The screenshots on her phone tell the story of the Rockingham incident last month. Dozens of sexist and disgustingly sexual comments. One Instagram direct message told her she should hang herself.
Some of the more tame comments call her a 'DEI hire', a 'drama queen', that she belongs in a kitchen.
The crime? Getting rear-ended by another driver who was going too fast into a corner, spinning her out, and sending her into the side of a NASCAR legend at a track that hasn't seen a stock car race in 21 years.
Clearly, they don't know Katherine Legge. They don't know the two-and-a-half decade long career that's taken her from karting, to becoming the fastest woman at the Indianapolis 500 and now, to NASCAR.
No, the mere existence of a woman in the sport offends the internet's sensibilities. Katherine Legge has fought and driven too hard and too long to care about your jibes.
You don't get to NASCAR, arguably the most contact-heavy form of top-flight racing in the world, by backing down from fights. Legge's done it her whole life. Now, she's sharing her story to a younger audience in the form of a children's book while working to prove she's worthy of a full-time drive.
The native of Haslemere, Surrey began in British open-wheel racing in Formula Three, Formula Renault and Formula Ford. Legge was the first woman to ever achieve pole in a Zetec race and even broke a lap record achieved by eventual F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
However in 2004, Legge's career hit the first of many similarly shaped road blocks: financing troubles.
As the story goes, Legge went to the UK offices of auto engineering firm Cosworth and refused to leave until she met with company boss Kevin Kalkhoven. After eventually meeting her, Kalkhoven gave her a seat with Polestar Motor Racing in the first three rounds of the 2005 Toyota Atlantic Championship.
Legge repaid the favor by winning the first race of the series. She'd go on to win twice more and finished third in the championship standings.
That same year, Legge would reach rarified air by testing a Formula One car - with Minardi giving her the opportunity roughly a month after the Italian outfit ran its last ever race at the 2005 Chinese Grand Prix, eventually being bought by Red Bull and becoming Toro Rosso.
Her career then took her to the Champ Car circuit, then to DTM, before jumping into an IndyCar seat in 2012 with Lotus Dragon Racing.
Legge scored a career-best finish in the Indianapolis 500 in her first attempt, climbing from a 30th place qualifying spot to finish 22nd in her rookie year.
However, the slow Lotus engines needed replacing mid-season and her drive became inconsistent - with Dragon only using one car per race after the Indy 500 for the rest of the 2012 season.
She'd return in 2013 with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Team Pelfrey - once again climbing up the grid from a qualifying spot of 33rd to finish 26th.
Further Indy 500 starts followed in 2023 and 2024 after stints in various other circuits - most notably IMSA and Formula E plus a run in the 24 Hours of Daytona. However, Legge failed to finish either race due to a crash in 2023 and an engine failure in 2024.
There remained hope for her to return to the Indy 500 this year, however, she was unable to secure a seat for 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing'.
'I had never been a driver that brought sponsors to a team,' Legge revealed at a sit-down interview in the New York offices of the Daily Mail.
'I'd always been a driver that got either hired by the team or the manufacturer, or somebody had called me, or I'd called them and they wanted me in the team. And so it was [2023] with Bobby [Rahal] that e.l.f. came on board, and that's how that started the ball rolling when they were like, "This is cool. We want to do more of this. We want to be primary. We want to do this massive activation at Indy. We want to do the drone show."
'And it took on a life of its own, which was super neat to see because it really did start that girl power movement that I'd been trying to do for two decades. I'd been helping other young drivers come up through.
'So I really want to do more Indy 500s. It's in my blood. But I also want to do all the things that make me uncomfortable again, that I want to do, that I can look back and go, I did NASCAR, I did this.'
After an absence from the Brickyard, Legge returned in 2023 but suffered a crash in the race
With IndyCar out of the picture, NASCAR beckoned. Legge was able to bring over her partnership with cosmetic company e.l.f. for a string of races in the Xfinity Series and the top-flight Cup Series.
While she'd dipped her toes in the pond with NASCAR before, 2025 is her first true season in stock car racing.
Race 1 was a Cup series drive with Live Fast Motorsports in the fourth race of the season at Phoenix.
A spin ended a race where Legge admits she made 'a couple of bad mistakes' - noting that the lack of practice doesn't allow her to get the best acquainted with a track or the car.
Then came Rockingham. After starting 31st, Legge says she was 'holding my line' going into a turn at the course that saw its first action since the fall of 2004.
As the leaders passed her, Legge says the driver behind her - William Sawalich - took too much speed into the turn and rear-ended her, spinning her car.
Kasey Kahne - a former Cup series Rookie of the Year, and 18-time Cup Series winner, and voted as one of the 75 greatest NASCAR drivers of all time - was making his first start in NASCAR since 2018. When Legge spun, Kahne didn't have time to react and hit the front end of her car. Kahne and Sawalich finished the race (14th and 25th respectively), but Legge did not.
Legge says, 'had the spin not taken Kasey Kahne out, it would have been a non-issue... but the fact that it did probably is what started a barrage of... dislike from the fans, let's say, which is good because at least they're passionate right?'
Passion is what drives the sport. It's what makes it entertaining. But passion goes too far.
Legge says that she found some of the sexist remarks 'funny', saying she laughed at some of the more ridiculous ones. She even says she got sent Venmo requests for money, but doesn't exactly know why.
'It doesn't bother me because I'm thick skinned,' she tells Daily Mail. 'I've been the only girl in racing for two decades.
'I know that people like Bubba [Wallace], and Denny [Hamlin], and Joey [Logano], and all those guys get the same thing. I think the difference is just with some of the ones that I got, they were very directed at my appearance on my body or my sexuality... It was amazing to me what makes people think these things up.'
Legge revealed the death threats she received in an episode of her podcast, 'Throttle Therapy'. Rather than be seen as complaining, Legge says she brought these up to voice the concerns of young girls - currently and in the future - who may come across similar abuse.
'We did that podcast episode and we commented on it and we brought it to light because whilst I might be thick skinned enough that it's like water off a duck's back, I don't know that if I was me 20 years ago, whether it would have been the same thing, right?,' Legge remarked.
'I don't know whether the girls coming up through, maybe that's a barrier to them because it's a lot. I just think that it's a factor of social media today, which I didn't necessarily have when I was first starting out, so I didn't get to see or experience of that.
'But this generation, I don't know whether they're hardened to it or whether it is something that bothers them and gets under their skin. I mean, it's a form of bullying at the end of the day, and I think that it's unacceptable.
'The fact people are anonymous and behind a keyboard makes them think that it's okay to type this stuff. But I can tell you not one person has said it to my face. So I think it's worth calling out.'
Legge also wants to highlight that other drivers aren't held to the same standard. She pointed out one driver, a rookie like herself, spinning and noted how 'everybody gives him a break'.
But when the Rockingham incident occurred, 'Somehow that was my fault because people said I was going too slowly in the middle of the corner. No, the closing speed looked so bad because he drove in way too quickly.'
Legge looked to bounce back from Rockingham at the next week's race at the venerated Talladega Superspeedway - considered one of the greatest tracks in NASCAR.
She was running in the top-ten for most of the race until Aric Almirola looked to make a pass, came across the front of her car, and wrecked them both.
After the race, Almirola admitted fault, saying 'she didn't do anything wrong, not at all, she's holding her line and she was there - I turned across her nose.'
The following week at Texas, she finished her first race on the circuit - crossing the line 32nd after getting lapped due to taking damage.
'I've been hit, I think, in every single NASCAR race. And there's a lot more contact in NASCAR that I have to get my head around to get used to,' she admitted.
Legge also says that her lack of experience with the cars puts her at a disadvantage to drivers who take part in a full calendar: 'They know the car like the back of their hand. It's part of them. They become one with the car.
'And so for me to jump straight in, I think we showed relatively fast speed.'
Even with a career as experienced as hers, Legge says there's still circuits and races she's dying to try - such as Mount Panorama and the Bathurst 1000 in Australia.
'I think I've got a few good years left in me yet,' says Legge - who will turn 45 this year. She says she's 'fitter and stronger than I've ever been.'
Throughout the discussion with her, Legge shared the ups of her career as well as the frustrations. The desire to keep racing has led her to racing disciplines of many kinds, but a lack of sponsorships has kept her from consistently sticking with one circuit or style.
Knowing the 'boys club' that is auto racing, it's not the wildest jump to think that the financial hardship and lack of consistency from team owners could be due to the fact that Legge is a woman.
She quickly and flatly denies this: 'Not at all. I think racing is really hard, no matter who you are - black, white, male, female, it doesn't matter.'
Legge points to the growing female audience in motorsports as a sign of change. She also says that being a woman in the sport serves as a 'unique selling point', but that it goes 'for you and against you'.
'I'm just really fortunate that people have given me the opportunity to go out there and learn and showcase. Hopefully then, I can prove myself enough that one of the top teams does think that it's commercially viable and we're going to get the results for them,' Legge says.
She continues: 'Throughout my whole career, it's been like scrapping and fighting and scratching my way into opportunities.
'I would love to have been with a Penske or a Ganassi or somebody like that for the whole time. And then you really see what you're capable of, right? Because I think it's really hard to judge people when they're not in that situation.'

Furious homeowners who paid up to £735k for their dream homes on a luxury new-build estate have blasted developers for leaving them living on 'a building site' - years after moving in. The prestigious The Willows development in Darlington, County Durham, promised 'executive living' with detached four and five-bed homes starting from £520,000. Despite construction starting five years ago – and the final home completed in April – swathes of the award-winning 59-home estate remain in a state of disarray. Its affluent residents say what was sold to them in glossy brochures as a prestigious, high-spec lifestyle has instead become a frustrating ordeal, with unfinished roads, open trenches, exposed cabling, and missing street lighting plaguing the estate. They accused developer Story Homes of shifting its focus to other multi-million pound projects having sold the last of its 2,500 sq ft homes. Mike Darrie, 59, paid more than half-a-million pounds to be the first person to move onto the exclusive estate in the sought-after West Darlington area in 2020. He claims to have spent thousands replacing tyres, wheels and an exhaust on his two BMWs, which he says were destroyed by exposed ironworks on unfinished roads. Mr Darrie told MailOnline: 'Every wheel on one car is ruined, and three on the other are damaged, and we try and park very carefully. Homeowners have been left frustated with unfinished roads, open trenches, exposed cabling, and missing street lighting plaguing the estate 'My car's has had three sets of tyres on it. It's only done 30,000 miles. It's about £500 for two tyres. 'I rang Story the other day and they more or less told me to f*** off. They're not just interested. 'It's an absolute s***show, it's horrendous. 'The road is like a four-wheel drive track. I've joked that we'll have a motocross circuit here shortly if things don't change. 'I paid half a million quid for a house - I didn't sign up to get car damage. 'That car was brand new last year and those wheels aren't cheap. And I'm not paying for them. I will take legal action against them.' Pointing to an exposed drain on an unfinished pavement, directly outside his five-bed home, Mr Darrie added: 'It doesn't matter how much the houses are. If it's £100,000 or £500,000 we shouldn't be left living on a building site.' Story Homes promised a collection of vast family homes 'all built to our most prestigious specification' which 'combine exceptionally spacious and modern interiors with external character and traditional features.' Residents have accused developer Story Homes of shifting its focus to other multi-million pound projects having sold the last of its 2,500 sq ft homes While homeowners say their houses have been built to exacting standards - for which they praised Cumbria-based Story - less can be said for the surrounding land. Complaints have been made over holes in pavements, unfinished footpaths and unconnected street lighting that has left some houses in complete darkness at night. Richard Hodson and his wife Karen, both 65, paid £715,000 to secure a five-bed property, thought to be among the most expensive on the estate. They moved from Solihull, in the West Midlands, in February 2022 after falling in love with the home's secluded location. Metal fences lie yards from their front door, preventing access to a footpath to the main road that has yet to be completed. Mr Hodson said: 'We chose probably the most expensive house on the development because of this spot. 'We were all expecting it to be finished in June 2023 and here we are in June 2025, and they're only just getting around to completing it. 'I'm quite a patient person, but I think everyone here is cheesed off now. We've been adversely affected by the raised ironworks in the road. It hasn't done our tyres or our cars any good. Mr Hodson and his wife Karen, both 65, praised Story for the quality of the 'desirable' houses but said they had become frustrated with the lack of progress to complete the development 'We're only just starting to see some progress, and that's largely down to campaigning by people who live here. 'Until everything gets finally finished, we can't properly enjoy it.' The couple praised Story for the quality of the 'desirable' houses but said they had become frustrated with the lack of progress to complete the development. Mr Hodson added: 'Many people are very, very pleased with the quality of the build of their house. 'Story had a lot of goodwill attached to this development, but unfortunately, much of that - if not all of it - has evaporated in the last two years.' In 2022, Story Homes landed an award for the best residential development in Co Durham for its transformation of The Willows. One homeowner said: 'It's almost as if they won the award and then they walked away.' Story Homes insisted it remains committed to completing the outstanding work and has apologised to residents - blaming 'unforeseen technical challenges and ecological requirements' for the delays. When our reporters visited the development this week, subcontractors had returned to the site to Tarmac pavements and clear rubble after being shamed in local newspaper coverage. One resident had described the new-build estate to the Northern Echo a 'diabolical health hazard'. Jane Thirling, 56, and husband Stephen, 61, moved onto the estate three years ago. Outside their home, workmen were using diggers to excavate a vast mound of soil that failed to resemble original landscape designs. Mrs Thirling said: 'There was meant to be a lovely open space outside our house - we've even still got the housing brochure showing what it was meant to look like. 'My husband's been talking to the council for a year and a half to try and get this sorted out. 'Before this week no-one was on site for five weeks and I think that was the final straw for a lot of people. 'Some people have been living on here for more than five years and they have had enough. 'It takes the sheen off moving into a new home. We've been here three and a half years, we shouldn't still be living on a building site. 'We shouldn't still have metal railings outside our house, when we were promised they'd be gone in six months.' Mr Thirling also accused Darlington Council of failing to stand up for residents and hold Story Homes and its subcontractors to account. He said: 'For me, the fundamental issue is with the council. 'Once the last house is sold, there's no real incentive left for the developer to spend money. 'The council were happy enough to start collecting our council tax but not happy enough to enforce the agreements they had with the developer. 'There's been a lack of transparency and a lack of reliable communication from anybody about what's going on. 'I was a project manager, I know things don't go perfectly. But when it goes wrong, don't treat people with contempt.' Mr Thirling said he would like to see rules changed that would only enable town halls to collect council tax when a development is completed in line with planning agreements. He said: 'It would focus everyone's attention – both the council and the developer. 'They've been collecting the council tax since we moved in and we're still waiting for what we paid for. 'How they won an award for this, God knows.' Story Homes, which is embarking on a similar homebuilding project in affluent Wilmslow in Cheshire, said final works were delayed due to 'unforeseen technical challenges and ecological requirements'. A spokesperson said: 'We have apologised to residents for the inconvenience this has caused. 'We remain fully committed to completing the outstanding works. 'This includes ongoing liaison with Darlington Borough Council to approve final road surfacing, footpath improvements, street light installation and final clearance of the site compound. 'We are taking clear steps to move the development forward and continue to provide regular updates to residents, who we thank for their continued patience and feedback.' The council insisted: 'Darlington Borough Council is not holding up anything on site.' A spokesperson for Story Homes said: 'We acknowledge the concerns raised and would like to reassure residents that we remain fully committed to completing the outstanding works at The Willows as soon as possible. 'Delays have occurred due to unexpected engineering challenges and environmental considerations, including the need for further investigation into a specific section of road surfacing, following a recent visit by Darlington Borough Council. 'In addition to completing the road surfacing, we are prioritising the completion of footpaths, street lighting, and clearance of fenced and compound areas, with work progressing in close coordination with the council, utility providers, and our contractors. All remaining works are expected to be completed by the end of summer. 'We understand the disruption this has caused and sincerely apologise for this. Residents continue to receive regular updates from our business, and we remain grateful for their patience and ongoing feedback as we work to deliver a high quality completed development.'

Why I love tools (and not just for fixing my cars)

I am going to talk cars in a moment, I promise, but it's front of mind: the other week I had to put up a gatepost. Or rather two of them, joined back to back, at a pretty normal height of 1.5m but overall a hefty 20cm by 40cm thick. I knew I'd need tools for this. In no definitive order, I needed a tape measure, T-square, spirit level, sledgehammer, ratchet strap, chainsaw, drill (with a very long bit), spanner (preferably ratchet), club hammer and crosshead screwdriver and coach bolts. If I'd been missing any single item, the job would have gone, by varying degrees, from slightly more difficult to nearly impossible. And had I been missing anything, I wouldn't have tried it, and the only tool I'd have used instead would have been a telephone. If there's something I find utterly exasperating (I'll admit that's quite a lot of things these days), it's not being able to do a job because I'm missing the right kit. And so as a result: I love tools. It's not so much that I adore the tools themselves, not in the way I love cars. I don't spend hours poring over the Screwfix or Machine Mart websites in the way I might the Caterham or Indian motorcycle configurators. I don't lovingly polish my trolley jack of an evening [I've tried various tools there to find one that doesn't sound too much like a euphemism]. I just love what tools allow me to do. Although, given that they're tools, perhaps by definition that amounts to the same thing. If the feeling is analogous to the one I get from cars, it's that tools provide a sense of freedom. I can make things, and I'll enjoy it. I can repair things, and while I might not enjoy it because it gets in the way of a cup of tea and an episode of Yellowstone, I have options on how, when and perhaps how affordably a fix will happen. And maybe I'll learn something on the way, too. And without tools, there are some things I simply wouldn't have: a greenhouse, a stocked woodshed, a sim rig for Gran Turismo, a dining room table that will outlive me, two modified cars and a motorcycle that lives in a shelter I made for it.

The brains behind the Yo-Go buggies is Samuel Bailey. The automotive engineer wanted to give Londoners an alternative to the expensive electric car and found the answer in China, where the buggies are built by a company called Marshell. Each has a small 5kWh battery powering a 4kW electric motor and giving a range of 30 miles. Charging is via London's lamp-post network or a roof-mounted solar panel, which, after a day's sunshine, can provide a six-mile top-up. However, for all its clever electronics, a Yo-Go buggy is still a golf cart, right? In fact, the vehicle is homologated for UK roads, so it's now classified as an L6e quadricycle. Its body has been redesigned, too, to make it more practical and weatherproof. Even so, my fear of being the laughing stock of the capital's road users is not helped by the sight of my test buggy awaiting me at Yo-Go's Parsons Green parking spot. The small vehicle looks only a couple of rungs up the evolutionary ladder from the rickshaws that clog London's West End. And what city needs yet another electric 'personal mobility' solution? My scepticism isn't helped by the buggy's questionable weather protection, its basic plastic interior (although the two seats look comfortable) and its twin rear-mounted boots, which can't be locked. At least the foot pedals marked 'Stop' and 'Go' appear to be foolproof and, save for indicators and a windscreen wiper, there are few extras to distract the inexperienced driver. Driving the buggy is just a case of 'unlocking' it, belting up, selecting D for drive and pressing the Go pedal. Thanks to its low weight, the buggy surges forward effortlessly; helped by fairly aggressive brake regen, it stops easily too. Independent front suspension absorbs the worst of the area's battered roads, and although the buggy is narrow, its track is just wide enough to clear speed cushions.
