Moose Wala remembered on 3rd death anniversary, family says justice still eludes

Time of India30-05-2025

Bathinda: A large number of people and fans of slain Punjabi rapper Shubhdeep Singh, also known as
Sidhu Moose Wala
, gathered in Mansa's Moosa village on Thursday to pay tributes to him on his third death anniversary.
A prayer meeting was held at Moose Wala's farmhouse — the site where his mortal remains were consigned to flames.
Moose Wala's mother Charan Kaur and father Balkaur Singh made emotional posts on social media, remembering their son and expressing anger over lack of justice in the case.
Moose Wala, along with two friends, was driving the Black Thar when shooters in two vehicles surrounded the Thar and sprayed bullets, killing him on the spot at Jawaharke village near Mansa on May 29, 2022.
The family alleged that a day prior to his killing, some posts were made on social media making claims about the downsizing of his security, which turned fatal. The family also accused the AAP govt of going slow in delaying justice for his brutal killing.
Holding her newborn Shubhdeep, Moose Wala's mother Charan Kaur became emotional when her husband Balkaur Singh, in his address at the meet, said that every day went like a year in the last three years as they suffered immensely after losing their son.
Singh said he would continue fighting for justice.
Charges have been framed against all 27 accused in the case, including Lawrence Bishnoi, in a court of Mansa session judge HS Grewal under various sections, including murder, on May 1, 2024. The case is at the evidence stage, as Balkaur Singh is yet to record his statement as a witness.
A number of songs by Moose Wala have been released posthumously.

Balkaur Singh, a couple of days ago, expressed his willingness to contest the 2027 Punjab assembly elections to get justice for his son, saying that with power in hand, he could fight for justice more aggressively. He is expected to contest from the Mansa assembly constituency, from where his son unsuccessfully contested in 2022. Balkaur Singh slammed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of not doing enough to control crime and stated that his political entry would be centred on seeking justice, restoring public safety, and speaking up for those who are being silenced.

IAS officer, her husband, and personal security officer booked for attempt to murder in Jalandhar

An FIR has been registered in the case where a plot owner was shot by the personal security officer (PSO) of IAS officer Babita Kaler on Saturday morning in a posh locality near PIMS Hospital in Jalandhar. The FIR was lodged late Saturday night at Police Station Division No. 7. The FIR names senior IAS officer Babita Kaler, her husband and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Stephen Kaler, and Sukhkaran Singh, the PSO provided by the Punjab Government. The case has been registered under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act. The victim, Harpreet Singh, suffered a bullet injury in his leg. The police have arrested Sukhkaran Singh and taken possession of the weapon used in the incident. A recommendation has also been sent to the police department to suspend Sukhkaran Singh. The police will soon present him in court to seek remand for interrogation. Sources said the police were preparing to issue notices to Babita and Stephen Kaler, asking them to join the investigation. Harinder Singh Gill, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated they will determine why the shooting occurred — whether it was necessary or done under pressure – during the interrogation. IAS officer Babita Kaler and her husband Stephen Kaler, who live in the upscale Baradari area, reportedly had a dispute with the owners of the adjacent plot over the dumping of soil. During an altercation, Babita Kaler's PSO Sukhkaran Singh shot the brother of the plot owner. The bullet was fired using a government-issued firearm. AAP leader Stephen Kaler stated that the people who came to dump soil were asked to speak to the plot owner. He said he facilitated the conversation and then went inside the house. However, during this time, the individuals who had come to dump the soil allegedly began arguing with the PSO and used abusive language. They also reportedly tried to assault him, after which the PSO fired in self-defence.

‘War on Drugs': Punjab Cabinet gives formal approval to panel overseeing campaign against drug abuse

Even as the Punjab Cabinet also gave ex-post facto approval for the constitution of the high-powered cabinet sub-committee to intensify the 'War on Drugs' program, the Congress party came down heavily on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of seeking publicity for its 'unsuccessful war against drugs.' On Saturday (June 21, 2025), the Punjab cabinet, in its meeting held in Chandigarh, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, gave ex-post facto approval for the constitution of the high-powered cabinet sub-committee to intensify the 'War on Drugs' program of the State of Punjab. 'This move will further help in day-to-day scrutiny of the ongoing war against drugs, thereby making Punjab free from the menace of drugs and weaning away the youth of the state from this scourge,' said an official statement from the Chief Minister's office. Terming the AAP's war against drugs campaign as unsuccessful, the leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Congress's Partap Singh Bajwa, said, 'The AAP claimed that they successfully disrupted the supply chain of drugs, primarily heroin, during the first phase of the three-month campaign that ended in May. This claim is highly misleading. The drug supply chain remains intact, and Punjabi youth, including women, continue to abuse drugs, with overdose-related deaths still occurring. The AAP government has failed in the first phase of its fight against drugs.' He accused the AAP government of seeking publicity for its unsuccessful war against drugs. 'The AAP appears to be in a rush to prove it has tackled the drug issue. However, the reality on the ground is quite the opposite,' he added. Separately, the cabinet gave a nod to recruit 500 vacant posts of Assistant Superintendents, warders and matrons under the direct recruitment quota in the Jails Department. 'This move will act as a catalyst in further streamlining the functioning of the jails besides helping in making them safe and secure,' added the government statement.
