Incredible photos from the National Geographic Traveller competition

An intimate portrait of a Vietnamese woman sitting next to her great-granddaughter in a dark, smoky room as she works on some embroidery has won the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2025.
Taken in Vietnam's Lào Cai province by UK-based photographer Justin Cliffe, the winning image was selected from thousands of entries and described by judges as portraying a 'moment between generations that captures so much beauty and humanity.'
'The colours, light and textures work really well,' the judges added in a press release Thursday.
The art of embroidery has been passed down multiple generations of Red Dao minority people in Vietnam, according to National Geographic.
Other category winners include a captivating image of an eye-like geothermal pool in Iceland, a family-run eatery in Tibet and a thrilling chance-encounter between a Bonelli's eagle and a fox in Spain.
The annual competition aims to highlight the best travel photos from around the globe taken by UK and Ireland-based photographers, both amateurs and professionals.
Cliffe's prize-winning image was chosen from six category winners across the themes of landscape, people, wildlife, food, city life and portfolio.
'Our competition goes from strength to strength, with this year's easily one of the strongest yet,' Pat Riddell, editor of National Geographic Traveller (UK), said in the release.
'Capturing everything from the dramatic landscapes of Iceland and Italy to incredible wildlife shots in Spain and Canada, the 18 finalists – who made the cut from thousands of entries – have really elevated the level of travel photography with their ingenuity and skill,' Riddell added.

'They will never be forgotten': Armed forces flag raised above town hall

The armed forces flag was raised above the town hall to mark the beginning of Armed Forces Week. A short service was held this morning Monday (June 23) in Victoria Square to mark the occasion. Reverend Hannah Lane welcomed the crowd for coming to the short service to mark the start of Armed Forces Week. She said: "During the ceremony, the armed forces flag will be raised above the town hall where it will fly proudly until Saturday evening. "At the same time we will also remember those who have served in the armed services in years gone by with such distinction and sacrifice. "And we will think of our service men and women who are serving now, those currently committed overseas, especially those in active service." The gathered crowd was then invited to take part in a two minute silence to remember all those who have died in service. On Saturday, June 28, the council will hold their annual Armed Forces Day event in Victoria Square from 10.30am to 3.30pm with a short service followed by a family fun day with lots of stalls and free activities, such as paintballing.

Shababs fire heroes hurl rocks to save staff as famous curry house engulfed in flames

Brave passers-by helped rescue staff from a fire at a Birmingham famous curry house by hurling stones to break windows. Video stills showed smoke pouring from Shababs - dubbed the "home of the Birmingham Balti" - after a fryer ignited at the restaurant yesterday morning, Sunday, June 22. One man leapt from the first-floor window to escape the blaze and was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and burns at around 11.10am. Witnesses said members of the public threw rocks to shatter the windows before another onlooker fetched a ladder. West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines to the scene in Birmingham's 'Balti Triangle' and discovered the premises to be "significantly smoke-logged". A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Shortly after 11.10am on Sunday 22 June, we responded to Ladypool Road, Birmingham. "Three fire engines responded, crewed by firefighters from Ladywood, Highgate and Hay Mills stations. "The first crew arrived at the scene within two minutes of being mobilised. "This was a fire, believed to have started accidentally, in a two-storey commercial premises used as a restaurant. Both floors were significantly smoke-logged. "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. "One person was helped to safety by members of the public from the building before we arrived. "They are believed to have been conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after presenting symptoms of smoke inhalation. "Four members of the public were checked by paramedics for smoke inhalation and were all discharged at the scene. "The final fire crew left this incident at 2.25pm, with police colleagues still in attendance." Shababs opened in 1987 and is one of Birmingham's best-known Balti Triangle restaurants. It featured on BBC2 in April when Michael Portillo paid a visit and has been visited by YouTubers as well and celebrities such as the Hairy Bikers and Joe Lycett.
