Emma Raducanu snub earns brilliantly honest response from Jack Draper
The current British No.1 and world No.6 saw Emma Raducanu pick world No.2 Carlos Alcaraz to be her mixed doubles partner at a US Open event this summer - and Draper doesn't blame her one bit
Jack Draper had the perfect response to Emma Raducanu's decision to pair with Carlos Alcaraz for the mixed doubles at a US Open even this summer, insisting simply: "I don't blame her at all".
Raducanu and world No.2 Alcaraz are among 16 big-name pairs announced by Flushing Meadows organisers on Tuesday. Asked if the two current British number ones could have got together instead, Draper said: 'A wise person once told me you should find the best partner – and that's what she did. I don't blame her at all for that.
'He's obviously the best player in the world probably right now, along with (Jannik) Sinner. Great at doubles, as well. She's gone about and chose the best partner, for sure. Hopefully they do well.'
Draper, currently world No.6, has linked up with Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng of China.
'I think it's a good format for the players to get prepared for the US Open, having a shot at playing with another top player,' he added. 'Qinwen I know from the Tour. I have seen her around. Obviously a great player herself and has a really good game.
'It will be fun to get out there and play with her and see how we get on. It was me who messaged. It was nice to get that together and let's see how we get on.'
Alcaraz, who joined Draper in the second round at Queen's Club on Tuesday, said: 'She's gonna be the boss!
'I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament. I've known Emma since a really long time ago, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. We are going to enjoy it, for sure.
'I will try to bring my doubles skill. We will try to win. But obviously it's going to be really, really fun.'
It was announced earlier this year that the US Open mixed doubles event will be played over two days in the week before the main tournament. It was an attempt to attract more high-profile players, and it has certainly worked.
As well as 'AlcaRad', Sinner will play with American Emma Navarro while other pairs include women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic and fellow Serbian Olga Danilovic and off-court partners Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The event will take place on August 19 and 20, with the winners scooping a prize pot of $1million.
Not all the pairs announced on Tuesday might make the cut, with entries open until July 28. The top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking – which currently would not include Raducanu and Alcaraz – will qualify directly, with eight further teams given wildcard spots.

Sports legend is one of 12 inspirational winners at our 2025 People's Oscars The countdown to the Daily Record Pride of Scotland Awards is over - and today we reveal the unsung heroes to be honoured at tonight's red carpet spectacular. Our glittering People's Oscars will see awe-inspiring Scots recognised for their acts of courage and kindness as well as a special award for Sir Chris Hoy. The six-time Olympic gold medallist, whose courage and dignity in the face of terminal cancer have inspired the nation, will be honoured with the first ever Scotland's Champion award. The sporting hero, who was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2023 which has now spread to his bones, cannot be at tonight's ceremony but is delighted with the recognition and has dedicated his award to everyone who is battling cancer right now. Speaking from his home in Cheshire Chris, 49, said: 'Thank you so much for this beautiful trophy as it really does mean a lot to me. It's been a tough couple of years but we are getting through. 'Knowing that we have this type of support from people across Scotland really lifts us up so I would like to dedicate this award to anybody who is going through a similar challenge right now. Our Emergency Services award will go to Coastguard winch paramedic Norman Macleod, who braved storms to drop solo onto a ship where two sailors had suffered horrifying injuries. There will be Special Recognition awards for the Speirs Family, who run inspirational charity Calum's Cabin, 'Vape Crusader' Laura Young and shopkeepers Asiyah and Jawad Javed who have done so much for their local community. We will also be celebrating two King's Trust Young Achievers - Ashleigh Lancaster, 28, who started a business delivering mental health training to frontline workers and Shane Lee, 26, who has autism and has landed his dream job with M&S. There is a new category this year - the P&O Cruises Inspiration Award - which will go to the Ups and Downs Theatre group for children and young people with Down's syndrome and their siblings. Big names coming to celebrate at the show hosted by Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohl include Succession legend Brian Cox, who is getting ready to take the stage at the Dundee Rep in new play Make It Happen, and BGT legend Susan Boyle. Other stars attending include Sheli McCoy aka Sabre, Star Wars actor Denis Lawson, singers Nathan Evans, Calum Bowie and Cammy Barnes and Strictly's JJ Chalmers and Dr Punam Krishan. Love Island's Paige Turley and Saint Phnx's Stevie Jukes will be going live from the red carpet and presenter Laura Anderson will be manning the Pride of Scotland bar. First Minister John Swinney will also be there to celebrate the best of Scotland and there will be a performance from Britain's Got Talent finalist Vinnie McKee. Steven Naismith bangs drum for Shankland to Rangers move
Naismith worked with Shankland at Tynecastle and thinks he would fit seamlessly into life in Govan and could play a similar role for Russell Martin as Kris Boyd did under the great Walter Smith. "In one respect, I'm surprised [Rangers haven't made a move for Shankland]," he said. "I'm surprised because I think he's as safe a bet as you're going to get to scoring goals in Scotland. I think what goes against him is probably his mobility and people looking at him. But for me, he's a really intelligent player now. Read more: "He's a good link between midfield and attack as well as a goal scorer. The other dynamic which I think would probably come into any thought of signing him is his age. "He's somebody who's probably seen in and around his prime. I've seen it with Kris Boyd at Rangers, who was probably similar in terms of their goal return. Walter Smith never played him in Europe and never played him in Old Firms. "But Walter Smith was a manager with loads of experience and knew how to handle him. Now I'm not saying Shanks is like-for-like but those are the kind of challenges that you have to think [about]. "I know in one respect it's on a free transfer. But I'm sure Shanks will definitely have some offers because for two seasons he's been unbelievable. "He's really intelligent. Where he picks positions up, his touch. He's got a real finesse about his touch. And then he's got that calmness in the final third that makes him different. "So, I definitely think he could fit in. He fits a lot of the criteria." Shankland has scored 40 goals in his previous two seasons at Hearts. Currently out of contract, it remains to be seen where his future lies. The centre-forward is more than familiar with Rangers and having a key core of players who understand the club, its values, and the unrelenting demand for success, is crucial, according to Naismith. "If you look at the most successful Celtic and Rangers teams, they've had a core group of British players, players that have grown up with an affiliation," he added. "You cannot underestimate how valuable that is. And that's not just guys that start every week. That's guys within the squad that will do anything to be part of the squad. And they might just be coming in as squad players, but a lot of the guys grab the opportunity and take it."
