Over 2.7million households to get free £150 cost of living cash this winter in big update

The Suna day ago

MORE than 2.7 million households are set to benefit from a £150 cost-of-living benefit this winter.
An additional 2.7 million households will now be eligible for the subsidy, which will apply to every billpayer on means-tested benefits.

It will take the total number of claimants to more than six million.
The expansion is the latest in a series of cost-of-living measures Sir Keir Starmer hopes will placate Labour rebels furious at welfare cuts.
The PM said: 'I know families are still struggling with the cost of living, and I know the fear that comes with not being able to afford your next bill.
'I have no doubt that, like rolling out free school meals, breakfast clubs and childcare support, extending this £150 energy bills support to millions more families will make a real difference.'
The new expansion to the cost-of-living measures will see 900,000 families with children and a total of 1.8 million households in fuel poverty will benefit this year.
The Government has said the expansion of the Warm Homes Discount means families will be able to plan for winter knowing they will be offered support.
The government has also frozen fuel duty and are increasing the minimum wage.
Bill payers living in England and Wales will qualify for the discount if they receive means-tested benefits.
Following Rachel Reeves' u-turn on the Winter Fuel Allowance last week everyone over the State Pension age in England and Wales with an income of, or below, £35,000 a year will benefit from a Winter Fuel Payment this year.
The move comes after the chancellors disastrous attempt to axe the universal Winter Fuel Payment in July last year just weeks after entering office.
Keir Starmer confirms huge winter fuel payment U-turn
But fears have been raised immediately by economists that taxes will have to rise to pay for the winter fuel u-turn.
The Treasury say there will be no permanent additional borrowing to pay for the move.
A total of nine million pensioners are set to benefit from the payment this year.

The Government plans to offset the expansion of the Warm Homes Discount with new efficiency savings across the energy system.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: 'Millions of families will get vital support with the cost of living this coming winter, demonstrating this government's commitment to put money in people's pockets through our Plan for Change."
Part of the Plan for Change, the government hopes the expansion of the Warm Homes Discount will help to combat the cost-of-living crisis and directly benefit working families.
The Government has estimated that 100,000 families in North East England, 280,000 in north West England and 270,000 in the West Midlands will receive the benefit for the first time.
Meanwhile 110,000 families in Wales and 240,000 in Scotland will receive it this winter for the first time.
What is the Winter Fuel Payment?
Consumer reporter Sam Walker explains all you need to know about the payment.
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free benefit designed to help cover the cost of heating through the colder months.
Most who are eligible receive the payment automatically.
Those who qualify are usually told via a letter sent in October or November each year.
If you do meet the criteria but don't automatically get the Winter Fuel Payment, you will have to apply on the government's website.
You'll qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment this winter if:
you were born on or before September 23, 1958
you lived in the UK for at least one day during the week of September 16 to 22, 2024, known as the "qualifying week"
you receive Pension Credit, Universal Credit, ESA, JSA, Income Support, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit
If you did not live in the UK during the qualifying week, you might still get the payment if both the following apply:
you live in Switzerland or a EEA country
you have a "genuine and sufficient" link with the UK social security system, such as having lived or worked in the UK and having a family in the UK
But there are exclusions - you can't get the payment if you live in Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain.
This is because the average winter temperature is higher than the warmest region of the UK.
You will also not qualify if you:
are in hospital getting free treatment for more than a year
need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave states that you can not claim public funds
were in prison for the whole "qualifying week"
lived in a care home for the whole time between 26 June to 24 September 2023, and got Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Payments are usually made between November and December, with some made up until the end of January the following year.

Labour whip resigns over proposed welfare cuts

In a letter informing the Prime Minister of her resignation, the MP for Lewisham North said she understood 'the need to address the ever-increasing welfare bill' but did not believe the proposed cuts 'should be part of the solution'. She said: 'I have wrestled with whether I should resign or remain in the Government and fight for change from within. (1/2) With a heavy heart, I have written to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as a whip. Whilst I will continue to support the government in delivering the change the country so desperately needs, I cannot vote in favour of the proposed reforms to disability benefits. — Vicky Foxcroft 💙 (@vickyfoxcroft) June 19, 2025 'Sadly it is now (sic) seems that we are not going to get the changes I desperately wanted to see. 'I therefore tender my resignation as I know I will not be able to do the job that is required of me and whip – or indeed vote – for reforms which include cuts to disabled people's finances.' Ms Foxcroft, who previously served as shadow minister for disabled people, is the first frontbencher to resign over the proposed benefit cuts, and the second to go over policy issues following Anneliese Dodds' decision to quit as development minister over cuts to the aid budget. Rebel Labour MPs welcomed her decision, with Hartlepool's Jonathan Brash saying he had the 'utmost respect' for her 'principled stand' and Crewe and Nantwich's Connor Naismith saying it 'must have been an incredibly difficult decision but she should be commended for standing by her principles'. Responding to Ms Foxcroft's resignation, a Government spokesperson said: 'This Labour Government was elected to deliver change. The broken welfare system we inherited is failing the sick and most vulnerable and holding too many young people back. It is fair and responsible to fix it. 'Our principled reforms will ensure those who can work should, that those who want to work are properly supported, and that those with most severe disabilities and health conditions are protected.' Sir Keir Starmer has faced a backlash from some Labour MPs over proposals to reform the welfare system expected to save up to £5 billion a year. Legislation introduced into Parliament on Wednesday includes a tightening of the criteria for the main disability payment in England, personal independence payment (Pip). Ministers also want to cut the sickness related element of universal credit (UC), and delay access to it, so only those aged 22 and over can claim it. The package of reforms is aimed at encouraging more people off sickness benefits and into work, but dozens of Labour rebels said last month that the proposals were 'impossible to support'. Pip is a benefit aimed at helping with extra living costs if someone has a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability and difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of their condition. The latest data, published on Tuesday, showed 3.7 million people in England and Wales claimed Pip, up from 2.05 million in 2019, with teenagers and young adults making up a growing proportion of claimants. Around 800,000 people are set to lose out on the benefit under the Government's proposals, according to an impact assessment published alongside Wednesday's legislation. The impact assessment also confirmed a previous estimate that some 250,000 more people, including 50,000 children, are likely to fall into relative poverty after housing costs in 2029/2030, although the Government repeated that this does not take into account the potentially positive impact of £1 billion annual funding by then for measures to support people into work. Changes to universal credit are expected to see an estimated 2.25 million current recipients of the health element impacted, with an average loss of £500 per year. But the Government said around 3.9 million households not on the UC health element are expected to have an average annual gain of £265 from the increase in the standard UC allowance. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall said the legislation 'marks the moment we take the road of compassion, opportunity and dignity'. But Neil Duncan-Jordan, the Labour MP for Poole and one of the backbenchers opposed to the change, said the Government was 'rushing through' the changes and urged ministers to think again.

Starmer could allow Trump use of British bases to attack Iran, says Harriet Harman

Sir Keir Starmer could end up allowing Donald Trump to use British bases to launch strikes on Iran, Harriet Harman has said. Speaking to Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Baroness Harman said this was despite the prime minister being part of a generation "shaped" by opposition to the Iraq War. Baroness Harman was solicitor general when Sir Tony Blair decided to take Britain to war in Iraq alongside the United States in 2003. She said the decisions made by Sir Tony would be "burning bright" in Sir Keir 's mind. "He's part of the political generation of the Labour Party that grew up, which was shaped by its opposition to what Tony Blair was doing in relation to Iraq," Baroness Harman said. "So it would be a massive change for him." Asked if the UK could end up giving permission for US aircraft to use British military bases on Cyprus and Diego Garcia, but not go any further than that, Baroness Harman said: "Exactly". Sky News reported on Thursday that Attorney General Richard Hermer has raised questions over whether Israel's actions in Iran are lawful, potentially limiting what support he believes the UK could offer the US. Baroness Harman said that for Sir Keir, the "rules-based international order is the most important thing". "If the attorney general says that the government can't do something because it's illegal, it can't do it. So he's in a very crucial position," she added. But Baroness Harman said it would be difficult for Sir Keir to say "thank you for the trade deal" to Mr Trump and then deny the president use of the airbases.
