Women Who Travel Podcast: Carol Moseley Braun on a Travel-Filled Political Career

You can listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify each week. Follow this link if you're listening on Apple News. Lawyer, political pioneer, and activist Carol Moseley Braun has some career stories to tell, many of which she shares in Trailblazer, her new memoir. Lale chats with Braun, who in 1992 became the first Black woman elected to the US senate, about crossing paths with Dr. Martin King, Jr., campaigning alongside the likes of Maya Angelou and Gloria Steinem, and lessons learned from the communities she served as US Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. Lale Arikoglu: Hi, there. I'm Lale Arikoglu, and on today's episode of Women Who Travel, I'm talking to a lawyer, political pioneer and activist. She's Carol Moseley Braun, who in 1992 became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. She served seven years as a Democrat representing Illinois. A lifelong traveler, she says becoming U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa in 1999 was a dream come true, and today she chairs the United States African Development Foundation. Ambassador Braun's memoir, which is in bookstores now, is called Trailblazer and dedicated to her grandmother. Her ancestors moved north in the Great Migration. They were farmers from Alabama and musicians from New Orleans, and now she's talking to me from her home in Chicago. How is Chicago because it is pouring with rain in New York? Carol Moseley Braun: Very nice. It's beautiful, and it's not raining or snowing, more the point. The weather is really quite lovely, and I live right across from a park, so I'm here in Madison Park and enjoying the birds flitting around and the beautiful greenery and the scenery is just gorgeous, and so it really is lovely being here. LA: You obviously have had an extraordinary career in politics. We will get all into this later, but you are in Chicago where you were born and raised. Talk a bit about how you were aware of segregation when you were growing up in Chicago. In your book you talk about how your mother had to endure that while giving birth to you in a Chicago hospital. CMB: Well, my first introduction to it was the fact that we lived in a, it was actually a transitional community in the sense it was going from all white to all Black. And so we were in the middle of that transition, and that on top of the fact that when I was born, the nuns at the hospital where mother was, had designated me as being white. And of course I'm obviously not white, and so I went with my birth certificate saying I was white until I was in the state legislature when I was finally able to get it changed. I tried to get it changed just going to the passport offices, and of course they looked at me like I had lost my mind and, yeah, that's part of my background too.

The 3 Sussex beaches that are among the UK's best to visit during the summer

With the hot weather arriving in force this weekend, beaches across the country will be full of Brits ready to soak up the sun. Sussex is home to a number of great beaches to visit, with some even being suggested to be among the best in the country. With a heatwave on its way to the South East this weekend, we have picked out three beaches in Sussex that are highly rated. From one with "superb views" to another great for sandcastles, these are worth visiting. In the spring, Condé Nast Traveller revealed 56 of the best beaches in the UK. Among those named on the list were three beaches in Sussex. First was Cuckmere Haven, in Seaford. Cuckmere Haven beach is part of the Seven Sisters area (Image: Tripadvisor) CNT said this beach was "one of the top picks for the best beaches near London". It described it as "one of the wildest beaches on the south coast, with superb views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs". The publisher added: "At low tide, the adventurous can explore the foreshore eastwards all the way to the Birling Gap, or head west for sea caves." This beach has a 4.7/5 rating on Tripadvisor from more than 200 reviews, with one saying: "The cliffs are blindingly white and the beach and surrounding countryside is so pretty". Also making the list was West Wittering beach. This is a hugely popular spot for locals and travellers alike, with CNT saying it "draws a crowd from all over the south coast". It added: "Low tide brings the promise of shallow lagoons to paddle in and creates a blank canvas for sand-castles. "There's a grassy patch ideal for picnics behind the beach huts that fringe the beach." West Wittering is rated 4.1/5 on Tripadvisor, but has received more than 1,400 reviews, proving its popularity. One reviewer said: "Must be one of the best beaches in the south east. Amazing large sandy beach, very dog friendly in the winter months." The final beach making the list was Seven Sisters, which is home to a number of beaches, including Cuckmere Haven, as mentioned previously. Seven Sisters is known for its tough walking routes, providing some of the best views along the coast of the famous white chalk cliffs. There is a beach in front of the cliffs to explore, which is another great option for hikers or day-trippers looking for somewhere to cool off. On Tripadvisor, there are a number of other beaches in Sussex that are also highly rated. In East Sussex, these include Camber Sands, Brighton, Bexhill, Winchelsea and Pevensey Bay. In West Sussex, some of the best beaches include Pagham, Littlehampton, Worthing and Lancing. Camber Sands is regularly recognised as one of, if not the best, beach in Sussex. It has the most reviews on Tripadvisor, with just less than 2,000, still enjoying a 4.3 rating. Lovely dunes that must be protected. Clear water is not too cold. "Plenty of activities and sports. Areas for dogs. Lovely place with both low and high tide." Another said: "It is a golden sand beach when the tide is out. Great for children to build sand castles and great for walking and, at this time of the year, letting your dog run free."

A Google Hotels Threat, JetBlue Cost Cutting and Dual-Brand Hotels

For today's episode we look at threats to Google Travel, more hotels with a dual identity, and JetBlue's money woes. Skift Daily Briefing Podcast Listen to the day's top travel stories in under four minutes every weekday. Listen to the day's top travel stories in under four minutes every weekday. Skift Travel Podcasts Good morning from Skift. It's Wednesday, June 18. Here's what you need to know about the business of travel today. Google Hotels may not be losing relevance in search results, but it's facing growing pressure from the likes of Expedia, Tripadvisor, and Trivago, writes Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Bernstein said in a research note that the Google Hotels might be bruised, citing two developments that are putting pressure on it. The European Union's Digital Markets Act forced Google Hotels to a lower position on the Google search results page, and Google's AI Overviews are slowly becoming the answer to hotel searches. Bernstein added Expedia is making improvements on price and marketing while Tripadvisor and Trivago have benefitted from the market share losses of Google Hotels. Google Hotels has an 80% market share in Europe, down 6 percentage points from last year. Listen to This Podcast Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Youtube | RSS Next, hotel designers are increasingly pairing two brands in a single building, an approach that can provide a faster route to profitability, writes Hospitality Reporter Luke Martin. Martin notes dual-brand hotels allow developers to share expensive infrastructure and reduce upfront construction costs and long-term operational overhead. In addition to cutting costs, developers say the dual-brand model broadens market reach, enabling companies to tap into multiple guest segments without building separate properties. Marriott has more than 400 co-branded properties open while Hilton has more than 125 dual-brand properties globally and 100 in development. In addition, an executive at a dual-branded Mercure and Ibis in London said having one front-desk team for two brands creates a much more seamless experience for customers. Finally, JetBlue is looking to cut costs in response to soft demand, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi. CEO Joanna Geraghty told staff in a memo seen by Skift that it was unlikely that JetBlue would break even this year, adding the airline is relying on borrowed cash to keep running. JetBlue's moves could include cutting underperforming routes and reducing off-peak flying. Maharishi adds the carrier is also reconsidering hiring plans and could combine some leadership roles. The airline industry has been grappling with declining consumer confidence, which has hit domestic travel demand particularly hard. Legacy carriers like Delta and United reported a profitable first quarter in part due to high demand for international and premium travel.
