HomeBois riding high thanks to one voice, one language
KUALA LUMPUR: Communication has been the driving force behind HomeBois' stunning unbeaten run in the current Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) Professional League Malaysia (MPL MY) season.
Alongside Selangor Red Giants (SRG. OG), HomeBois are one of just two teams with perfect series records.
The only difference being that HomeBois dropped a single game across their four best-of-three matches.
It's a remarkable turnaround from last season, when they finished seventh and missed the playoffs entirely.
A sweeping roster overhaul during the off-season saw only midlaner Irwandy "Izanami" Lim and Ikmal Hakimy "Eyymal" Azemy retained from last year's squad.
New faces include Kenley Nathaniel "Vell" Zefanya (on loan from Indonesia's Evos Icon), Vincent Ivan "Ivann" Adrianto (Evos Holy), and Adam "Melqt" Hamidun (Team Rey).
Irwandy credits improved communication as a key factor behind their strong start, especially with the addition of Indonesian players.
"Last season, we had Filipino imports, so we used English in our comms. That led to miscommunication and costly mistakes," said the Sabahan after their 2-0 win over Team Rey on Saturday.
"This year, it's much smoother. We're all speaking one language — Bahasa — and that really helps."
HomeBois are focused on maintaining momentum with crucial matches against Todak, Team Vamos and SRG. OG on the horizon.
Week 3 of MPL MY began on Friday, with Aero Esports breezing past bottom-placed Ocean Black (OB) 2-0, while Vamos edged DX Soul 2-1.
On Saturday, HomeBois extended their unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win over Team Rey, and SRG. OG continued their dominance with a 2-0 triumph over Todak. Monster Vicious (MV) capped the day by blanking JP Niners 2-0.
Sunday saw DX Soul bounce back with a 2-0 win over Aero, and JP Niners finally claimed their first win by beating OB 2-0.
The week concluded with Vamos staging a comeback to edge MV 2-1.

KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have been advised to continue to communicate openly with their coaches should they face any tension in their collaboration on the court. Liek Hou battles pain to regain Asian singles title after 13 years

The 37-year-old fought hard to beat Indonesian arch-rival Dheva Anrimusthi 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 in the men's singles SU5 (upper body impairment) final in Korat yesterday. In the semi-finals, Liek Hou defeated Suryo Nugroho of Indonesia 21-12, 17-21, 11-8 (rtd). 'After nine months, I'm meeting these Indonesian players again just like at the Paris Paralympics, and I'm glad that I defeated them although I'm not physically at my best,' said the Paris Paralympics champion, who is carrying a leg injury. 'It was quite tough for me, and I still feel the pain in my leg after winning here. I will come back home and get it treated.' It was the Liek Hou's fourth gold in the singles in the Asian meet after also triumphing in 2004, 2008 and 2012. He was a bronze medal winner at the 2016 edition in Beijing. The two-time Paralympic gold medallist then teamed up with Fareez Anuar to easily come out on top over India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi 21-14, 21-8 for the men's doubles SU5 title. Fareez settled for a bronze in the singles after going down 18-21, 9-21 to Dheva in the last four a day earlier.

Liek Hou battles through pain for two Asian Para badminton titles
KUALA LUMPUR: Cheah Liek Hou bagged a brilliant double at the Asian Para Championships once again but not without a major scare in the men's singles final against long-time rival Dheva Anrimusthi in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Sunday. Liek Hou, a two-time Paralympic champion, held his nerve to edge the Indonesian 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 in a tense SU5 final, surviving a late fightback that saw Dheva save four match points before the Malaysian finally sealed it. Despite struggling with a right heel injury, Liek Hou later returned to the court to partner Fareez Anuar and clinch the men's doubles title with a 21-14, 21-18 win over India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi. It marked his 10th career title at the Asian Championships — a quadrennial event last held in 2016 and cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "I picked up the heel injury last year and have been getting treatment since, but I haven't stopped competing," said Liek Hou. "It gets painful after tough tournaments like this, but I'm coping well. Dheva also isn't playing many tournaments right now — we're both focused on the Asian Para Games in Nagoya next year." The latest triumph continues an impressive run for Liek Hou, who also completed the double at the Dubai and Spanish Para Championships earlier this year.
