Chipper Jones woke up from a nap to an utter meltdown by the Braves: ‘OMG'

New York Post06-06-2025

Chipper Jones couldn't believe the Braves' ugly collapse against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
With Atlanta up by six runs after seven innings over Arizona, the baseball Hall of Famer was pretty confident his former team would eek out a win and avoid a three-game sweep.
'Today is a good day…..9-3 good guys!' Jones wrote on X.
The Braves' lead looked so safe, Jones moseyed off for a midday siesta.
A couple of hours later, Jones awoke to some terrible news.
'Omg……9-3……nap…….11-10!' Jones wrote on the platform.

Despite leading 9-3 at the beginning of the eighth inning and 10-4 with one out in the ninth inning, the Braves took an 11-10 loss after a wild comeback by the Diamondbacks.
Arizona tallied five hits, including two home runs, and two walks during the seven-run rally to shock the Braves on their home field.
Entering the ninth inning, the Braves, leading 10-4, had a 99.9 percent chance of winning, per MLB.com.

Before Thursday, the Diamondbacks were 0-419 in games when they were down six or more runs after the eighth inning.
It was the first time since July 17, 1973 — when Jones, who played his entire 19-year MLB career in Atlanta, was just a 1-year-old — that the Braves blew a ninth-inning lead of six runs or more and lost.
The devastating loss adds to what has been a miserable season for the Braves.

It was Atlanta's fourth straight defeat, dropping it to 27-34 on the season.
The Braves are sitting in fourth place in the National League East with the fourth-worst record in the senior circuit after coming into the season with World Series aspirations.

Cubs trade proposal lands Zac Gallen from Diamondbacks

The post Cubs trade proposal lands Zac Gallen from Diamondbacks appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Chicago Cubs were 44-28 before Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have held a sizable lead in the National League Central division for most of the season after a hot start to the season. Advertisement With the trade deadline looming, Chicago is under pressure to make significant upgrades as they look to contend. The Arizona Diamondbacks have come up as the premier trade partner for the Cubs. The latest rumors say that they have interest in bringing in Zac Gallen to anchor their starting rotation. Arizona's trade deadline plans are still unknown, but the team has been near the bottom of the NL West for most of the season. Multiple Diamondbacks have been put into hypothetical trades, especially Josh Naylor. The front office is still deciding whether or not to move on from their expiring contracts or add pieces to try and contend. The Cubs, for one, hope they choose to focus on the future. Their starting rotation is the one real weakness on the roster. Losing Justin Steele to a season-ending injury hurts, but Shota Imanaga is close to his return from Chicago's injured list. Adding Gallen would give them another capable starter. The trade targets for the Cubs are easy to identify. However, Gallen is on an expiring deal, making his value tough to gauge. Advertisement If Chicago were to trade for the 29-year-old, he would come in as a half-season rental. However, if the Cubs go on a deep postseason run, they could sign him to a long-term contract this winter. Chicago has the expendable players to offer the Diamondbacks an attractive package, featuring two players that could help them both now and later. We came up with a hypothetical deal for both sides. Diamondbacks receive: C Miguel Amaya, 1B/OF/3B Jonathan Long Cubs receive: SP Zac Gallen Why should the Cubs make this deal? The Cubs' offense is among the best in Major League Baseball. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker give Chicago two legitimate MVP candidates. Those two, along with Seiya Suzuki, are one of the most feared string of hitters the league has to offer. Advertisement While their offense has been great, their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. Steele's injury forced Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon to step up. Imanaga's issues has robbed Chicago of one of the best pitchers in the league this season. Without him, the Cubs' ERA skyrockets. Gallen's numbers aren't attractive, but he is capable of turning things around in a big way. He won at least 12 games in each of the last three seasons, earning All-Star honors in 2023. A change of scenery could be all Gallen needs to recapture his dominant form. If a transition to Wrigley Field unlocks his potential, he gives Craig Counsell two capable pitchers he can start in Game 1 of a playoff series. At this point in the season, every move Chicago makes is made with a championship in mind. Miguel Amaya made waves when he joined the Cubs in 2023. His numbers have slowly improved in each year since, but he still sits behind Carson Kelly on Counsell's depth chart. Long, on the other hand, is still in Triple-A Iowa, batting .323 in 64 games. Advertisement Kelly is playing too well this season for Amaya to get consistent plate appearances. At this point, he and Chicago's prospects mean more to the Cubs as trade chips as contributors in the major leagues. Why should the Diamondbacks make this deal? The Diamondbacks' rotation was elite heading into the season. However, a season-ending injury for Corbin Burnes robbed Arizona of their offseason addition. The inconsistency on the mound has severely held them back all season long. Gallen's performance this season has underwhelmed. After serving as the Diamondbacks' ace over the last two seasons, the seven-year pro has an ERA of 5.19 to go with a 4-8 record before his next start on Friday. Advertisement His play this season and his expiring contract makes him an interesting player to watch over the next month. If the Cubs win big this postseason, they could convince him to stay at a number that works. However, Chicago has enough on their plate with Pete Crow-Armstrong's extension talks. Amaya probably won't start behind the plate, but he and Gabriel Moreno could split duties at catcher and DH. Long, on the other hand, could see time in the outfield in the second half of the season. The Diamondbacks made it to the World Series in 2023. This year, Arizona has struggled mightily in a much-improved division. The decision on whether or not to trade Gallen comes down to what their long-term plans are. Bringing in Amaya and Long gives them options moving forward. Gallen's contract makes him a player to watch for every contender that needs another starter this season. Sammy Sosa set for first Wrigley Field appearance in 21 years

The post Sammy Sosa set for first Wrigley Field appearance in 21 years appeared first on ClutchPoints. In December, hope sprang eternal when Sammy Sosa sought to repair his relationship with the Cubs. On Friday, hope was kept alive by news that Sosa will make his first appearance at Wrigley Field in 21 years, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Cubs are scheduled to play the Seattle Mariners at 1:20 pm CST. Advertisement The last time Sosa set foot in the friendly confines was in October 2004. That year, Sosa's tenure with the Cubs ended on a sour note when he infamously left a game early without permission. Before that, Sosa was one of the most beloved players in franchise history from 1992 to 2004. His breakout season was 1998, in which he and Mark McGwire engaged in the historic home run race. McGwire surpassed Roger Maris to become the single-season home run leader at the time with 70. Sosa finished the year with 66. Their respective feats helped revive baseball four years after the 1994 strike, which saw the cancellation of the World Series. Advertisement In the process, Sosa's good-guy demeanor endeared him to fans far beyond Chicago. The circumstances leading to the breakup between Sammy Sosa and the Cubs In the years since, Sosa was marred by allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs, which he's always denied. In 2005, he testified before a congressional hearing on steroid use in MLB alongside McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro. The allegations, combined with a deterioration in performance, put a strain on his relationship with the Cubs. At one point, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said that Sosa would not be welcomed back until he apologized for using steroids. Advertisement In 2007, Sosa ended his career with 609 HR, 2,408 hits, and a lifetime batting average of .273. His eligibility for the Hall of Fame has always been compromised due to the allegations of steroid use. Even though, Sosa himself holds out hope that he will enshrined into Cooperstown. Nevertheless, Sosa was inducted into the Cubs Hall of Fame in January. He was inducted along with former teammate Derrick Lee. Mariners trade proposal lands Josh Naylor from Diamondbacks

The post Mariners trade proposal lands Josh Naylor from Diamondbacks appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Marines are looking to make some impact moves heading into the MLB trade deadline. The Mariners sit in second place in the American League West division with a 36-35 record. Along with that, the team is just half a game out from a Wild Card spot. With now being the time for teams to start to decide whether or not to be buyers or sellers, Seattle should fall into the buyer category. Advertisement The Arizona Diamondbacks are surprisingly struggling this year. They have plenty of talent with Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, and the rest of their lineup. However, competing in the National League is proving to be very tough. Arizona has the same record as Seattle, but the Diamondbacks are 7.0 games back in the NL West, and 3.0 games back from a Wild Card Spot. The Diamondbacks have to decide if they are going to be buyers or sellers this season, and it seems likely that they will be selling off some of their players. With Corbin Burnes being out for the season, and a few key relievers in Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk being on the long-term IL, the pitching staff is weak. Arizona also has a few players in the last year of their contracts with the team. First baseman Josh Naylor is one of those guys. In fact, he has been linked to many trade rumors, including a link to Naylor and the Mariners. One thing is for certain, the Mariners could definitely use Naylor on their team this season. Mariners first baseman this season In general, the Mariners have been a poor offensive team. Cal Raleigh has been doing his best to keep the offensive moving, but the rest of the lineup has not responded. On the season, the Mariners are slashing just .242/.322/.395. It is not a terrible slash line, but it could be a lot better. Advertisement First base has been a position holding the team down. Seattle's first baseman have combined to slash .204/.262/.388 with the eighth-highest strike out rate (24.6%), and the sixth-lowest fWAR (-0.6). Going down the list of statistical categories, the Mariners' first baseman are among the worst in a lot of them, per FanGraphs. This is a position Seattle desperately needs to address sooner rather than later if they are going to remain in the hunt for the AL West, or just a Wild Card spot. Mariners trade proposal for Josh Naylor To be clear, below is just a hypothetical trade proposal. It is just what Naylor could be worth should he be traded to the Mariners. Advertisement Mariners Receive: 1B Josh Naylor Diamondbacks Receive: RHP Logan Evans (#10 Prospect), 1B Tyler Locklear (#11 prospect), and RHP Teddy McGraw (#17 prospect) Josh Naylor is in the final year of his contract, so he will hit the free agent market after this season. In his contract year, Naylor is slashing .300/.355/.471 with a 130 OPS+, nine home runs, 48 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 79 total hits in 69 games played. He is a great pure hitter, and if a team is going to land Naylor, it is going to require a big return. As for what Seattle would be giving up, it is three prospects that are MLB-ready, or close to it. Advertisement Logan Evans has already made his debut, but his eight starts in the MLB this year are not enough to take him off the top prospect list. Evans has a 3.38 ERA in 40.0 innings pitched at the big league level this season. He has not been a big strikeout pitcher, but he attacks the zone, and forces opponents to beat him with their bats. With Burnes done for the season, and the possibility of Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly being shipped off, Evans would slot into the rotation nicely at Chase Field. Tyler Locklear is another player that has made his MLB debut already. However, he was just 7-for-45 in his 16 games played in 2024. He has spent all of 2025 in Triple-A, and he is hitting the ball well. In 65 games with the Tacoma Rainiers, Locklear is slashing .282/.370/.416 with five home runs, and 37 RBI. He needs to lift the ball off the ground a little bit more, but Locklear would give the Diamondbacks a solid prospect at first base. Finally, Teddy McGraw is another pitcher for the Diamondbacks to develop. McGraw was a third round pick in 2023, and he has yet to make his debut. He is currently pitching in High-A, but a promotion could be in the works soon. He threw three hitless innings in his High-A debut, and should be ready for Double-A after a month of two. Arizona has some injuries they are dealing with on the mound, and getting McGraw would be great for the future of the pitching staff.
