Corruption-accused Mapisa-Nqakula changes lawyers; case postponed to June
JOHANNESBURG - Disgraced former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has changed lawyers in her corruption matter before the Pretoria High Court.
She made a brief appearance in the dock on Friday, where she faces 12 counts of fraud and money laundering.
The former Speaker allegedly received R4.5 million in kickbacks from a contractor when she was defence minister.
She's maintained her innocence, claiming the charges were politically motivated.
Mapisa-Nqakula returned to the dock on Friday morning, taking a seat right at the centre and keeping her head down until her matter was called.
Her lawyer, Advocate Graham Kerr-Philips, told the court that they would no longer be on the case.
"We appear to inform your lordship that our attorney's mandate has been withdrawn, so we are here to withdraw with your lordship's consent and to hand over to those who will take over from us."
After Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed the changes, her new lawyer, Advocate Cronje Kriel, came on record.
"We have been briefed, we have been in contact with our learned colleagues."
At the same time, the court is yet to receive the outcome of representations made by Mapisa-Nqakula's lawyers to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi.
The matter has been postponed to June.

Four men sentenced to long-term imprisonment after murdering woman for funeral policy money
CAPE TOWN - An adoptive father of a mentally disabled woman and three hitmen have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment after murdering the woman for funeral policy money. The four men were sentenced in the Knysna High Court on Friday. Mboneleli Msila was handed two life sentences for masterminding the murder of his adopted daughter, 22-year-old Nosipho Mafana in Plettenberg Bay. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says Mboneleli Msila says hitman Monde Tshemese will also serve two life sentences for his role in Mafana's murder. "Msila arranged for Mafana to take out three funeral policies with three different banks which would pay out an amount of R600,000 if she died an unnatural death." Ntabazalila says Msila and Tshemese planned Mafana's murder along with Mbulelo Jack and Lungisile Lucas. Jack and Lucas were sentenced to 17 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and 17 years for murder. After Mafana's murder in April 2022 Msila's claim for the policy was rejected after it became the subject of a police investigation.

'She is still alive': Joslin Smith hope renewed
The National Prosecuting Authority has renewed hope that little Joslin Smith is still alive despite being missing for over a year. The Salanha Bay girl's disappearance has sparked a national, and even international, rescue effort. Her mother, Kelly Smith, and two others – Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn – have since been convicted and sentenced for kidnapping and child trafficking. Speaking in a webinar this week, NPA prosecutor Zelda Swanepoel shared her beliefs about Joslin Smith. Earlier this month, Swapepoel helped the state to convict Joslin's mother, Kelly Smith, the latter's boyfriend, Jacquin 'Boeta' Appollis, and their pal, Steveno van Rhyn. A life sentence for trafficking and kidnapping was handed down by Western Cape High Court judge, Nathan Erasmus. She said of the search for the missing girl: 'We have done a comprehensive search in Saldanha of all the exhibits. 'Everything that was found in all of those dunes, all the bones, all the clothing, was analysed, there were no positive DNA results found on anything. She continued: 'I'm convinced that she is still alive. However, I don't know where she is. I can only hope we find her.' Will Kelly Smith ever reveal where her daughter Joslin is? The Saldanha Bay girl went missing on 19 February 2024. Images via YouTube screenshot: SABC Swanepoel added that Joslin's case was the first prosecution she had worked on where the missing child had not been found. She added that much of the case hung on the state witness Lourentia Lombaard. The NPA was also banking on the possibility that Joslin's mother would testify. 'We were always hopeful during the trial that the accused would come and testify in the main trial. The plan was to destroy their credibility and demonstrate the improbabilities in their versions. Yes, their decision to remain silent, especially Kelly, was very disappointing,' she added. Meanwhile, Joslin's mother Kelly Smith as well as Appollis and van Rhyn have filed their notices this week for leave to appeal their convictions and sentences. The NPA are also awaiting the fate of the state witness Lourentia Lombaard, whose verdict will be announced by Judge Erasmus at an appointed date. A 204 inquiry will determine if Lombaard will be granted indemnity based on her testimony. If the court does find that Lombaard did not testify truthfully, she could face prosecution for perjury and related charges. Lombaard previously stated under oath that Joslin's mother, Kelly Smith, allegedly sold her to a sangoma for R20 000. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Next Stay Close ✕ He indicated that this process aims to determine whether to establish a new political party, independent of the MK party. This move follows recent reports by IOL of the MK Party's decision to exclude Shivambu from its parliamentary list, a move that Shivambu criticised publicly. In removing Shivambu from his position as the party's SG, the MK party cited Shivambu's unauthorised visit to Prophet Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi as a breach of party protocol. However, Shivambu dismissed the party's reasons, claiming he was demoted because he had questioned the embezzlement of R7 million from the party's funds. 'I was redeployed for daring to speak out against corruption within the party. Despite this, I remain committed to serving the people and will not leave the MK party.' 'I am exploring the possibility of forming a new political entity that reflects our shared values," Shivambu stated during the briefing. He further indicated that he would proceed with the potential formation of a new political platform, emphasising that his actions are motivated by a desire to promote transparency and accountability in South African politics.
