PH waiting for US decision on tariffs
The Philippines is awaiting the United States' decision on its plea for the latter to lower the tariff rates on Philippine goods.
In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque said that there would be 'really no second round (dialogue) for us.'
Last month, Roque, along with Economic Affairs Adviser Frederick Go and Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez, met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and tackled 'mutually beneficial ways to strengthen the bilateral relations' amid the 17% tariff rate imposed by the US.
The trade dialogue was held within the 90-day suspension of US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff policy. The suspension will expire on July 8.
'Everything is a wait-and-see until they put it out… But we don't know what the outcome will be when they give us the verdict,' Roque said.
The Department of Trade and Industry chief, however, expressed confidence that the US will give a favorable decision on the Philippines' tariff plea, 'which is lower than 17%.'
Trump had earlier expressed willingness to extend the suspension of his reciprocal tariff policy for countries with ongoing trade talks with the US.
'Actually, I've heard that also, and that was what was told to us also, that there might be an extension. But, again, there's no [confirmation] yet,' Roque said.
'For now, the tariff is at 10%, which is lower than 17%. So, even with the extension, I feel we should be okay. Yeah, favorable for us because 10%. But, of course, if we really get the tariff lower than 10%, why not? But, again, everything is under negotiation,' she said.
Trump in April announced a sweeping reciprocal tariff policy on its trading partners, including the Philippines, which would be facing a 17% tariff on its exports to the US.
Although it is the lowest among its Southeast Asian peers, still the Philippine government sent a delegation to Washington to seek dialogue with US officials.
Trump had argued that the trading relationship between the US and its trading partners has become 'highly unbalanced,' thus the higher tariffs would be targeted on countries that have significant trade imbalances with America.
In other words, the US leader is trying to level the playing field for American industries by 'reciprocating' what other states are charging them for the goods they are selling in their countries.
Data from the USTR showed that the US goods trade deficit with the Philippines stood at $4.9 billion in 2024, up 21.8% from 2023.
US total goods trade with the Philippines amounted to about $23.5 billion in 2024, with American goods exports to the Philippines amounting to $9.3 billion, up 0.4%, while goods imports totaled $14.2 billion.
The US is the Philippines' top destination for its goods in 2024 at $58.7 billion, accounting for a lion's share, or 80.2%, of the top 10 nations where it exports, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Pope Leo himself has been the target of deep fake videos and audio messages published on social media in recent weeks. An AFP investigation earlier this month identified dozens of YouTube and TikTok pages broadcasting AI-generated messages masquerading as genuine comments from the pope in English or Spanish. A survey from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism this week found significant numbers of young people in particular were using chatbots to get headlines and updates. The Catholic Church has attempted to influence ethical thinking surrounding the use of new technologies in recent years under Leo's predecessor Francis. Filipinos there should consider getting themselves and their dependents repatriated to avoid getting caught in the middle of ongoing clashes, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement. Crisis level 3 or voluntary repatriation phase is imposed by the Philippine government on countries with deteriorating security conditions. At least 30,000 workers, mostly caregivers, are in Israel, and more than 1,000 are in Iran. "All overseas Filipinos in Israel and Iran are enjoined to return to the Philippines," the DFA said. "Travel by Filipinos to both these countries is highly discouraged due to the ongoing crisis and the actual closure of their airspace and seaports." Those who wish to leave were advised by the DFA to contact the embassy to coordinate their repatriation. Security alert advisories, the DFA said, "will be subject to periodic review, taking into consideration the situation on the ground." Israel and Iran have traded missile strikes for a week, trapping civilians and foreign nationals on both sides of the conflict, triggering international alarm. AFP 'stands ready' for possible repatriation of Pinoys in Iran, Israel

REUTERS/ Moshe Mizrahi The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured Friday it is prepared to assist in the possible repatriation of Filipinos in Iran and Israel amid the escalating conflict between the two countries. According to AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla, the Philippine military is closely monitoring the developments in the Middle East, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict. "At this time, our priority is to support the Philippine government's efforts to ensure the safety and possible repatriation of Filipinos in affected areas," said Padilla. "Should the need arise, the AFP stands ready to assist as directed. We will be guided by the decisions and policies of higher civilian authorities in all actions related to this evolving situation," she said. Israel bombed multiple targets in Iran last Friday, calling it a "preemptive strike" to stop the Islamic republic from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran, which maintains that its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not. The exchange of missile attacks between the two countries have already dragged on for seven days. The DFA earlier said 26 Filipinos may be repatriated from Israel this weekend via border crossing into Jordan since flight operations are currently suspended. PH Air Force assets ready Meanwhile, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) also expressed readiness to deploy aircraft and personnel for repatriation efforts. "PAF anticipates and prepares for any eventuality that our assets may be utilized for evacuation," said PAF spokesperson Colonel Ma. Consuelo Castillo. "Normally, we use our C-130s for that purpose," she added. The Philippine government has said it is considering to raise alert levels for Israel and Iran. Israel is currently at Alert Level 2 or restriction, which is issued if there are real threats to the life, security, and property of Filipinos arising from internal disturbance, instability, or external threat. On the other hand, Iran is under Alert Level 1 or precautionary, which is issued when there are valid signs of internal disturbance, instability, and/or external threat to the host country. According to Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, Alert Level 3 or voluntary has yet to be declared but the Philippine government is already active as if both countries are under this status. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
