Another man, William Paterson, was jailed for life for killing Gerbil in one of Glasgow's most notorious gangland assassinations. But now a cop who worked on the case claimed DNA linking him to the gun was found after he was cleared but a forensics blunder led to the gangster walking free. He claimed Monaghan's DNA being found on the handle of the gun was undermined by a lab tech's DNA being included in the sample. The ex-detective, who worked on the probe into the notorious execution, said Monaghan's DNA was on the "inner workings" of the weapon. He told The Daily Record: 'There is no escaping his DNA was on that gun. There is no escaping there was firearms discharge residue on his jacket. 'There is no escaping that a re-investigation found DNA on the inner workings of that gun. Ross Monaghan was responsible for shooting the Gerbil, along with Billy Paterson. One-hundred per cent. 'They did find extra DNA on the gun. And it was on the internal workings of the gun in a position that would have absolutely negated any casual touch of the gun.' And he claimed the force was badly let down by the forensics screw up, adding: 'That was a shocker because that was the mainstay of the evidence." An alleged hitman has appeared in court after being arrested over the double killing. Michael Riley, 44, of Liverpool's Huyton is also fighting extradition to Spain. Merseyside Police nicked Riley on June 13 after Spanish cops issued an international arrest warrant. A magistrates court deemed him a flight risk and remanded him in custody. Appearing before Westminster Magistrates Court, Riley was asked today by the court clerk if he wished to give consent to be extradited back to Spain, to which he said: 'No, I do not.' Riley's extradition hearing will be on October 9 at Westminster Magistrates court and is expected to last all day. Judge John Bristow said: 'As you know, Mr Riley, your extradition is sought by Spain, you have not consented to your extradition, so there is going to be a hearing on October 9."
