When Chanel In-House Perfumer-Creator Olivier Polge is creating a perfume, it all comes down to one thing: The scent itself. That's the case for his latest, Chanel Chance Eau Splendide, the fifth scent in the Chanel Chance family. 'My work is not visual,' Polge says. 'The sense of scent is tricky because it's very strong and at the same time it has the weakness of being influenced by the rest. Scent has to go beyond one person or one profile.'
But in the age of social media, people want to experience perfume beyond the olfactive. That's the concept of the new special event at The Grove in Los Angeles, open now through May 18, that celebrates the new Chance Eau Splendide and brings the fragrance to life in different ways beyond the scent. Free and open to the public, guests can explore many elements of the perfume.

'Fragrance is all about emotions,' says Emilie de Tramasure, General Manager of Fragrance and Beauty at Chanel. 'Everybody brings their own emotions to the story, so it's important to give some elements you can follow, a way to experience something where you bring your own expression and your look, but at the same time feel like you're guided in a way to experiment. It's about all senses together—olfactive is one, but you have a very strong visual and communication also. We wanted to express the color that is so youthful and playful. The concept was about playing with all senses, so that whenever you go through it, it is more than just smelling, but evokes different facets. It's like a maze—you bring people, you give them clues, but at the same time you create your own emotional moments.'
The experience at The Grove includes a maze activity, a Chance fortune teller, an opportunity to sniff all five Chance fragrances and plenty of photo ops, including a photo booth and life-sized bottle of Chance Eau Splendide. Guests can even don a pair of violet headphones that match the juice to listen to the earworm 'A Little More,' the song composed for the campaign by Belgian pop star Angéle, who is its face. 'It's something new, with Angéle doing this interpretation of the scent, and she's super excited to be part of that story, and she's bringing a little piece that is so special with the music,' de Tramasure says. As part of the multi-sensory experience, it was important to include music too.

The experience at The Grove is just like Chance eau Splendide itself—fun, flirty, bright and optimistic. Light and luminous, the scent opens with a raspberry accord that floats over the floral heart of rose geranium, mingling with cedar, white musk and iris. Typically, when Polge creates a scent, he creates it from the bottom up. But with Chance Eau Splendide, it was the opposite. When he started on its creation journey, he didn't know initially that he wanted to make a fruity floral. 'When you build a perfume, you build it from the bottom to the top,' he says. 'Here I had the feeling and the intuition that I did it reverse. I saw that this accord of raspberry could take more room and even be the backbone of the scent.'
Chance eau Splendide pays homage to the iterations of Chance that have preceded it while simultaneously being original and unique. The Chance collection have become modern classics. 'When you think about Chance, now it's five different perfumes, five different formulas, but they have in common very fresh and catchy top notes,' Polge says. 'When I was thinking about Chance eau Splendide, I had to find this note that would grasp your attention right away. I ended up building this raspberry accord, which I found interesting, because behind this nice red fruit there are certain undertones of flowers like violet and rose, and so that is the start of a perfume. We always speak about top, middle, bottom [notes], but at the end of the day, that all blends and everything has an effect. Each raw material has an effect on the other and the idea behind the scent was always to bring notes that would not darken the brightness of the scent. Among those notes, the raspberry ended up to be the most important in Chance Eau Splendide.'

The geranium in Chance Eau Splendide is partly grown in the Chanel fields in Grasse. 'For Chanel, we create and manufacture all our perfumes,' Polge says. 'We have quite a traditional way to handle certain raw materials; we make a mix of different origin, with a very specific olfactive profile.' To round out the geranium used in the perfume, they sourced from other places as well. 'We start with the olfactive aspect,' Polge says. 'If it doesn't smell good, we are not interested. We look for a very specific olfactive profile, and then we work to make it fulfill our policies of organic farming and working conditions.'
Chance Eau Splendide was about two years in the making. Though the violet hue was chosen after the scent was completed, it captures what's inside the bottle perfectly. Polge believes that 'since scent is not visual, it expresses something of your personality.' It also fits in perfectly with the rest of the Chance family, which are all pretty pastels. 'If you make the parallel with the visual aspects, they all have something very colorful,' Polge says. 'They are impactful. There is a freshness. Purple fits well, don't you think? There is a little depth to it that I like. This is why color is very important, because it puts a filter on what you will expect it to smell like. And if it's well conceived, the product will have a stronger impact.'

A study in juxtapositions, Chanel Chance Eau Splendide is unique yet also has mass appeal. 'What we like about this fragrance is that you can interpret it in so many different ways, which is a part of the playfulness of Chance as well,' de Tramasure says. 'Olivier keeps the spirit, but brings something new from an olfactive story. This one brings these fresh fruity notes, still true to the spirit of Chance, with these woody notes that makes it new and bold, but also so easy to wear for anyone.'
To celebrate the launch of Chance Eau Splendide and the opening of the experience at The Grove, a dinner was held in Polge's honor at The Beverly Hills Hotel, attending by luminaries and friends of the house. Choosing LA was not by chance. 'LA felt like the perfect location for many reasons,' de Tramasure says. 'First of all, there is something in the spirit of Chance—the concept itself is about seizing opportunities and there is no better place than LA to express that. The second element is the entertainment. People here are expecting that, and we wanted something that would be not just a pop-up and a commercial presence, that is really entertaining, fun and full of surprises. We knew LA would be receptive to that concept of excitement and playfulness, which is part of Chance, but also part of the LA spirit. Also, when we discussed the location, it was around the time of the wildfires, and we wanted to be part of the revival. We felt that's the right place to be at that time, and Chance is a perfect expression. We want to bring optimism to the city.'

Holly says she always thought Sophia would be making that speech and everyone awkwardly moves the conversation forward. They all agree graduation is both exciting and sad. It's the end of an era. Holly tries to comfort Tate, but it makes him uncomfortable. He asks about Jude and just then Sophia grabs her stomach and screams out in pain. She says she thinks she is in labor. They exit to the hospital leaving Aaron and Holly behind to walk. Horton Square: Abe is sitting with Paulina while she practices her graduation speech. She wants to make sure he's good spending a part of their anniversary at a graduation. Abe is good as he always loved delivering them himself. Abe gets up for a coffee refill when Chanel arrives. She wants to get to Sweet Bits to work on Andrew and Paul's wedding cake. Paulina shifts to Chanel's earlier doctor's appointment. Chanel says she is worried about that result but then fills her mother in on Johnny's possible reconciliation with his father. Paulina can't believe the latest events. Chanel says she isn't certain she can live with that particular decision. Just then, Abe returns, and Chanel exits, walking away from Sweet Bits. Paulina's speech is inspirational and weaves in the meaning of Juneteenth and the price of freedom in their new lives. Abe applauds and Paulina says it's time for them to hit the trail. DiMera Mansion – Living Room: EJ arrives to find Brady sitting there waiting to take Rachel to graduation. Further, she will be spending the night with him as Kristen is getting Mama Blake settled in Aremid. EJ feigns joy and surprise, but Brady says he knows exactly what's going on. Brady says he knows everything about the deal Kristen made with him involving Johnny and Mama Blake. EJ hopes Brady has agreed to keep quiet and he confirms, though he is still very worried about his daughter. Just then, Rachel walks in and asks if she's ready to go. She says she is but mentions she just threw up. Brady says there's a change of plans and sweeps her away to the doctor. EJ calls someone and demands to know that Mama Blake is safely in Aremid and will never set foot in Salem again. Just then, Chanel arrives ready to rip him limb from limb. She mentions his possible reconciliation with Johnny and EJ tries to shut her down. Chanel is having NONE of EJ's foolishness and says he hurt the love of her life, and no one gets away with that. When EJ asks if she is threatening him, Chanel confirms she is (Raven Bowens BROUGHT IT!). University Hospital – Lobby: Marlena thanks Sarah for her time and asks about Xander. Sarah's reaction prompts Marlena to say she's there to listen. Sarah doesn't want to bother her, but Marlena says being useful and productive is the best medicine for her. Just then, Brady walks in and Rachel runs into her grandmother's arms. Sarah takes Rachel into an exam room leaving Marlena and Brady to chat. Marlena tells him she will stay with Rachel. With that, Marlena sweeps her granddaughter away and leaves Tate and Brady to deal with the birth of his child. Salem High School: Graduation is complete, and Aaron and Holly discuss the day. Holly notes her mother and Eric sat on opposite sides of the arena. She just knows something happened between them. University Hospital – Sophia's Room: Sarah tells Sophia her blood pressure is a little up and she needs to try and relax. Sarah asks what's worrying her most. Sophia says she's concerned about labor but also about not having a family to adopt their baby. She worries when Tate sees the baby he's going to fall in love and not want to give it up. Sophia admits she has feelings for the baby and notes different moments in her pregnancy. That being said, she wants what is best for the baby and her and Tate. Sarah commends her for truly thinking through her decision and knows she will stay strong no matter what. Just then, another contraction hits. The Bistro: Abe and Paulina discuss graduation and how wonderful it was. Marlena and John's Penthouse: Marlena and Rachel are putting a puzzle together. They decide they're both a little tired and Rachel lies down and quickly falls out. University Hospital – Lobby: Tate is freaking out along with Mama Choi as Sophia wants neither of them around. Brady calms his son by checking in. Tate has whiplash by the course of today's events. Just then, Sarah and a nurse wheel out Sophia. Endings Holly tells Aaron about her mother and Eric's relationship. Aaron says folks fight and wants her to focus on her upcoming trip to Paris (I really like Louis Tomeo). With that, he escorts her out to catch up with their families. Sarah explains to everyone how Sophia thought she was in labor as it's very difficult to distinguish Braxton-Hicks from the real thing. Sophia apologizes to everyone, but Tate says all is good. Sophia thinks they should still do something to celebrate and offers to treat everyone to dinner. Brady and Tate say they have other plans, and Mama Choi thinks Sophia should get home, which leaves her less than thrilled. Brady thanks Sarah for everything she did today. He offers an ear if she ever wants to vent about Xander. Chanel walks into The Bistro and runs into her mother and Abe. They ask her to grab a seat for some family time. Chanel seems less than enthused when they all toast to the future. EJ arrives home and fields a call from Rita. He asks her to return the memory stick he gave her several weeks prior. The Second Phase of the Grand Palais's Reopening Is Complete—Here's What You Can Expect
When Chanel returned to the Grand Palais for its runway show last October, there was the collective feeling that the house had come home after four years displaced. But the re-opening of the building's soaring, glass-ceilinged nave, timed to the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, marked only the first of two major phases of the Grand Palais's monumental restoration. As of this week, the second phase is complete enough that visitors will now arrive via the main entrance on the refurbished Square Jean Perrin, where allegorical statues adorning a fountain are gleaming white. Once inside, they will behold the splendor of the building—both its original architecture and reimagined spaces—like never before. Led by Chatillon Architectes, the project is particularly remarkable for the fact that it involved no additional building. Yet there is a vast amount of new, usable space—or, at least, space that the public is able to experience for the first time. Beyond the entrance is a 3,000-square-meter area where people can wander freely (and for free)—one that has not existed since the building was divided into three sections in 1937. Here, luminous panels running the length of the ceiling create an almost futuristic feel amidst the circa-1900 riveted steel beams painted reseda green, a shade as signature to the Grand Palais as orange is to Hermès. There is a cafeteria on the mezzanine, a modular boutique, and seating staggered throughout—all of the fixtures and furniture realized by L'Atelier Senzu, known for its ecological approach to design. The main attraction, however, is a view of the nave through three floor-to-ceiling windows. It is framed by an enormous curtain of nine suspended panels in gradient green, conceived under the direction of Studio MTX (one of the 12 houses within Chanel's artisanal network, Le19M) with additional decorative elements from six other ateliers. Conveniently and cleverly, the curtain will remain closed when Chanel is preparing for its shows. The Grand Palais was onceived by a collective of architects—Henri Deglane, Louis-Albert Louvet, Albert-Félix-Théophile Thomas, and Charles Giraud—as a stage for French patrimony and culture when Paris hosted the Universal Exhibition in 1900. It also encompassed the Palais d'Antin, which later became the Palais de la découverte, a kind of science discovery museum that remained open, albeit tired, until the renovations began in 2021.
