Johnny Depp makes Hollywood comeback with first look at Marc Webb's 'Day Drinker'
Lionsgate has released the first official image from Day Drinker, a new thriller starring Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, and Madelyn Cline. The film, now in production in Spain, marks Depp's return to a leading role following years of legal disputes and limited on-screen appearances.
Directed by Marc Webb, known for 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man, the film tells the story of a private-yacht bartender, played by Cline, who encounters a mysterious passenger portrayed by Depp. The encounter spirals into a complex web involving a criminal figure played by Cruz.
Webb praised the cast and setting in a statement: 'I'm excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penélope, and this incredible cast. We're in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.'
This project marks the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, who previously worked together on Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. They are joined by Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle in supporting roles.
Day Drinker is produced by Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, best known for the John Wick franchise, along with Adam Kolbrenner and Zach Dean, who also wrote the screenplay.
The production features a high-calibre crew including director of photography Javier Aguirresarobe, production designer Jan Roelfs, and costume designer Penny Rose. The film is expected to wrap production later this year.

Juror says women on Depp-Heard trial jury doubted Amber Heard more than male jurors
A male juror from the high-profile Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard defamation trial has shared new insights into the jury's deliberations, revealing that the two female jurors were particularly skeptical of Heard's testimony. The comments come from Hollywood Vampires: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and the Celebrity Exploitation Machine, a new book by Kelly Loudenberg and Makiko Wholey published June 17. Tom Nugen, a 53-year-old retired defense contractor, stated that 'the women were tougher on Amber than the men,' describing significant inconsistencies in Heard's statements. The comments provide new perspective on the jury's mindset during the widely watched trial. Nugen recalled that the jury found 'so many holes' in Heard's account that they struggled to believe her. 'They're all actors; they can put on a different face if you pay them enough,' he said. He also admitted to enjoying Depp's courtroom demeanor, saying his testimony offered a 'breath of fresh air' during the long proceedings. Nugen said most jurors were unfamiliar with Heard before the trial. He also emphasized that the case highlighted how abuse allegations shouldn't be assumed to involve only male perpetrators. 'Not every case of abuse is from the man,' he said, adding that for ordinary men, a false accusation could be life-altering. Depp sued Heard in 2022 over a Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence. He won all three defamation claims, while Heard prevailed on one of her countersuits. She later paid Depp $1 million in a settlement. The book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into one of the most scrutinized celebrity trials, revealing how media narratives and personal bias influence the pursuit of justice.

Glenn Close and Billy Porter are the latest high-profile additions to Lionsgate's upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the studio confirmed during its CineEurope presentation. The film is slated for release on November 20, 2026. Close, an eight-time Oscar nominee, will portray Drusilla Sickle, the ruthless escort for District 12's Tributes. Porter, a three-time Tony winner, takes on the role of Magno Stift, her estranged husband and the Tributes' disillusioned designer. The two join an ensemble cast that includes Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, and Kieran Culkin. Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel, the screenplay is penned by Billy Ray. The project is produced by Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer. Jacobson praised Close's casting, calling her a 'dream Drusilla' and noting her ability to bring depth and memorability to every role. On Porter's addition, she said, 'Billy is one of those rare performers who can dazzle and devastate in equal measure,' referencing their previous collaboration on Pose. The film is set 24 years before the original Hunger Games story and centres on the reaping day of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell. The novel, released in March 2025, sold 1.5 million copies in its first week globally, including 1.2 million in the U.S. alone—outpacing previous franchise installments.
