Patna: A ship repair centre will be established in Patna and 16 community jetties will be developed across Bihar, Union ports, shipping and waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday.
He was speaking at the first-ever workshop on national waterways held in Patna.
Sonowal said a dedicated task force would be constituted within a month to explore the potential of inland waterways in the state. "A shipbuilding centre will also be set up and water metro projects will be launched in Bihar. Kalu Ghat in Saran will be developed into a state-of-the-art waterways centre," he said.
The workshop, organised by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), was attended by representatives from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Union minister Giriraj Singh and Bihar deputy CM Samrat Choudhary were also present, along with stakeholders from the cargo and cruise industries.
Highlighting the Centre's commitment to boosting riverine transport, Sonowal said, "New projects will come up in 12 districts situated along the Ganga. A special task force will be formed to identify opportunities for inland waterways." This announcement followed a request by deputy CM Choudhary to introduce a Patna Water Metro service to promote water transport and river tourism.
"The earlier govts neglected inland water projects, but the Modi govt has accelerated their development by investing more than Rs 6,000 crore. As a result, the department has recorded a 700% progress so far. By 2029, India will become the third-largest economy in the world and Bihar will play an important role in this journey," Sonowal added.
Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said, "The connectivity and industries in districts along the Ganga will give a new dimension to employment, tourism, and trade in Bihar," he said, adding that the state govt has already allocated land for ship and cruise repair facilities.
The deputy CM also demanded the construction of a multimodal terminal in Bhagalpur. He said Bihar has also received PM Modi's support in flood control and development of irrigation facilities. He said the Nitish govt has done so much work on flood control that now there is no severe flood even if 6 lakh cusecs of water come from Nepal.
Choudhary called for speedy implementation of the intermodal terminal at Kalu Ghat (Saran), 21 community jetties and a quick pontoon opening mechanism (QPOM) at Ara. He also stressed the need for ship repair facilities in Patna under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) and National Waterway 1 (NW-1), covering the 1,620km stretch of the Ganga from Haldia to Varanasi.
He added that two Ro-Pax passenger vessels of the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation had been deployed to explore river tourism opportunities in the state.

Elon Musk's Tesla to open first showroom in India in July: Know city, EV models, price and more
The world's richest person, Elon Musk, is finally bringing Tesla to India. The electric vehicle giant is all set to open its first Tesla showroom in India this July, with Mumbai being the chosen city. After years of speculation and delays, this move marks Tesla's official entry into the Indian market, which is the third-largest car market in the world. Tesla's First Showroom in India to Open in Mumbai According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla is opening its first retail showroom in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in July. This marks a major step by Elon Musk to introduce Tesla cars in India. A second showroom is also reportedly in the pipeline for New Delhi, further strengthening the company's presence in the country. Tesla Starts Importing Model Y and Components Tesla has already begun importing the first batch of its Model Y electric SUVs along with spare parts, Supercharger units, accessories, and Tesla-branded merchandise. These items are being shipped from the United States, China, and the Netherlands, showing the brand's serious intentions to build a solid infrastructure here. The Model Y, currently the world's best-selling Tesla car, has arrived from Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai. Five rear-wheel drive units have been shipped to Mumbai, with each car valued at around Rs 27.7 lakh (approximately $31,988). Due to India's high import taxes, each car attracted over Rs 21 lakh in duties. This aligns with the country's 70% import tax on fully built electric vehicles (CBUs) priced under $40,000. Tesla Model Y India Price to Be Higher Than in the US In India, the Tesla Model Y is expected to cost over $56,000, excluding taxes and insurance. This is a lot more than its US base price of $44,990 (or $37,490 after government incentives). The steep price could be a challenge in India, where most buyers are price-conscious and value affordability over luxury. Can Tesla Succeed in India's Price-Sensitive Market? Electric vehicles (EVs) currently make up only about 5% of new passenger car sales in India. Of these, luxury cars form less than 2% of the total. This means Tesla will have to work hard to gain traction in a market where price plays a major role in buying decisions. However, despite these challenges, Elon Musk and Tesla seem confident about the Indian EV future. Earlier delays were mainly due to disagreements over high import taxes and the demand for setting up a local manufacturing plant. But now, Tesla is moving ahead with its India plans. Tesla Hiring and Expanding Infrastructure in India Tesla currently does not have an official country head after the exit of Prashanth Menon. However, the company is actively hiring for roles in retail, charging infrastructure, and public policy. It's also setting up warehousing operations in Karnataka and increasing its storage capacity near Gurugram, close to Delhi, to support its growing logistics needs. What This Means for Indian Car Buyers With Elon Musk's Tesla stepping into India, car buyers who have been waiting for high-performance electric vehicles now have a new option. The arrival of the Tesla showroom in India and the Model Y gives Indian consumers access to cutting-edge EV technology. However, unless Tesla finds a way to reduce costs—either by local production or reduced duties—it may remain a niche brand for now. Elon Musk's Tesla opening a showroom in India is a major moment for the country's electric vehicle market. Starting with Mumbai, and soon expanding to New Delhi, Tesla is making its presence felt. While the high price of a Tesla car could be a hurdle, the company's long-term success will depend on how well it adapts to Indian conditions and consumer expectations. India's gross direct tax collections rise 4.86% to ₹5.45 lakh crore in FY26 so far, net collections dip – Here's why
The gross direct tax collections in India for the financial year 2025-26 rose by 4.86 per cent to nearly ₹ 5.45 lakh crore as of June 19, from ₹ 5.19 lakh crore reported during the same period the previous year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department. There was a marginal dip of 1.39 per cent in the net tax collections, which stood at ₹ 4.59 crore, due to a 58 per cent increase in refunds issued, PTI reported. As of June 19, advance tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 were ₹ 1.56 lakh crore, a 3.87 per cent growth. The surge in advance tax collections was primarily due to a 5.86 per cent increase in corporate advance tax payments, while collections from non-corporate taxpayers decreased by 2.68 per cent. Even though corporate tax collections rose, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) experienced a decrease, and the overall growth in collections was moderated by high refund outflows. The Income Tax Department recently launched the 'e-Pay Tax' feature, which is an online portal to make payments through the net banking facility of the authorised banks. The July 2024 Budget included a proposal for an extensive evaluation of the Income Tax Act of 1961. The aim was to streamline the Act for clarity, ultimately minimising disputes and litigation. On March 25, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that the new Income Tax Bill will be discussed during the Parliament's monsoon session. The Finance Minister has previously indicated in his budget speech that under the updated tax structure, individuals with earnings up to ₹ 12 lakhs will incur no tax liability thanks to the raised rebate of ₹ 60,000. On March 18, the government urged stakeholders to provide their suggestions on the newly introduced Income Tax Bill 2025, which is currently being reviewed by the Select Committee for detailed consideration.
