton crew really on Friday.
"Credit to everyone who banded together and came up with a plan. And it ended up amazing."
It didn't come as easy as the margin of victory of 16.567 seconds, the largest gap between a winner and second place in a Cup race in nearly 16 years. The three-time Supercars champion, in his second year of racing in NASCAR, battled sickness that he said had him feeling "pretty rubbish today leaking out both holes."
Despite the sickness, van Gisbergen's dominance didn't surprise many. —
A stout road racer, he won in his first Cup start in 2023 when he prevailed at the inaugural Chicago street course race in a one-off event for Trackhouse Racing. That started conversations for van Gisbergen to move from New Zealand full time and compete in NASCAR, where he raced primarily in the Xfinity Series last season.
Having won the pole on Saturday and knowing he had a solid car, van Gisbergen said he felt queasy during the first stage of the event Sunday on the 15-turn, 2.42-mile road course before medication kicked in for the remainder of the 100-lap race.
"The first stint, I was feeling pretty average," van Gisbergen said. "I was like, 'This is going to be a long race. ... I looked at my watch and my heart rate, and I needed to calm down a bit. I kind of had to manage myself, whereas normally it's just push flat out without a think of the fitness."
While he led 60 of the 100 laps, van Gisbergen did need the cautions to fall his way to align with when he put on tires and took fuel. They did, allowing him to lead the final 32 laps.
"The car was obviously OK, but he's unbelievable," said SVG crew chief Stephen Doran. "It's amazing to watch him race at tracks like this."
Doran didn't have too much of a concern that van Gisbergen's illness would significantly impact his performance. But it was a little unknown as van Gisbergen said the illness came quickly Saturday afternoon and evening.
Having traveled extensively, van Gisbergen said he tried to be careful with what he was putting in his body during the weekend.
"My mind was clear but my body, I just had so much pressure in my stomach," van Gisbergen said.
If van Gisbergen was in pain during the race, he didn't indicate it to his team.
"I just kept reminding him to keep drinking some fluids," Doran said. "He had some little squeeze packs of energy pouches in the car with him. I could tell by his tone that he wasn't struggling too bad once he got racing."
Everyone in the facility could tell he had the dominant mix of machine and skill.
"I just need to work on myself a little bit, figure out what Shane was doing through a couple sections of the race track," said second-place finisher Christopher Bell.
Daniel Suarez, teammate to van Gisbergen, said SVG had a solid setup. Suarez came in as the home country favorite and had delighted the crowd by winning the Xfinity Series race on Saturday. Starting 10th, Suarez finished 19th, a result of not being fast enough (losing speed on the long green-flag runs) and the cautions not coming out at times that would match his strategy.
"We don't have exactly the same race cars," Suarez said. "We have different [geometry], different springs, so the cars are not the same. And then the strategy — today the strategy didn't work out.
"Do I think that with the same strategy I was going to beat him? I don't know. It's impossible to say. ... We just have to continue to work, and hopefully we get better enough in the next 10 weeks to make it into the playoffs."

For van Gisbergen, the victory vaulted him into the 16-driver playoffs despite his points position. The only way he would miss the playoffs is if there are more winners than 16 playoff spots (van Gisbergen was the 10th winner this year and 10 races remain in the regular season) as points are used as the tiebreaker.
"That's why I'm here, to win road races," van Gisbergen said. "But I'm not here to run last on the ovals, either. I need to keep getting better to justify being a Cup Series driver. I need to be performing on the ovals, too.
"I feel like we're really making strides, but this is what I'm here to do – make the playoffs, put another Trackhouse car in the playoffs."
In the first 10 oval races this year, van Gisbergen finished once in the top 20. In the four oval races leading into Mexico City, van Gisbergen earned three top 20s.
So it appears he has made progress. Slow progress but progress, nonetheless.
That doesn't mean it hasn't been a frustrating year. But van Gisbergen is known as someone who will fight through the struggles.
And the victory Sunday amid sickness appears to be no exception. He had no plans of going to sleep or taking more meds.
"I'm going to mix some Red Bulls with some adult beverages," he said.

YASA: UK Company Leading The Electrified Performance Car Revolution
The Ferrari SF90 Stradale takes advantage of YASA's electric motor technology. Electric cars predate those running on fossil fuel, but development was mostly dormant for a century after the combustion car took over in the early 1900s. The EV as we currently know it has only been around for a little over a decade. There's a lot of technological development taking place now, however. While most of the attention has been on batteries, motor innovation is extremely important too. One of the leading companies driving new motor technology is the UK's YASA, purchased by Mercedes in 2021. I talked to Tim Woolmer, Founder and CEO of YASA, about what makes his company special. YASA Technology: Available In An Electrified Supercar Near You The YASA name may not be familiar, but its electric motors are the secret sauce behind hybrid supercars including the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, Lamborghini Revuelto and Temerario, McLaren Artura, and Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance. The latter is particularly relevant because of YASA's ownership change. This will also be the brand of the first all-electric car to use YASA motors. 'AMG has spoken about its new architecture, and the first car launched will be high performance electric vehicle,' says Woolmer. 'It's going to be a lot of fun, but it will be a different clientele than a mid-engine supercar.' YASA's focus will remain high-performance cars, but the company always had wider goals. 'Our core mission is to accelerate electrification. Our customers today have a good fit with the USPs of the product. They appreciate the size, light weight, repeatable performance, and efficiency.' The Lamborghini Revuelto is another electrified supercar using YASA's motors. Originally, the YASA motor was extremely low volume, used in halo hypercars such as the Jaguar C-X75, Koenigsegg Regera and a land speed record car produced by Lola-Drayson. Now YASA is increasing its production capacity considerably. In 2024, the company produced 14,000 motors, and with a new facility in Bicester Motion, this will increase to 25,000 motors annually for 2025-27. As part of the Mercedes relationship, its motors will also be produced in Berlin by Mercedes-AMG itself. 'We're going down this journey of commoditizing the product, going to high volumes, and reducing costs,' says Woomer. 'I'm absolutely convinced that the technology has got a perfect USP in the sports car industry. But as we move to new architectures, it could be commoditized to wider volume appeal. Lightweight is great for everything.' YASA Motors Mean The Yoke's On You The clue to YASA innovation is in its name, which stands for Yokeless And Segmented Armature. The motors use a different design to conventional radial flux systems, which almost all other electric motors employ. They don't have an iron core (or yoke), while the rotating part of the motor is segmented. This is an axial flux system, with permanent magnet rotors on either side of the electromagnetic stator. The result is around three times the torque density per kg compared to a radial flux motor, and a considerable reduction in raw material usage. Where a Tesla motor might have around 30kg of iron, a YASA motor only requires 3kg for the same power and torque. It's also a quarter of the size with a third of the copper. While this is useful for any electrified vehicle, weight saving alongside high power are particularly beneficial for performance vehicles. YASA's Axial Flux design is much lighter and more compact than a traditional Radial Flux motor. 'There are no downsides to it,' says Woolmer. 'You can take 200 kilograms directly out of a vehicle. Then you could start to see electric vehicles on par or even becoming lighter than their internal combustion engine equivalents. That's a real problem we must deal with, because EVs have a weight problem. They're up to 400kg heavier than a regular car.' YASA can produce motors from 100hp to 1,000hp, depending on the application. Most of its projects so far have been tailored to a specific customer's needs, rather than vice versa. However, this flexibility means YASA is ready to produce motors for all-electric cars. 'The first pure EVs going to production will be with AMG,' says Woolmer. 'The hybrids have been a wonderful preparation for that, because the motor is very similar.' The YASA motor used by Ferrari. The British Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) has been a key factor in YASA's growth. This is a joint UK government and industry-funded organization supporting the development of low-carbon propulsion technologies for the automotive industry to accelerate the transition to Net Zero. 'I don't think I would be exaggerating if I said I genuinely don't think this factory would exist without the APC,' says Woolmer. However, the Mercedes-Benz acquisition has enabled YASA to take its technology to a different level commercially. 'YASA was never looking to be acquired,' says Woolmer. 'But Mercedes put forward a compelling case for the purchase. They wanted us to be the speed boat; they didn't want to destroy our culture. They wanted us to keep our innovation and our brand. In return, they've got the industrial might to invest in the technology, which they've done both here and in and in the factory in Berlin. Four years later, they were true to all those statements. They've invested a lot in the assets, giving us a big new facility at Bicester Motion. That was a £70 million investment, plus a big investment in the technology to scale it up. They have been the perfect scaling partner.' YASA's UK Tech Triumph Despite the factory in Berlin, YASA will still be a UK-based company. 'We will remain fully British with our headquarters in Bicester Motion,' says Woolmer. 'All the R&D on the technology is happening here in the UK. Mercedes has manufacturing satellites all around the world, but manufacturing is not where the core Intellectual Property resides. The aspiration is to increase manufacturing the UK, not just do R&D here.' YASA will continue to develop its technology and build motors in the UK. The UK will also continue to manufacture for customers other than Mercedes, where Berlin will solely serve AMG. But now YASA has much more scale available. 'Ten years ago, we struggled to make 150 motors,' says Woolmer. 'Now, if we got a contract for 50,000 motors, we would know what to do.' YASA isn't sitting on its laurels and is already looking towards the next development. 'The game changer will be in-wheel motor technology,' says Woolmer. 'Renault launched the 5 Turbo 3E that will be the first production vehicle with in-wheel motors, although it's a limited series.' Donut Lab is another company chasing this possibility. 'We're not focused on it yet, but in the future, we will talk about it a lot more. We've got technology that can radically transform the way we design vehicles, and that really is empowered by the size and the weight of the motors. People have been trying to crack in-wheel motors for 25 years, and it's hard, but based off all the learning we've had so far, we think we've got the tech to do it.'

NASCAR Cup Series at Pocono Raceway odds, expert predictions for Great American Getaway 400
The NASCAR Cup Series is in Pennsylvania this weekend for The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway. As drivers prepare to face NASCAR's 'Tricky Triangle,' we're getting race insights from our motorsports experts, Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi. They'll fill us in on NASCAR's future in San Diego, the roiling feud between Carson Hocevar and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and of course, favorites and long shots for Sunday's race. Take it away, guys! Jordan reported that NASCAR is nearing a deal for a Cup Series street course race in San Diego. Will this replace Chicago, or will it be an additional street race? What are your thoughts on the increasing street course races in the NASCAR schedule? How does it shift strategy among teams? Jeff: Personally, I think there's only room for one street course race per year in NASCAR. A street course needs to be highlighted in its own way, and it could quickly become less special if there are multiple per season. It's sort of like the NHL's Winter Classic when it was diluted with the Stadium Series; there's a careful balance when it comes to these special events. NASCAR is not traditionally a road racing series (it only had two road course races per season for decades) and certainly wasn't a circuit with street races until a couple of years ago, with the addition of Chicago. Fans are already weary of too many non-ovals anyway, but it's certainly an opportunity for teams like Trackhouse Racing, who can hire a road course ace to launch them into the playoffs. Advertisement Jordan: While NASCAR's original three-year contract with the city of Chicago is up at the end of the year, the possibility is there that NASCAR could return next year by exercising the option it holds. But to Jeff's point, having two street courses on the schedule could potentially take away some of the novelty, which is part of the appeal of doing this. Plus, there is the cost to consider when staging two such races. It certainly isn't cheap. Looking at it from the team perspective, it's a further indication that the schedule going forward, consisting of five to six road/street courses and six drafting tracks, will continue to feature a good mix of various tracks. Whew, Carson Hocevar really can't keep himself out of trouble, can he? (Though it seems he's good at apologies!) What do you think will happen with him and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.? Is it really just a coincidence that Stenhouse was the one Hocevar had a run-in with? Is that just bad luck or intentional? Could this boost performance for either of them? Is this a powder keg about to blow? Jeff: Yeah, Stenhouse is not going to let this one go. Unfortunately for Hocevar, that was the worst possible person he could have collided with, and it shows bad judgment on his part, because it was completely unnecessary. Hocevar was a lap down at the time, and he shouldn't have even let himself get close enough to Stenhouse for them to have contact; Hocevar wasn't racing for anything but cleaned Stenhouse out. Whoops. So now Stenhouse is going to have to enact some sort of revenge, or he'll come across as not being a man of his word, which is antithetical to his personal code. In other words, Hocevar either needs to watch his back or his rear-view mirror. Jordan: Word of advice for Carson Hocevar: If you see Ricky Stenhouse Jr. this weekend and he's wearing his shorts with the camo design, quickly walk in the other direction. I believe this is the final race to determine seeding for the in-season challenge. What should we know about this process, and what are the stakes at Pocono for that tournament? Do the drivers care? Is this on the teams' minds? Jeff: This has been such a silly way to seed the in-season tournament. Instead of just taking the point standings and going 1 vs. 32, 2 vs. 31, etc., NASCAR has been seeding the top 32 drivers over a three-week stretch based on their best finish. So the No. 1 seed right now is Denny Hamlin, who won at Michigan and then didn't even race last week at Mexico City. Meanwhile, Joey Logano is the No. 27 seed — so would it be an 'upset' if he knocked off a No. 6 seed in Round 1? Of course not, and he'll probably be heavily favored. So, again, doing it this way is a miss and will only confuse bettors. As for whether the teams care, the answer is no — not until next week, anyway. Once we start seeing the matchups and they start getting asked about it, then it could be on their minds more. Advertisement Jordan: In addition to what Jeff said about the seeding, keep in mind that the opening tournament race is at Atlanta, a track with a well-deserved reputation for generating chaos where multi-car accidents are commonplace. There's a good chance the bracket will see some notables knocked out early, with a good number of 'Cinderellas' moving forward. Additionally, the fact that the Chicago Street Course follows Atlanta only creates additional opportunities for upsets to happen. It will be very interesting to see what this bracket looks like after a couple of races. Who is your favorite to win this weekend and why? Who has been dominant here in the past? Jeff: Denny Hamlin is Pocono's all-time wins leader — yes, all-time, not just among active drivers — with seven victories. That's almost too easy, and he's a heavy favorite after going win-win-second in the three Next Gen races there. Oh, what's that you say? You're not seeing a win for Hamlin in 2022? That's because he got disqualified for a very minor infraction (still illegal, but minor) after winning that year. For betting purposes, you need to view it as a win. But again, that seems like a pretty obvious pick, so if you're looking for slightly better value? Perhaps go with William Byron, who is Pocono's all-time leader in average finish despite never actually winning there. He has +800 odds. Jordan: That William Byron doesn't have another win or two or three this season is surprising, considering how dominant he's been at times. He's due, overdue, to finally get that second victory, and Pocono represents a great place to do it. He's finished in the top 10 in over 50 percent of his starts here, and this is one of those tracks where the best teams in a given season tend to shine. Also, don't be surprised if Kyle Larson puts a tough few weeks behind him by putting a classic No. 5-team stomping on the field where he sweeps the stages, leads a ton of laps and rolls to the win. Who is a long shot you like here? Jeff: Pocono is the type of race where we could see an upset if fuel mileage plays out the right way. But that doesn't help you much, because there are a lot of people to choose from in that regard. A better play might be to see if you can parlay a couple of plus-money top-10 picks together. Like, is it a stretch to think AJ Allmendinger (+10000 to win) and Michael McDowell (+20000) could both be in the top 10? Not at all. So maybe play around with that and see if you can come up with a combination that might work. After all, it would have been a great strategy last week when John Hunter Nemechek and Cole Custer landed surprising top-10s in Mexico City. Jordan: Legacy Motor Speedway has shown considerably more speed in its cars recently, and if this speed is again present on Sunday, Erik Jones at +8000 makes for a great sleeper pick. Among active drivers, he has the fifth-most top-five finishes and seventh-best average finish, and with Pocono being a track known for long green-flag runs, the opportunity could be there for LMC to gamble with a Hail Mary strategy to score an upset win. Feeney dominates Darwin to hit four straight race wins
Broc Feeney has continued his dominance at Hidden Valley Raceway, winning back-to-back races from pole in Darwin to extend his lead at the top of the Supercars standings. The Triple Eight speedster seems unstoppable at the moment. With his third and fourth consecutive race wins on Saturday, his championship gap over teammate Will Brown has opened up to 143 points. In a controlled performance in the day's second race, Feeney held onto the lead from the jump, setting a new Darwin lap record of one minute 7.523 seconds in the process. After pitting last, the 22-year-old used his fresh supersoft tyres to speed away from Anton De Pasquale in the final laps and hold onto a one second lead. De Pasquale's second-place finish was his first podium of the season and Grove Racing rookie Kai Allen picked up his first career podium in third. But Grove could be in for a team penalty after one of his crew members dropped a tyre in pit lane, sparking a post-race investigation from the stewards. De Pasquale and Allen both slipped behind Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne after pitting later, but jumped back into the top three with fresher tyres. Cam Waters, who started in third, lacked pace and slipped back through the pack before an off on turn one with two laps to go sent him back to 10th. Brown recovered 10 places to finish in seventh after starting in 17th. Feeney's two wins continued his love affair with Hidden Valley, including winning both races in 2024 and another the year earlier. He earlier held off Tickford's Waters to win race 17 as carnage unfolded behind. It took just one turn for the first big shunt of the race to bring out the safety car. Wheel contact from James Golding fired Jaxon Evans into the barrier at the exit of turn one at high speed, dislodging his front wheel and ruling his car out of the rest of the day's action. Seconds later, a tangle between Nick Percat and Richie Stanaway left the PremiAir Racing man with heavy damage, while Ryan Wood's Ford Mustang suffered engine failure and was left immobile. Brown also had a disappointing race race 17, finishing in eighth Feeney leads the race for the Darwin Triple Crown trophy on 160 points, with another 140 points up for grabs in Sunday's 200km race. Unlike previous seasons where the Crown was only awarded to a driver who won a clean sweep, whoever amasses the most points over the course of the weekend will claim the prize. RACE 17 RESULTS: 1.
