South Korea President Lee wraps up G7 summit with 'new leap forward in diplomacy'

The Star2 days ago

CALGARY, (Canada)/SEOUL: President Lee Jae Myung wrapped up Wednesday (June 18) his three-day visit to Canada, where he attended the Group of Seven summit as a guest — a milestone his administration has touted as the restoration of South Korea's summit diplomacy.
Before heading back to Seoul, Lee hailed the G7 summit and a flurry of bilateral talks as 'signaling a new leap forward in South Korea's diplomacy,' in a post on his Facebook account.
The trip, which marked Lee's debut on the global stage just two weeks after taking office, served as an opportunity for the new president to reassure South Korea's international partners of its economic and security stability, according to his office.
The G7 Summit offered Lee an early platform to engage with the G7 leaders and other invited heads of state, allowing him to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties while outlining his vision for 'pragmatic diplomacy,' his office said.
According to officials, many of the leaders he met commended South Korea's recent restoration of democratic stability following its domestic political crisis.
"South Korea's summit diplomacy has been fully restored," Wi Sung-lac, director of the presidential National Security Office, told reporters Tuesday.
"Amid the seismic shift in the world's economic security landscape, South Korea actively engaged in discussions over global current affairs while manifesting (South Korea's) visions and roles," he added.
According to the presidential office, Lee delivered remarks twice during the expanded G7 summit session on Tuesday afternoon.
Behind closed doors, Lee's remarks heralded South Korea's vision of seeking international cooperation to make artificial intelligence technology available to all humankind, in line with his campaign pledges.
Lee proposed the idea of turning South Korea into the "leading AI hub" through the so-called "nationwide AI transformation" bolstered by aggressive tax relief, a deregulatory push and a private-sector fund composed of contributions from ordinary citizens.
Lee also noted in his remarks that increased electricity consumption due to the rise of AI highlights the importance of robust energy security and stability in supply chains of energy-related critical minerals.
To achieve this, Lee expressed his determination to seek stronger ties with producers of critical minerals through bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
Related moves are already underway, including South Korea's participation in the Minerals Security Partnership and the launch of a critical minerals dialogue between South Korea and Africa.
Lee also proposed the launch of energy infrastructure with enhanced efficiency, including projects such as the so-called "energy highway," or ultrahigh-voltage direct current transmission cables built underwater.
He also proposed the introduction of microgrids, energy storage systems, and an AI-powered electricity supply system to boost efficiency.
Moreover, as a G7 guest, Lee signed two documents at the summit, which are the Kananaskis Wildfire Charter and the G7 Critical Mineral Action Plan.
"These achievements clearly proved South Korea's status as a 'G7 Plus' country," Wi said, suggesting that Lee's attendance boded well for the Lee administration's efforts to position South Korea for inclusion in a potential expanded G7 forum.
A widely anticipated meeting between Lee and US President Donald Trump did not ultimately occur during his three-day visit, as the US leader abruptly cut short his trip late Monday amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran.
Lee's office said it will continue to seek a one-on-one meeting with Trump at an early date, aiming to inject momentum into ongoing working-level trade talks between Seoul and Washington.
The talks are under growing time pressure, with a 90-day pause on proposed 25 percent "reciprocal" tariffs set to expire on July 9.
One possible venue for a bilateral meeting is the upcoming NATO summit in the Netherlands, scheduled for June 24–25 should both leaders attend. - The Korea Herald/ANN

US favourability tumbles since Trump return

Eighty per cent called Trump arrogant and only 28 per cent found him honest. 21 Jun 2025 04:00pm Donald Trump walks across the tarmac before boarding Air Force One and traveling to the G7 leaders' summit in Canada on June 15, 2025 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. - AFP photo WASHINGTON - The image of the United States has deteriorated sharply in much of the world since President Donald Trump's return, with low marks both on his character and policies, a global survey said Wednesday. The Pew Research Centre found that favourability of the United States has dropped in 15 of the 24 countries surveyed. (Photo by Mandel NGAN / AFP) Trump received his lowest marks in neighbouring Mexico, which he has long disparaged and pressed on migration, with 91 per cent of Mexicans saying they did not have confidence Trump would do the right thing on world affairs. Trump led to a downward shift in perceptions of the United States as a whole. In both Mexico and fellow neighbour Canada, which Trump has provocatively said should be the 51st US state, majorities now see the United States unfavourably after seeing the country favourably last year when Joe Biden was president. Views of the United States also darkened in most of Europe, with an especially sharp drop in Poland, a frontline ally of Ukraine, as Trump reduces US support for Kyiv and seeks a negotiated solution with Russia. Sweden, which entered NATO under Biden in the wake of the Ukraine invasion, gave the worst marks to the United States among all publics surveyed, with 79 per cent having a negative opinion of the country. The survey found that on average majorities from all countries surveyed disagreed with all of Trump's key global policies including on Ukraine, Gaza, immigration and climate change. Eighty per cent called Trump arrogant and only 28 per cent found him honest. Not as bad as first term Israel, which has enjoyed robust support from its ally in the Gaza war, had the most favourable opinion of the United States at 83 per cent, a notch higher under Trump. Views of the United States remained positive in Nigeria and Kenya -- which historically have given high marks to the United States no matter who is president -- and India saw little change, with more than half seeing the United States favourably. Since returning to office, Trump has pursued one of the most sweeping agendas of any US president which has included eviscerating foreign aid and aggressively deporting migrants. Nonetheless, the global perceptions of Trump, while negative, were not as bad as they were in 2017 when he first entered the White House. Trump in the first term succeeded Barack Obama, who remained wildly popular in most of the world. This time, he followed Joe Biden, whose marks were similar to Trump's globally on the issue of the economy, according to Janell Fetterolf, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center. The past decade has also seen the growing normalization of right-wing populists. In Brazil, which Trump's ideological ally Jair Bolsonaro led from 2019 through 2022, Trump has the confidence this year of 34 per cent of the public -- low, but well above the 14 per cent he had when he started his first term. Across the world, Trump consistently enjoyed more support from men than women and was seen more favoubly by people on the right of the political spectrum. But the study also showed the limits of his international appeal. In both Sweden and France, Trump failed to win confidence of a majority of backers of far-right nationalist parties, although they were more supportive than the general public. The annual survey contacted 28,333 adults across 24 countries between January and April. - AFP More Like This

Indonesia president denies G7 snub in Russia visit

SAINT PETERSBURG: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday denied snubbing the G7 summit to visit Russia, in a speech at an economic forum alongside Vladimir Putin. The former general declined an invitation to the G7 in Canada earlier this week in favour of talks with Putin in Saint Petersburg — a decision that raised concerns about Jakarta moving closer to Moscow. Speaking at Russia's landmark economic forum on Friday, Prabowo played down the decision. "I was asked why I did not attend the G7, but I attended the Saint Petersburg Forum 2025," he said. "It's not because I did not respect the G7, it's because I gave my commitment to attend this forum before they invited me," Prabowo told the event's plenary session, where he sat next to Putin on stage. "That's the only reason. So please don't read too much into the event... We want to be friends with everybody," he added. Prabowo and Putin held talks a day earlier, both hailing ties and calling for increased cooperation. Indonesia maintains a neutral foreign policy, walking the diplomatic tightrope between regional competitors Beijing and Washington. However, Prabowo has sought to diversify Jakarta's alliances instead of relying solely on Western partners, causing anxiety that he could deviate from the traditional non-aligned foreign policy. Closer ties with Moscow have sparked concern in Indonesia's neighbour Australia.
