Counterfeit Gucci and Louis Vuitton: Another massive confiscation in Durban
A container possibly transporting counterfeit goods was seized by authorities in April, with the Hawks confirming suspicions last week.
Authorities have confirmed the contents of a shipping container at Durban harbour were loaded with counterfeit brands.
Port inspectors executed a search warrant at the Roseburg container depot last week, following a two-month investigation.
No arrests have been made yet, but the investigation is still ongoing.
R13 million in counterfeit goods
Police first intercepted the container in April, after which samples were taken for analysis by representatives of the brand.
The items in the container ranged from high-end clothing brands to electronics and even toothpaste, with a total value of just over R13 million.
'Brand attorneys subsequently confirmed that the inspected merchandise contained a broad array of counterfeit products bearing well-known brand names,' confirmed Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane.
The brands in the container included Adidas, Nike, Samsung, Steve Madden, Colgate, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and more.
Head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Lesetja Senona, thanked the investigators for their hard work.
'The discovery and confiscation of these counterfeit items represent a significant step forward in the fight against intellectual property infringement and the proliferation of counterfeit goods,' stated the Major General.
Unlocking economic potential
Parliament recently heard how the influx of imported counterfeit goods was placing a strain on the textile industry in South Africa.
Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams stated that limiting illicit imports was crucial in creating a market for small, legal traders in townships and rural areas.
'Working together with organisations against counterfeit goods, we will soon announce a partnership with a campaign to fight the proliferation of counterfeit goods in our country,' said Ndabeni-Abrahams.
Chairperson of the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade, Sonja Boshoff, added that not prioritising the industry was failing to transform rural areas.
'The most promising ways to achieve this are by revitalising our clothing and textile industries, which have the power to transform these communities into thriving centres of economic activity,' stated Boshoff.

Integrity testing programmes may involve an act or omission (by a person who is conducting the integrity testing) that offers a relevant member whose integrity is being tested the opportunity to engage in behaviour, whether lawful or unlawful, in contravention of the SAPS's code of conduct or contravention of any law; or constituting misconduct in terms of the disciplinary regulations. According to the regulations, integrity testing also involves testing a member for the abuse of alcohol or drugs, or using the polygraph or a similar instrument. Mchunu's amendments make provision for a report detailing the outcome of the polygraph or similar test to be submitted to the integrity section for further investigation. '(The) integrity section must, as soon as such investigation is finalised, submit the investigation report to the head of the directorate and the vetting officers for further handling,' state the amendments. Hawks members who, without good reason, fail to provide a specimen of breath as required commit misconduct, and if found guilty, may be subject to the sanction for disobeying a lawful order, command, or instruction in terms of the SAPS disciplinary regulations. Two SANDF members arrested for murder of Lieutenant Colonel
One of the SANDF members is also allegedly linked to the 2022 kidnapping of two foreign nationals from a mal in Midrand. Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members have been arrested in connection with the murder of a senior official. The pair were arrested at separate locations on Sunday night by members of the Johannesburg branch of the Hawks and assisting tactical units. Both are due in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday and are expected to face charges of murder and kidnapping. SANDF murder suspects The suspects, aged 36 and 51, are believed to be linked to the 2023 murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa. Mathipa was working for the Hawks' Crime Against the State division when he was shot while driving along the N1 near Hammanskraal on 6 August 2023. 'Following the shooting, Mathipa's vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch,' confirmed Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo. The suspects were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport and a location in Centurion on Sunday. One of the suspects is also allegedly tied to a December 2022 kidnapping incident involving two foreign national victims at a mall in Midrand. 'During the operation, police also seized a vehicle belonging to the 36-year-old suspect. It has since been impounded for further forensic investigation,' Singo added. Stabbing in Mpumalanga The arrests are the second high-profile incident involving military members this past weekend. On Saturday, two SANDF soldiers were stabbed to death by a colleague at the Macadamia military base near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga. 'The circumstances surrounding the incident remain the subject of ongoing inquiry, and further details will be communicated once officially verified,' stated SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala. 'We appeal to the public and media to allow the investigative processes to unfold without speculation and to respect the dignity and privacy of the affected families during this difficult time,' he advised. Two soldiers arrested in connection with murder of Hawks investigator
Two soldiers have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Hawks officer in 2023. Lt-Col Frans Mathipa was fatally shot while driving on the N1 by assassins who pulled up alongside him and opened fire with an assault rifle. Mathipa was attached to the Hawks' crimes against the state section within the serious organised crime investigation unit in Gauteng. The Sunday Times reported he had been investigating the abduction of alleged Isis leader Abdella Abadiga from the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg and was looking into suspicions that SA military special forces were involved. On Sunday, the Hawks said two suspects, aged 36 and 51, were arrested at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport and in Centurion, Pretoria. "During the operation, police also seized a vehicle belonging to the 36-year-old suspect. The vehicle is alleged to have been used in the kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on December 29 2022. It has impounded for further forensic investigation," said Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Christopher Singo. The suspects are due in court on Monday to face charges of murder and kidnapping.
