The Union home minister held a meeting on the cleaning of the Yamuna, ensuring clean drinking water supply and improving sewage systems in Delhi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday directed the concerned ministries and officials to work with a holistic approach for cleaning the Yamuna river, ensuring clean drinking water for the capital's residents and upgrading the city's sewage system.
This was conveyed at a meeting chaired by Shah and attended by Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior officials.
The Union home minister held a meeting on the cleaning of the Yamuna, ensuring clean drinking water supply and improving sewage systems in Delhi, and he directed that the work be done with a holistic approach, an official statement said.
Addressing the meeting, Shah said the Yamuna is not just a river but also a symbol of faith, making its cleanliness a priority for the Modi government.
He said the Ministry of Jal Shakti should develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for all sewage treatment plants (STPs), establishing standards for their quality, maintenance and discharge.
The home minister emphasised that this SOP should also be shared with other states.
He stressed that plans for the Yamuna, drinking water and drainage in Delhi should be made with a 20-year vision.
Shah highlighted the crucial role of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in cleaning the Yamuna and emphasised the need to strengthen it, directing immediate filling of vacant posts.
The home minister underscored the need to enhance Delhi's water distribution efficiency, stating that effective water management is essential to ensure drinking water supply across the city.
He said for water supply in Delhi, the DJB should strengthen the water distribution structure along with preventing leakage in pipelines.
Shah also emphasised the use of world-class technology for desilting drains.
In March, CM Gupta announced a comprehensive Rs 1,500-crore plan to clean the Yamuna river and improve Delhi's sewage infrastructure, an ambitious river rejuvenation effort in the national capital.
The plan includes the construction of 40 decentralised STPs, modernisation of the existing STPs and investment in advanced machinery to tackle waste and pollution, Gupta said in her budget speech in the Delhi Assembly.
In a bid to ensure that untreated sewage does not flow into the Yamuna, the Delhi government plans to build 40 decentralised STPs at a cost of Rs 500 crore.
These plants will treat wastewater at the source before it enters major drains, reducing pollution levels in the river.
Additionally, the government has committed to upgrading the existing STPs to enhance their operational capacity.

Siwan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a roadshow and greeted people at a public meeting in Bihar's Siwan, where he will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects, including in the water, rail, and power sectors. PM Modi greeted Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as he took the stage at a public meeting in Siwan. The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects at Siwan, a major boost to infrastructure and socio-economic development in Bihar, on Friday. Boosting railway infrastructure in the region, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line project worth over Rs 400 crore and flag off a new train service on this route. Additionally, in a major boost to connectivity in North Bihar, the Prime Minister will also flag off the Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah. In a major boost to power infrastructure in the region, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Bihar. Standalone BESSs are being installed at 15 grid substations of the state, including Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah, and Siwan, among others. The capacity of the battery to be installed in each substation is between 20 and 80 MWh. It will save the distribution companies from buying electricity at expensive rates by feeding the already stored electricity back to the grid, directly benefiting the consumers. Prime Minister will also release the first instalment to more than 53,600 beneficiaries of PMAY U in Bihar. He will also hand over keys to a few beneficiaries to mark the Grih Pravesh Ceremony of more than 6,600 completed houses of PMAY U.

Anurag Rastogi gets one-year extension as Haryana chief secretary
The central government has granted a year's extension in service to chief secretary Anurag Rastogi. The 1990-batch Haryana IAS officer, who was due to retire on June 30, will continue to hold the charge of chief secretary till June 30, 2026. A June 19 communication from the Union ministry of personnel said that the central government, on a proposal of the Haryana government, has approved extension of service for Rastogi from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Hindustan Times was the first to report on June 8 that Rastogi would get an extension in service, thus enabling him to continue as chief secretary from July 1. Since Rule 16 (1) of the All-India Service (death cum retirement benefits) Rules, 1958, provided for only six months of extension in service for the chief secretary, the central government relaxed this rule by invoking Rule 3 of All India Service (Conditions of Service- Residuary Matters) Rules, 1960, to grant Rastogi 12 months of extension in service. Rule 3 of All India Service (Conditions of Service- Residuary Matters) Rules, 1960, empowers the central government to dispense with or relax the requirements of a rule or regulations made under All India Services Act, 1951. Rastogi was appointed as chief secretary in February this year after 1989-batch IAS officer Vivek Joshi took voluntary retirement on being chosen as Election Commissioner by the central government. The Nayab Singh Saini government appointed Rastogi as Joshi's successor by not following the seniority principle. According to the gradation list of Haryana IAS officers, Sudhir Rajpal of the 1990 batch is the senior most as per the inter se seniority followed by Sumita Misra, Anurag Rastogi, Anand Mohan Sharan and Raja Sekhar Vundru. A dispute has been raised by the 1990-batch IAS officers regarding the inter-se seniority which remains unadjudicated. Rastogi was also given the interim charge of chief secretary for a few days after the retirement of TVSN Prasad and before Joshi joined as the chief secretary in November 2024. Rastogi was later posted as financial commissioner, revenue (FCR) and also held the charge of additional chief secretary, finance and planning. He still holds the charge of the finance and planning departments.
